 No.4912[Last 50 Posts]

To train them is my cause.

>>4907
It encourages it, through arcane means not fully understood. Some call this pseudoscience "voodoo breeding", but you can't argue with results. Well, you can. Mostly by calling it voodoo or pseudoscience.

You wonder if Pokemon actually have a nature at birth or if that develops over time. Of course, it's the classic nature vs nurture argument.

>>4909
You quickly traverse the remainder of the terrain and make it to Amber City with no incident.

You spot a few low-hanging berries, but they're protected by a fearsome Pineco…

Amber City! My first real city I didn't grow up in! What's it like?

Pineco? That's not that fearsome! They do tend to explode though…

So how about those breeding plans?
Need to know fast. I'm feeling tired… might want to go and nap soon…

 No.4919

>>4915
It's… nothing like Phlox at all, except size maybe! While Phlox was a beautiful city, inside and out, Amber City is… not. It's a lot more spartan. There's trash on the streets. Grime. Apartments and city smog. Cars everywhere. And most of all, the buildings are… bland. They're just cement, brick, and mortar. There's no art, no color… it's all very thrown together. The other thing is the abundance of radio antennas and power lines running everywhere. It shouldn't be a surprise: the local Pokemon are Electric type, not psychic. And they prance about like they own the place. In the trees, you see families of Emolga. On a nearby power transformer, you see a few Joltik getting a buzz. Down an alley, a Voltorb rolls off to who knows where. Pidove dot the skies.

>>4916
You try to grab a Kasib Berry, but a Mankey flexes at you. Ooh, so fierce.

>>4917

You can rent a box for just 150P a day. Dittos are a little more expensive: 500P a day. You know it could take 2-3 days to get an egg. Finding your own Dittos would definitely save a lot of money in the long run.

 No.4920

>>4919
Ah, well. Let's see what race mixing does.

They're staring each other down…

>>4922
Well, there's the St. Mendel Academy for Inheritance Research – the breeding academy, and next door to it the Amber City Gym. Not far are the Breeding Suites for serious breeders and the Inheritance Research Laboratories: a man on a nearby street corner is calling out, asking for paid test subjects at the lab right now. And of course, at the latter two, there are protesters complaining about bad conditions and forced breeding using chemicals.

These 'scientists' – if you can call this science – are forcing Pokemon to breed over and over for their entire lives, often times using chemicals to force them on each other. The conditions are terrible, and a Pokemon deserves more in life than a tiny box and a gob of transformative goo, don't you agree?"

>>4928

"I disagree. The pokemon are kept humanely and happy. We would not harm them, after all, we need them. You also misunderstand the mechanisms of these chemicals: we push and encourage the inevitable, not force their hands. It simply hastens what will happen anyway, nothing we do can make a pokemon breed if it doesn't want to. And if they do want more, well, why don't you ask them themselves?"

"I haven't mentioned yet how much we have learned have been applied to improve YOUR lives. How do you think your pokemon could have had the medicine it was given while sick if not for us?"

 No.4940

>>4935
Yes

>>4933
"They're totally transparent. You can go in and rent out a box right now. They rent out dittos and sell the chemicals right there, too. They don't need to hide – they have all the power."

"That's a fallacy. Your research has nothing to do with medicine. That argument is on par with saying, 'you should be thanking us, because other protesters have demonstrated against dictators, you are today not in chains'. Your experiments are sick and twisted – Pokemon live out their entire lives in boxes because of your obsession with mass production of new Pokemon to sell to the highest bidder."

The weirdest thing to you is that nothing else seems too out of the ordinary… for a society with all these children and no adults out supervising… well, common sense tells you that something should have happened. You've had to watch little kids before, you know they get into trouble or scrape their knees or something. They definitely run around irresponsibility. Why is everything so orderly here? Those kids who ARE playing are staying out of trouble. Weird.

You head into the Pokemon Center. There's no MART in this one, and it's really ancient. There's a PC here, but it's one of those super old models. Only one light is on, which leaves the building kinda oddly dark, though there's plenty of light streaming in through the windows. There's also no attending nurse… I guess you can use this as an opportunity to try to figure out how the healing machine works.

Come to think of it, the light still is bright considering the hour. Usually in Winter, the sun has started to get quite low, but it's almost as if this glen really is perpetually in autumn.

The parents continue doing whatever they were doing, though Might have to trim down my team sooner or later. I hope someone can take care of a Grimer, at least.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with exploiting pokemon if they're treated well. Aren't we all exploiting them by catching and bringing them with us? But we mutually benefit, so no harm is done."

Next up is a dressup portion, and the trainers run to big fancy treasurechest prop boxes to start dressing up their companions. Finally, there's an appeal stage. You arrive in Covalent City. It's your first time here, and it's an interesting city. It seems… well, it's nothing like Phlox or Talentton. It seems more like Server Valley, but more commercial. You see a lot of cranes and warehouses, but it's not an industrial city: clean, wide streets and plenty of people about. Battle Tower looms above and there are pleasant-looking apartments. You note the local academy: Tianxia State Academy for Pokemon Trainers. It's the most prestigious in the region.

>>5488
He shrugs at you. "I dunno, and I don't care! But the curse is really a blessing. Nothing grows in Autumn Glen. No parents – ever!"

He preaches about the meaning of Mirrormas. Apparently it's a celebration for Mirrorists, a religious group that believes the world was created by a being that made humans in his own image, like a mirror, to rule and take care of each of the Pokemon of the world. Mirrormas is about showing the generosity of giving to mirror the generosity of the Creator. Unlike the Pokemon Pantheon, there is not a single being for each domain of Victory, Time, Space, Sea, Land, Life, Death, etc. Just one omnipotent Creator.

>>5822

There's some money, some rare candies, and a fighting headband with a white feather in the top.

>>5827
He prints out the paperwork and files it.

"There's a lot of demand out here… the cost helps us run the reserve and make sure the Pokemon have a good life. Some still buy from the breeding mills in Amber City, but this reserve is cruelty-free."

He leads you out of the fenced area deep off the path into a rockier area, near a set of caves.

"We try to create an environment where Pokemon will feel at home. That encourages more Pokemon born and makes sure they'll live happy lives – even if they aren't caught. I wish we didn't have to have a reserve, really, but what can be done for a Pokemon in such high demand? And with the rate that Tianxia's population increases, it's not a surprise. Maybe if people stop believing that everyone needs to go on a Pokemon journey it will lower demand, but I doubt that'll happen."

Deep in a cave system you see little sparks and fires all about. Fire types are lurking here. He points up ahead to an alcove full of pilfered blankets and bananas. Some Chimchar are here, dozing and playing. He points at them and gives you a nod.

>>5828
He doesn't get too deep into the theology discussion. It seems to be mostly a seasonal 'sermon', focused on the sharing and gift giving.

A dragon, huh? Well, everyone knows that you need a hero to beat a dragon!
Time to make a Togekiss, a Lucario, and a trainer. The lucario will have a headband. '1d10'

Kala flits over and strains to lift the heavy chainsaw. Ugh!

He miserably scoots it over to you.

>>6066
"Sure! Everyone can listen. Long, long ago, before anyone here lived in Autumn Glen."

"Except you, Ivan!"

"Right, right, of course. But that's not important, please don't interrupt. Anyway, it all started a long, long time ago – before any fairies even lived in Autumn Glen. The name wasn't Autumn Glen, either. It was Forest Glen!"

>>6067
You arrive in Sapshire. It's dark out, but you see many trees leaking sap, attracting Bug Pokemon to suckle on the trees.

>>6068
The dragon blasts away the trainer and the Lucario, but Togekiss cuts through the dragon with an Air Slash, and it collapses on the castle, destroying both.

Togepi gives you a long look. Then sneezes and laughs. You blink and realize you've been playing in a sandbox and none of your 'soldiers' look nearly as animated or detailed as you thought they were. Huh. The atmosphere of fairy town must be getting to you. Maybe there really is something to the claim that this place behaves totally different from the rest of Tianxia.

I'll laugh a little too.
"You got me."

"Fairies have always lived in Tianxia, and other regions, too, but they're hard to find, because while fairies are attracted to children, they cow from adults. According to town legend, there was a little boy - some say he was an orphan, or at least didn't like his parents - but he was upset that someday his fairy friend might leave as he grew up. It is said that the great caves not far from here are where this town's patron, Dialga, the Dragon of Time lives, or perhaps once lived, or perhaps will live some day. The legend states that the boy went to the Dragon and asked him to stay young for ever so that his fairy friends would never leave, and so Dialga froze growth from ever occurring in Forest Glen that September – the month that would never end. Soon kids all across Tianxia heard there was a refuge to run away to if they didn't want to live under the rule of parents and never wanted to grow up, and Autumn Glen became a place for the kids, and that attracted children. Perhaps ironically, the new fairy inhabitants caused Dialga to leave: dragons are the natural foes of fairies."

"But some people wanted to stop it!"

"That's right – city folk have always disbelieved in this kind of stuff and are always trying to come and impose the rules of their adult government. We had to make a barricade, and most people just ignore Autumn Glen outside of rumors."

"But Karl wanted to stop it!"

"Right, right, please let me finish the story! It's true: there was a kid in this city named Karl – Kara's brother, actually. They are twins and left their family together, more than two decades ago."

Kara looks a little embarrassed about this. No wonder she didn't want to tell you the specifics of the past.

"Karl believed that it wasn't enough to just stop adults from coming into Autumn Glen: the whole world should be like this. Apparently he set out on a great journey to find the legendary Wishmaker, Jirachi – with the goal of turning everyone in Tianxia to children."

Ivan sighs: "A fool's errand. And he's giving up his youth in the belief that he can just wish it back."

>>6071
Togepi gives you a curious, childlike cock of the head. That deviousness and cunning in design must have been your imagination running wild, too.

>>6072
He downs it, and you painstakingly haul it back to the place where you met that guy. There's no trace of him, or any trace of trees being downed in the first place…

This chainsaw doesn't even have any gas.

>>6073
Nobody here but us bugs, cap'n.

Well, and there's a bug-catcher on the other end of town trying to fish a caterpie down from a tree with a net.

Togepi seems a little apprehensive.

Oh yes, very small. More trees than buildings, as it were.

"Uh, you any good at climbing trees? Or maybe you have a Pokemon with Headbutt?"

"Ha, well, I'm sure everyone has their theories."

It was certainly Ivan. You wonder why he wouldn't want to mention it was him. Still… that means Ivan has been here for as long as this has been Autumn Glen. He must have been an infant when he made the wish… Only a truly irresponsible daycare keeper would let a baby crawl into a dragon's cave, you muse.

You've just met Chris, right? NSABook says he's northwest of here.

You need to go through a small cave to get onto the Fall Road.

Passing the mountain range through the small cave, you come out into the reds and oranges of the Fall Road, which seems to fit its name. It seems very much September here, and quite dark, as there are no lamps here.

You head through a short cave onto the Fall Road, which seems perpetually in a state of autumn. With little incident, you arrive in Autumn Glen at the same time as some city trainer.

>>6106
With little incident, you arrive in Autumn Glen at the same time as that weirdo on the shakes.

>>6104
You swap for Oswald. Out the window of the Pokecenter, you see two newcomer boys about your age walk into town.

>>6105
Out the daycare window you can see two new boys just walked into town.

Ivan chuckles. "I have faith that my family here in Autumn Glen will take care of me – and my Pokemon too. For all your size, you can not fly like a Fearow more than I can, and next to the size and strength of a Charizard, you might look like you belong in a crib! It's true: you could carry me around with one arm, if you wanted to, but a Machamp could do that to you. The thing you have to understand about this town is that… for us, our friendships with Pokemon, with these fairy types… it's more important to us than being tall or physically strong. I think anyone with a true friendship has that beautiful spark of childhood still within them."
