 No.7161[Last 50 Posts]

Searching far and wide.

They're out on Fall Road.

You traverse the Fall Road with no incident and arrive in Sapshire.

"It's not as though I'd refuse you if you were. It is good that you've come."

I was watching art! Does the boy from Autumn Glenn seem pleased? What about the Smeargle ?

Roll #1 10 = 10

Leo seems pretty pleased with himself.

The boy isn't too thrilled about the tagging, though.

Beldum needs to evolve first for a serious attempt at the shrine.

But I'll go visit the fairy shrine anyway.

Look kind of upset. "Is this not helping? You could speak up.."

There are no stately temples of marble columns in this small town. They must not have a shrine.

"Even if it works, that'll scare away kids. We only want to stop adults from coming in!"

That's the Bug town…
I need to check the food prices in town. Prices of Fresh water, lemonade, Poffins, that sort of thing. Alternatives to the potions I've got a very short supply of.
Rolling for luck. '1d10'

Roll #1 7 = 7

There's only one shop in town, and it sells odd and ends. No vending machines.

Considering the nautre of fairies.

Check my party. If Kala's with me, swap him our for Dovoi the cottonee. If not, then he's already with me and let him out.

No food shops, then? Or does that fall under odds and ends? I'll look around.

"Okay, then." Toward Kingsley I'll say. "Don't make it so scary! Stick with normal signs."

You head to the PC and swap your mons.

The odds 'n' ends shop has an elderly man behind the counter who seems a little crotchity. They sell sweet honey and sap here, in addition to berry juice, Pokeballs and potions.

He probably heard that. Maybe you should leave the artist to his work and check back later.

Let Dovoi out.

"Find anything particularly interesting?"

Berry juice is good. I wonder how long it keeps…
"Pardon me, sir, but can I ask how well the berry juice holds up to long travel times?"

Yea. I'll just have to do some exploring. Go to the road and look for any interesting objects near the trees. '1d10'

Roll #1 1 = 1

Since last time, that girl split. People have come and gone as you've camped on the side of the road.

Dovoi gives you a blank look before floating aimlessly about the Pokecenter.

"It's berry juice! Just keep it closed and it'll be fine."

You watch some grass grow. It wasn't very fun.

"And how much does it go for, sir?"

Still at the shrine?

"Oh, I gotcha. Sorry, I was focusing so much on Leo's technique. It is downright out of this world."

"If you have stuff ready, I can make you your signs. But what we're doing here isn't scary! It's artistic, showing the desperation of the masses and the skills of Leo. Besides, it makes it look a bit more, uninhabited, I guess. Nothing to do here but mark it up, people have no reason to venture forth. Does its job, doesn't it?"

"Um, no, we don't want to keep kids out, just adults. Pay attention!"

"And the potions are…?"

"But that's what it does. All the cool kids will come by and want to paint over here, and the adults won't want to come to such an empty place. With no adults, kids won't have to worry about getting in trouble for marking an area that's already marked up, so you can go ahead and invite your friends too."

"Just 250P."

He squints his eyes at you. "Teenagers are practically adults in my book. I don't think the fairies will like it."

"If they're here to paint, they're here to have a great time by themselves or friends. No adults, no rules, just them and a canvas."

Try to hold back the tears.

"It's so pure. Pure, un-adulterated fun. Aren't those the types of kids you want coming here."

Point at Smeargle.

"And see, it's not just us, our Pokehomies like painting too. Why don't you give your Pokes a brush and let them try."

"Could I have two potions and one berry juice, please?"
This will reduce my 1000p to zero.

"Somewhere with a strong trainer? A large concentration of fairies? "

Let's go out of the pokecenter to look

Roll #1 9 = 9

"Here ya go."

Got goods.

"Stop taking this not seriously!"

There isn't much in this city. One Pokecenter, one daycare, and four houses. It is an exceptionally small place. There's not even a shop here as far as you can tell.

Right… if I want to keep my team ahead of what the shrine challenges are, then I'll need to hit the gyms to make sure I know what I'm doing. Plus, everyone will get stronger that way.
I'll head out of the store, and pull up my map. Need to plot my next course of action.

Honestly, this is what I get for dealing with kids. But they are just kids and we've already painted most of the area.

"Alright, alright. Do you guys have the sign stuff ready? I can work on those, but I'm counting on you guys to put them where they're supposed to go. How's that?"

File: 1389926581939.png (67.31 KB, 1262x998, Map - no text.png)

Let's see… you're somewhere along the coast there…

"Only if it's good and not just more graffiti…"

Hang on a minute… the map didn't used to look like this! Tap the screen a little, squint, and wonder why there are no words.

File: 1389926759158.png (397.73 KB, 2418x998, routes.png)

"Yup, I'm gonna help you keep those pesky adults away, no worries. Closed roads, Dugtrio cave warnings, Golem avalanches, even a few construction signs. So authentic, all the adults will bail without really thinking about it. The nice Officer ladies who pass by will make sure of that too."

There we go. Wonder what that was all about…
Alright, so I think I'll head south to Fandango, then towards Mint. But first, I'll swap out Pillbug for Vivi. She'll help keep me safe on the poison road, along with Lucas and his immunity to poison thanks to his steel typing.
So! South we go.

"Alright… Stay put then."

The kid disappears over the barricade for a few minutes and returns with a few wooden signs. They're old and pillaged stuff like shop signs. Looks like they don't have anything metal here.

You put Pillbug in the box and get out Vivi. Roll to traverse.

'1d10' safe travels.

Roll #1 4 = 4

So where do all the kids sleep?

Keep looking around.

"This actually works really well. Official signs have official reasons, which might lead people to ask questions. With these, it'll look like a good samaritan did a civic duty. But that doesn't mean I won't try to make them look good."

Let's get to work on those. I only need a little to make them look decent.

"Oh, but I'm going to need you to help make them look authentic. If I make road signs, put lots of branches and stuff on the road so people don't try to clear it themselves. Make them look like they really belong."

Presumably in the four houses and the daycare. This city doesn't exactly scream high population. It's around thirty people total.

You feel quite alone in this tiny country town. It is totally alien to the cramped Amber City, which boasts a population of thousands.

They don't go so well.

You're confronted by a greathorde of Combee.

Roll for art! +2 circumstance bonus.

Roll #1 9 + 2 = 11

Oh dear. Any female ones?

"Aw yeah, I am on fire! These look better than the ones I made back in Talentton!"

Just what IS this place?

Cottonee finds nothing?

Roll #1 7 = 7

Alrighty then. Let's see…Is that shrine keeper still here?

All ten are male.

Vivi L15 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

They look pretty official. You even do some layering to make them look a little aged instead of fresh.

Well the fact that you're just yelling "Search!" at him probably isn't helping. You barely know Dovoi. He grows bored of your meaningless shouting and tends to a nearby patch of browning grass.

The lithe, tall man you met in the temple is indeed still there.

"Anything else?"

"Sooo…are you the shrine keeper?"

Follow him and look for people.

I'll head back to the Pokemon center and heal up my pokemon.
(Hi guys, long time no see.)
(I missed the Christmas thing TL. Also, do you mind posting a picture of my team? It's been a while.)

Ah. Wow. That's, uh. That's a lot of those guys.
"Vivi, Come back! Go, Cinder!"

File: 1389931364350.png (229.52 KB, 1646x1391, Teams.png)

"I watch over this temple. That title sounds a little formal. It's a full time job, though."

There are a few kids wandering about who it's not too late for. One looks like a watchkid, and there's a girl out playing in the sandbox.

You are half way between Covalent and Fogmire. Which way should you head? Roll traverse.

Roll #1 3 = 3

Onwards to Fogmire!

Roll #1 6 = 6

Hail the watchkid.

"Excuse me, you wouldn't happen to have a shrine keeper here, would you?"

"I bet. So you live in here?"

You arrive at Fogmire with no further molestation. This swampy town is populated by buildings up on stilts to keep them out of the marshy water. A network of bridges connect these platforms. The Pokecenter is one of the only buildings located on dry land. You stop in for a quick heal. Do do dododo!

Helia L21 [░░░░░░░░░░]

The swarm buzzes angrily. It seems greathordes can be dangerous even to an experienced trainer!

"Ivan makes sure all the Fairy types are taken care of. He's in charge of the Autumn Glen shrine."

"Oh? Am I really that creepy looking that I would live in a tomb?"

I shrug.
"This place sure is big enough…"

"They say in real estate, location is everything. Eh heh heh."

"Sorry, Helia…"
Eight to go… Even Lucas's type advantage with Steel won't give him too much time. Got to cut and run towards Fandango.
Call back Helia, and flee! '1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

Got away safely!

I wince.
"Okay yeah, that was a little creepy."

Scurry off to the Fandango Pokecenter, get everyone healed up.

He frowns. "Well then, if you're not here for anything, tending to the graves keeps me very busy…"

Roll to traverse.

"Right! Could you direct me there?

Ahhh '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

"Right, sorry. I did come here to challenge, but I guess I was expecting more trainers here. The last two shrines I went to had welcoming parties."

I'll head to the route to the west. And let Storm out of her Pokeball for a stretch

You arrive with no further molestation.

He points at the daycare center.

"That's where Ivan stays."

"Just me here. Unfortunately this temple is mostly forgotten. If you are sincerely here to challenge the shrine, we should go down a level to where there are no remains, out of respect for the dead."

He directs you to a door on the other side of the room which creaks open, revealing a staircase.

"Don't mind the ghosts. They love to play tricks."

With that, he heads downstairs.

For clarity, you'll be returning to the road you were just on. Is this okay?

"Daycare, huh? Thanks."
Head over there, Dovoi in tow.

Thank goodness for that. Hurry off to the Pokecenter. And since Fandango's a city, I'll have Vivi ride on my shoulders so she can get a good look around as we head there. She likes cities.

I nod and examine the remains some more, then follow him.

My sense of direction is not that good, eastward it is.

Well, maybe not for me. But I bet Solaire would love to watch some grass grow. Let him out and lets go exploring in the grass. '1d10'

Roll #1 7 = 7

File: 1389933333948.png (170.59 KB, 1270x998, Tianxia - no guide.png)

You drag a disinterested Cottonee along with you to the daycare. It looks like it's easily the most used building in the town. Lot of noise coming from within. Finger paintings posted outside. A well-used sandbox and kiddy pool outside.

You give a cursory examination to the urns but decide not to open one because that would be super weird, then head downstairs.

This room is dark, but the man makes the rounds, lighting candles, and slowly it becomes illuminated.

"Are you prepared?"

You consider swimming off into the ocean but decide against it. Southwest road it is.

The road is dark at night. Roll to traverse or search.

You search the grass and spot a wild Flabébé! She's washing off in the dew collected on a flower-petal.

She looks about carefully as you traverse the city. It's small, but it looks like it's undergoing modernization and becoming bigger.

Do do dododo

"I think so. Are you?"

I'll look around the route, see if I can find any pokemon.

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Having fun, Vivi?"
Alright, between here and mint there are probably going to be more poison types… maybe a few grass types, if I'm lucky!

"Aw, she's taking a bath.. I feel kind of bad about sneaking up on her, but you need to practice a little right? Use a mega drain." '1d10'

Roll #1 5 = 5

"How many badges do you have?"

You strain your eyes, but it's too dark to see! You should turn the flashlight on your Pokedex on.

Will you set out on that fateful journey?

Flabebe used Fairy Wind!

Flabebe L18 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]

Solaire L22 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░]

"Just two."

I think we'll walk around the city a little first. It's been a while since Vivi's had a bit of time out of her ball. Oswald can come out too. I'll carry him around while Vivi rides piggyback.
Now, let's walk around aimlessly and find interesting things to look at! '1d10'

Roll #1 10 = 10

Time to go in.

'1d10' "Whoa, you've gotten so strong Solaire! Use an acid!"

Roll #1 9 = 9

Go go flashlight! Pokemon searching time.
"Storm, can you light up your tail for more light?"

Roll #1 10 = 10

"I see. Get ready, then!"

He gestures, and a ghost Pokemon floats through a nearby wall!

SHRINE KEEPER WALTER wants to fight!

It was super effective!

Flabebe fainted!

You catch a gleam in the light and pick something up off the ground. Hm… odd. It's a gemstone of some kind.

As you stand up, you suddenly realize with the newfound light that you are surrounded by Shedinja, hanging motionless in the air. Watching you.

You push your way in through the front doors. No one is manning the front desk, but there seem to be a bunch of little kids in the daycare room.

Perhaps the largest attraction is the harbor, which has expanded considerably. It's filled with fishermen.

For a while you watch a mighty Nidoking stomp out a new plot of land where a commercial building will be placed. This place is expanding fast! It'll be a proper Ring-like city in no time.

Got it. Gooooo…Needlenose! Scald!

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Hello. Is, uh, Ivan in?"

That's not completely a good thing, though. There were a lot of homeless pokemon, like Sleepy was. In Autumn Glen, and Sapshire even, the pokemon looked happy to be living alongside people…
Well, I'll leave those worrying thoughts to adults for now. I'm on a journey, after all.
"Alright you two, we're going on to Mint Town."
And I'll leave Fandango and begin traversing the route between here and there. '1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

"Great job Solaire." Give him a gentle pet, try to observe how he feels about this '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

And this will be to travel safely. I don't want to run into another big swarm.

SHRINE KEEPER WALTER directed a Gastly into battle!

Gastly was burned!

Gastly used Sludge Bomb! A critical hit! Needlenose was poisoned! Needlenose fainted! It was a one hit wonder!

"How toxic…"

Gastly hurt by burn!

Gastly BRN [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

You cover the first part of the trail with no incident, brushing aside many shrubs and branches.

Solaire seems pleased as you run your fingers through his bristling leaves.

Solaire is evolving! Cancel?

You talk to no-one in particular. A little girl gives you a smile. "He's sleeping, I think."

Alright, now for the latter half. I'll keep an eye out for grass types as I make my way to Mint. Vivi will still be up front.

Watch in awe and excitement.

'1d10' A roll, of course, is needed.

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Yeah, well…Millie! Confusion!"

Roll #1 5 = 5

Congratulations! Your Solaire evolved into Gloom!

You arrive at Mint Town without disturbance. The road is quiet at night.

That's not in and of itself a bad thing.
I'll head to the pokecenter, heal everyone up even though they really don't need it, and then I think I'll explore the town. '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

It was super effective! Gastly fainted!

SHRINE KEEPER WALTER is about to send in Honedge. Will Jake change Pokemon?

It's so dark out you don't really see the sights. Mint Town doesn't seem to care much for electric lights. Indeed, many of the houses still use old-style paper walls. This place is truly a relic out of the past.

"Whoa! You're so much bigger now! I don't know if I can lift you anymore. Do you feel stronger?" excitedly circle around him, and don't think about where that music came from.

Yes! Go, Heinz! And use Fire Fang when you get the chance!

Roll #1 6 = 6

"Oh. Does he live here? Does he take any guests?"

Well, she's not much for a big glow, but I'm sure Cinder might enjoy the night air a little. Let her out on my shoulder, and just enjoy the night air for a while. Maybe I'll see a pokemon, like the ones who wander around Sapshire or Phlox. '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

That bulbous growth on his head looks heavy. He gives you a thick-lipped smile trying to hoist it, though.

SHRINE KEEPER WALTER gestured, and a Honedge floated through the wall!

Honedge used Shadow Claw!

Fire Fang was super effective!

Honedge L19 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Heinz L14 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]

"Yes, his room is that back room. However… He is very tired from his duties leading the town. He only sees people if it's important."

By the faint light you see the swaying of many Bellsprout of the ground.

"Where are you keeping these guys?"
One more time!

Roll #1 5 = 5

"The Pokemon of this shrine have been my only company here for a long time. I trust them implicitly."

Honedge used Shadow Claw!

Heinz fainted!

Honedge L19 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

"You look great! I bet we'll be able to tackle the next shrine for sure! ..Oh Shauna! We should hurry its already been a few days."
Go toward Sapshire. '1d10'.

Roll #1 8 = 8

You make it to Sapshire with no interruptions.

I'll let them sway about in the breeze.
Let's head out to the Old Road. Are there any trainers about at this hour? '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

Alright, next is swamp road, a little more dangerous. keep an eye out for pokemon '1d10'

Roll #1 1 = 1

"I.. have no claims to importance. I was merely hoping to see him to learn about fairy pokemon."

"Aha! So you do live in here!"
Lessee…Nightlight, go! Use…Ember!

Roll #1 10 = 10

The road is blocked by a huge swarm of Shedinja. These bugs are seriously spooky: they don't move at all, not even to breathe or flap their wings. They glide about silently across the road. There are so many of them you dare not engage and turn back to Sapshire for now.

"Perhaps I can teach you instead!"

You size up the girl. She's five years old, maybe, wearing a pink dress with frills.

"I already told you I spend all day working here. Do you know why it is so important that someone care for this place and keep it from falling into ruin?"

Shadow Claw missed!

Ember was a critical hit! It was super effective! Honedge fainted!

"Frillish… your turn."

SHRINE KEEPER WALTER is about to send in Frillish!

Hm, there is a shady character here, waiting on his lonesome on this ages-abandoned road.

He's wearing a fine coat.

Gulp. That was pretty creepy. "While I'm here I can probably get some more sap for Rena." look around for a nice sap pile '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

Shady character, huh? Obviously nothing can go wrong if I challenge this person to a battle. I might even be able to put a little jingle-jangle back into my pockets.
…I'll be leading with Vivi, though. Depending on how shady he is, I'm not sure I want to show off Lucas just yet.
"Hey there!"

A nearby tree oozes sap. It looks very nutritious for a growing bug.

"Really? Well.. how long have you stayed here? "

"I can guess a few reasons…"
Go, Dreamcast! Psybeam!

Roll #1 7 = 7

Exactly what I was looking for!
Wait.. Any bug? Maybe I should let all three bugs feast, Rena, Venom, and Blue.

"Traveling along at night down an old abandoned road, then yelling out at strangers? You're a bit of a shady character, aren't you?"

He's wearing a lapel pin… it depicts a two-headed eagle.

"I've been here in Autumn Glen studying under Master Ivan for a really long time. Almost a decade, I think."

"Go ahead, we have time."

Frillish floats in from the floor.

Dreamcast was burned by the scald!

Dreamcast hurt by burn.

Frillish L17 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Dreamcast L20 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]

There's only one 'tap' on this tree, and making new ones might hurt it. Roll to find more sapping trees.

'1d10' I can find enough sap for all three!

Roll #1 1 = 1

"…because this place needs some serious upkeep?"

Roll #1 3 = 3

"I'm shady? You're the one just standing there, in the dark. I'm being polite by saying hello."
Eagle? What sort of pokemon is that? A two-headed Braviary, maybe?

You search every single tree and find only one is sapping tonight! They must've been sucked dry recently by bugs.

Rena devours the delicious nutrients. You can tell she got stronger… It makes you wonder if there are other ways to hone your strength than fighting.

Rena reached level 25. Rena learned False Swipe. What? Rena is evolving!

"Before that. A more simple, base assumption. Why must this place exist fundamentally?"

Rolled Fire type!

Scald wasn't very effective. Dreamcast hurt by burn.

Frillish L17 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Dreamcast BRN [▓░░░░░░░░░]

Whichever you prefer to think of it as.

"I'm the Night's Watch. Keeping the road safe."

"A decade? But you look so young? Is it the fairies?"

"You too Rena?" Step back in case she gets bigger.

"Really? Well, how's the Old Road any more dangerous than any other route? Or the Estates up near Fogmire?"

I scrunch up to think.
"Because it serves as a monument to those interred here?"

"Eh? But I've seen you around here for a while. You came all this way, ignored the signs, and stayed in town this long and didn't know? No disrespect, of course. Nothing grows in Autumn Glen. Not plants, not Pokemon, not people."

It looks like she's cracking along her back! Suddenly her back breaks open. You're about to be horrified when Rena bursts free, a fully formed Ninjask!

The shell doesn't fall away, though. It slowly animates and turns brown… it's Shedinja!

Give a nickname to Shedinja?

"I wouldn't think it is particularly more dangerous. I cannot say whether or not they have a night's watch, but if they don't, maybe it is because their citizens are less involved and willing to volunteer for civic duty. Umberreach is home to more political activists than any other city in Tianxia."

"Well? Why is it important to monumentalize the dead?"

You rolled 7.

Frillish used Shadow Ball!
Dreamcast hurt by burn!

Frillish L17 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Dreamcast BRN [▓░░░░░░░░░]

"…because everyone deserves to be remembered in some way?"

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Why would political activists warrant more attention that the ghost-infested estates near Fogmire? I know somebody who almost died there."
I'll look at him quizzically.
"Are you from Mint Town?"

"W-what? I didn't believe it. I thought it was some show."

"So… All of you would have been adults already if you ventured out? I can't understand how.. "

"Well, was it worth all of the training? Test out your wings a little."
Midnight for the nickname. And check the dex for information on how to care for Shednija.

Frillish used Shadow Ball! Dreamcast fainted!

Frillish L17 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

Dreamcast BRN [░░░░░░░░░░]

"What? No, you're thinking completely backwards. Listen this time, okay? It has nothing to do with the danger of the roads and everything to do with the fact that people are willing to volunteer here. Get it? How can I make this simpler for you since yo missed it the first time? Here people volunteer for the night watch. There people don't. So we have one, and they don't. Get it? Maybe I need to draw you some graphs?"

"Yes, and only children are allowed in Autumn Glen. My brother left here a long time ago… he's probably nearly your age now."

Shed Pokemon
Type: Bug / Ghost
Shedinja's hard body doesn't move - not even a twitch. In fact, its body appears to be merely a hollow shell. It is believed that this Pokémon will steal the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back.

Shedinja is an extremely unique Pokemon. It cannot survive a single blow, but it will easily shrug off anything that it is not weak against painlessly. Shedinja should beware Flying, Rock, Ghost, Fire, and Dark types.

Rena cheerfully buzzes about. Midnight floats motionlessly. Ghosts are pretty spooky, but at least this one is a bug!

"Why do we deserve that?"

You're my last hope, Millie. Confusion!

Roll #1 4 = 4

"Well, that's not what I was asking about. I was asking why activists need watching at all. What are they doing?"

"Why, though? Why stay as you are? Does it benefit you?"

"Because…we just do! Who wouldn't want to be remembered after they were gone?"

"You're thinking totally backwards again, you're completely hopeless! The activists aren't being watched, they're doing the watching!"

"I'm sure there are exceptions. But there are also many things in this world that people want and don't get. Why give them this?"

Frillish fainted!

"You've forced out my final Pokemon. You're in charge, Spiritomb!"

"I stay here with the fairies, who are attracted by children. What do you get out of growing up? A little extra height?"

Make a mental note of those weaknesses, that will come in handy later.
"One motionless, and one can't stop moving, It must be pretty weird hanging out with your old self."

I'll put my hand against my forehead for a second.
"Alright, why are they watching?"

I grimace.
"Well, why shouldn't you?"
Double Team!

Roll #1 4 = 4

You're too distracted by these mysterious new Pokemon to glean much. Maybe after you learn more about their forms over time you'll get more out of your observations.

In the mean time, you see Rena buzz about Midnight amusedly.

"To protect travelers along the road from wild Pokemon, or to protect against the federalist government."

"Why shouldn't you? You could spend all day tending this temple if you chose."

Spiritomb seemed to congeal from nowhere! Several candles go out.

"Shadow ball."

It was super effective!

Evasiveness rose!

Millie L18 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]

"Understanding and knowledge. The more I grow, I experience and learn. With that comes power and drive. Ability to change things for the better. That was why I decided to travel Tianxia and left my home. Do you love your fairies and comfort enough to stay here?"

"But you're the one who chose to do it!"

Roll #1 1 = 1

"Okay… but wouldn't most travelers have their own pokemon for protection? And why would the government mess around out here? It's quiet and peaceful."

"Told you I would take it seriously. You can go ahead and hang these up, but remember to really sell them by putting up debris and stuff. They look authentic, but make them belong, got it?"

giggle slightly. "Hey, maybe we can go cross the swamp road now? Lets go check." '1d10' travel the swamp road safely.

"If you're making a philosophical argument, you need to show why it's imperative society does something, not just me. Shadow Ball."

Millie fainted!

She sticks out her tongue. "You act like you can't learn anything just because you don't grow up, but that's obviously wrong. I've studied here for years. You don't stop learning when you stop aging. Otherwise what would be the point of you coming to learn here? You aren't aging either."

"If you're arguing against a volunteer force that only serves to help people, you sound like a dangerous anarchist. Do you also hate the police?"

"Yeah, yeah."

He busies himself placing signs.

You head out and find the Shedinja have mostly cleared out. At one point you trip and scrape your arm on something in the mud, though, and it hurts! The scratch is in a weird, almost symbolic shape, too. You don't think much of it and hike on to Fogmire.

This town is quite swampy, and all the buildings are up on stilts and wooden platforms to keep them out of the bayou water. It is protected by patrolling Golett – a sort of haunted statue made out of swamp mud. Up in the sky, gastly and misdreavus flit about like one might expect of birds on a sunny day.

"What? No! I'm just curious."

"You can't learn without allowing yourself to change. Certainly you can learn here, but not as much had you left to see other things. Allow yourself change. So you'd rather stay here eternally?"

"Honestly, is that how adults see me?" I say to myself.

Well, my good deed is done. Time to gather my Pokes, say goodbye, and head on down towards Sapshire.

Traverse '1d10'

"Oh, well good then. Anyway you seem a little too bumbling to be a mugger. I clear you of suspicion."

"Change, change, change. That's all you Ringers ever talk about. Always wanting us to change our ways. Why are you so obsessed with trying to make us live our lives like you live yours? Let us keep our ways and you can keep yours. Sorry, it just wears on my nerves after a while. I don't come into your city and tell you how to live! In fact, if you're here to see the Shrine Keeper, you're here to learn how WE live instead, so don't insist we adopt your ways!"

You arrive at Sapshire without any conflict.

Creepy.. Well, water is still water, lets go fishing! '1d10'

Amazing! You hooked a rare Frillish!

You're in charge, Solaire!

You cover the first part of the way with no incident. Roll to traverse lower Market Road.

Woah! It's a hulking Shriftry! It bulges with power, and it's headed right for you!

Shiftry L41 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

"Nothing more? That's a total oversimplication. We have an entire way of life, and you write it off as a culture of resistance? Listen, we cared for the fairies here way before you city folk decided you wanted to annex the entire countryside."

"Hold on Pincel. Almost there!"

The Floating Pokemon
Type: Water/Ghost
Gender: Male
Status: Wild

They paralyze prey with poison, then drag them down to their lairs, five miles below the surface.

Got away safely!

The Night's Watchman takes out the Shiftry with his Pangoro.

"Gee, sure is a good thing an upstanding citizen volunteers to watch these roads. I wonder why someone would need to volunteer? I mean, surely these roads aren't any more dangerous than anywhere else in Tianxia."

Skorupi is your opponent now! He hops out into the road in front of you!

"It's the opposite, you said nothing about fairies. You can't talk about Autumn Glen and not talk about fairies."

"Okay Solaire, use a megadrain!" '1d10'

Roll #1 7 = 7

"Alright, then. What is a fairy and how do you live with them? I don't believe I've been properly introduced."

"You don't have to sound so smug about it."
I'll take a minute to catch my breath.
"Still, I haven't had this close a call since that time I ran into an Alakazam up near Phlox. Lucky for me I could talk my way out of that one."

"Fairy Pokemon are special among all Pokemon types. They don't like pollution and industralization – so they're usually scared away from adults. They like to spend time with children, and are perfectly adapted to scare away all the monsters that children fear. The dark, dragons, or fighting. This was a town for just children before the fairies came – but they were attracted to the large number of children in one place. Fairies are special for another reason, too! They're really good at comforting and having fun. Just being around a fairy can make your imagination run wild. Dark types like to play tricks, and Ghost types will try to scare you, but fairies have good intentions, always!"

"Maybe this experience will inspire you to join your own public safety committee when you grow up and protect the roads."

You were! You met a boy, and… were you talking to someone? Or… it seems like he was talking to someone and he left… You can't remember it clearly. It's almost as if the fog of Fogmire descended over your memories.

Well, you're still inside that temple with all those urns. Neither Jake nor a possible conversation partner is here.

Ah, well, that'd explain it. Welp, out comes Cinder.

A city girl seems to be speaking to the man down on this level. The man seems to have just defeated a pokemon trainer.

Green seems quite content to savor this candy. At your question, though, she indicates a big old vine slumped over a nearby bridge. You wonder what she's trying to say.

"I don't think you're going to get any closer until you figure out what's bothering your Pokemon. Fortunately for you I'm a nice girl and I know a lot about fairies! Based on the way your Pokemon is acting, I'm guessing you caught it pretty recently, and maybe it's sad because it's not free anymore. Green strings it up on some trees and fashions a swingset.

"Perhaps. But perhaps it would put your mind at ease to remember that your ancestors are watching over you, and I'm sure they're proud. At these shrines we remember the dead and ask them for good luck. There used to be many more temples for ancestor appeasement and pantheon worship, but the secular government has pushed them out."

His mood has seemed to lighten a little bit since returning to the woods, but he can't seem to find a spot he likes. Perception check.

Alright, lets get up close. We can thank him when he's done.

I'll call him Nibbles.
Then head back to Mint town and get everyone healed up.

If he's done, I'll see if I can get his attention.

He gives you a nod. "Anything that I can do."

You push Green too hard and she flies off into the swamp water with a splash!

You feel super guilty and rush over, worrying if she's okay. But then she pops out and boops you on the nose. Kawaiiii

Nah, you probably are just too old for fairies and you'll never get along with one. Surely the only way you'll ever get a fairy to love you is if you beat the secret of youth out of whoever leads this shrine.

Alright the-

Look surprised at the newcomer.

Oh. Well, nuts. Let's push on through Umberreach, then.

"I hope I didn't take too many. Are there lots of people passing by?"

Spin around on my skates.
"Sorry to interrupt. I thought you had finished."

You arrive in Umberreach. There aren't many people out at night, but it seems like a fairly pleasant town. It's more built up than Sapshire or Mint Town, and definitely moreso than Autumn Glen. Maybe even more than Fandango.

There are a LOT of houses is the first thing you notice. You also see a sort of convention hall. There is, of course, a Pokecenter here, too. There are a lot of small businesses as well…

You have a fun time taking turns on the swing. For a while the world seems to fade away and you imagine flying around like a jet with Green at your side.

Still. I'm not running away from this. I came here a pilgrim. The shrinekeeper is an option…

"Like it here, Dovoi? If you come with me, you'll see much more. It's the same reason I left my home."

Try talking with him.

You arrive at the gates and the watchman warns you: "Headed out this late? Stay safe. The trek up to Vanilla is the harshest slog in Tianxia, if you ask me. The tall, dark grass is tough to push through. Good luck…"

You begin the great and dangerous journey. The first leg is uneventful.

"My skates? They're really cool in the city, and I can go fast out here in the country side since there aren't Officers every 5 feet checking on me."

"But here, try using that key on my container here. Maybe it'll work?"

"That was a great idea Green." Smile a bit. "We should find a place to rest. Maybe get some food." '1d10' investigate Fogmire. Thou, I can't imagine anyone is still up.

You don't gather new information. Dovoi seems a little depressed.

You push through the grass for what seems like hours. You almost think you're going in circles or otherwise making no progress, but finally you push free of the grass. You… think you see Vanilla City.

It's in ruins. The gate has collapsed. The buildings look like they've been long-since abandoned. Entire walls have collapsed, and the streets are overgrown with grass and vines. The famous Vanilla City department store is only half standing. As far as the eye can see, there is no one.

Well, it is early afternoon. There's a big shop at the center of town but that's the only one you can see. There's a big stylized potion sign.

Wait, that… that can't be right! I would have had to hit Umberreach before this!
Check my map. This can't be real. It's just too impossible.

A potion shop? Neat. I haven't been to one that specialized in potions yet. Happily skip over there with Green.

You came from Umberreach, remember? That was the place with the convention center and the night's watch.

It's a bit raised up over the other buildings. Inside, there are big pots giving off different smells. An old lady is stirring a pot. "Hello, dearie."

Roll #1 7 = 7

I thought I was still in between Mint and Umberreach, though…
Assuming that I'm centered in that map, I'm somewhere in the middle of the woods, and not at the gates of Vanilla.
This is too weird.
"Lucas, come on out."
Don't feel safe by myself.

Still losing?

"Oh, just the same as usual, dearie. It's a slow day."

She sells various herbal cures and potions.

Heal Powder
Energy Powder
Energy Root
Revival Herb
Oran Berry
Berry Juice
Blue Potion

How do you even quest when you don't even read the posts?

All you've got left is Blue, who only has Fighting moves, so you surrender and receive experience levels.

Two people came downstairs mid-fight. One is the girl you met earlier.

"You tried well."

Your team (with new levels of XP)

"What does the Blue potion do?" I ask curiously.

I am not a clever person.
And my memory is bad.
Alright, so I guess I'm investigating the mysteriously destroyed Vanilla City with Lucas.

"Not well enough, apparently. Well, maybe next time. Still, I'm surprised you have so many friends down here."

Oh… he lost. Wow!

"Restores health and the PP of one move. I also have other berries depending on what I can find on the particular day. Today I have Liechi Berry, Kelpsy Berry, and Leppa Berry."

You wander the city for a time. The local gym and academy are wrecked. You don't see a light on in the city, and your footsteps seem to echo for miles in the silence.

"Different Pokemon prefer different places. I think the ghosts like the quiet."

I shrug at her and gesture at him and his Spiritomb.

"Do they? I though they liked the dark. Or the decor."

"Lucas, what do you make of it?"

"Perhaps that too."

He shrugs indifferently at you.

Dex that!

"Oh wow! Blue potion sounds really cool I want one!"
Ponder the berries for a moment. "Are those berries sweet? Most of my pokemon seem to like sweet things."

Well, looks like I won't be asking about that headband here…
Though you'd think the government, or at least the people from Umberreach, would be here helping fix stuff. I guess I'll make my way to route 10.

Forbidden Pokemon
Type: Ghost/Dark
Status: Owned
A Pokémon that was formed by 108 spirits. Some Spiritomb are up to 500 years old.Spiritomb projects its appearance out of a small rock called the Odd Keystone. The rock is trapezoidal in shape and has two small dots.

Spiritomb departs through a wall.

"Let's see… Liechi is sweet and spicy. Kelpsy is dry and sour. Leppa is just spicy."

This place is pretty overgrown. No one has been here in a while. The berry trees are being strangled by weeds, ivy, and vines.

That seems pretty scary…

That's… that's absurd. I know for a fact that these trees are supposed to be well-looked-after!
Are there any berries actually on the trees?

Roll #1 1 = 1

You spot one ripe berry, but an Ambipom swings around on a vine and snags it before disappearing back into the upper reaches.

"Okay! Liechi sounds like a good choice then. I'll take three, and three oran berries.. And how much for a blue potion as well?"

That little shit! But at least the pokemon are still managing to survive.
"Lucas, we should keep moving. This place is overgrown…"
Keep on moving towards Covalent City. That place can't be in as bad a shape as Vanilla.

"I guess…still. I never thought I'd lose down here."

"Did you want to give it a try?"

I laugh.
"No way!"

I cock my head.
"You sure? How many badges do you have?"

As you round the bend, you see that mountain appears to have formed in the middle of the road. That wasn't on the map!

"400P, so altogether that is 300P."

"Oh? Do you have experience fighting in tombs?"

"300P for the berries, for a total of 700P."

No, it sure wasn't.
I'll sit down for a minute.
"Lucas, I think I got us lost."

I laugh.
"I can safely say this is the first tomb I've ever fought in."

"Two. And a cert. But I have bad experience with fighting ghosts."

He gives another noncommittal shrug.

"Alright!" Pay her the 700P
"Hey, where is everyone around here? Its so quiet."

"Really wish I could speak Pokemon. That would make everything so much easier."
I'll open my dex, and select the phone function.
"Maybe Mom's heard some news about things."
Dial her up.

"It's around lunch time… could be they're at the coast to fish."

No cell signal.

Of course there isn't…
Sigh again, and then get back up.
"Alright, looks like we'll be backtracking."
Head back to Vanilla.

"Fishing. I see. Is there a place to get a better fishing rod or some bait nearby? "

"Well I guess this place wouldn't really help with that. So what now?"

You return to the gates of Vanilla but there's a Slaking relaxing right in the middle of the way…

"Eh, they sell better rods down in Fandango… probably in Cyan and Vanilla, too."

"I think I'll go back to the ring again, then head north."

Scan it. If it's a low enough level, I'm just going to barrel through.

"Oh? I was thinking about heading back west…"
I turn around.

"Hmm okay. What about you miss? Do you have any trouble getting enough berries?"

"Good luck then! Want to trade numbers?"

"Yeah, sure."
Register her.

"Thanks! Maybe some day, we'll battle each other."

It evolves from Vigoroth starting at level 36.
Apx Level: 40

"Oh, I can usually find enough stock. Business can be slow."

That's almost twice Lucas's level. Dang it.
So we go around. Rolling to traverse the wilderness until I get back on the road to Vanilla, at a point past the Slaking. '1d10'

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Yeah, maybe we will. Hopefully not anytime soon though!"

You head through the overgrown wilds, but you start to see really odd manmade wooden symbols nailed to trees as you hike…

Really odd? How odd? Let's take a look at them.

"Oh, because of the swamp road?"

They're shoddily crafted wheels and octagons.

"Ever since that new road was built up north of the eastern road, less folk come out this way."

Is there any writing on them?

"Why is that?"

Alright then. Wave goodbye and leave the shrine.

I'm going west! Back to the ring!

If they had writing, they would be signs, not symbols.

"It's faster to get to the coast on the freeway."

Ringward bound! Roll to traverse.

I wave goodbye to both her and the shrine keeper. Then I make tracks for the Center.

That would be true…
Scan them, see if the symbols are registered in the dex.

"Oh.. Hey, did you see a girl about my age come by here? She would have looked like [describes Shaunna]?"

Roll #1 6 = 6

Not a one. In fact, you can only seem to access the most basic information on your dex. It's like the link to the main server is offline.

For instance, normally the Dex would have been able to tell you all about a Slaking, but now it just has the local identification of species and level, no typing or description…

(Rolled 8 luck)

"I think a girl like that stopped in to buy some potions. She went toward the city."

You traverse the first leg with no incident.

Weird. Shrine keeper is already gone. He must've split while you were talking.

Do do dododo

Good! Keep moving!

Roll #1 1 = 1

Continue around the Slaking, get back on the road. I'll need to look into this once I have the chance.

Freaking ghost trainers. They give me the willies.

Anyway, let's go…south?

"Really? Thanks a lot Miss." Smile. "Oh, one last thing, do you know where the shrine is around here?"

There are a couple of trainers battling here, but the road is only four squares wide so you can't get around!

You wander back into the town through a collapsed city wall.

South it is! This road it's quite swampy on this road.

Roll to traverse.

"A shrine? You mean like a place to worship the pantheon? There's one out by the sea, on the east."

I wish I had boots.

Roll #1 9 = 9

You cover the northern half of the road with no confrontation.

"I guess I'll have to ask around there." Leave the shop and head east.

Excellent. Now for the other half.

Roll #1 3 = 3

This is getting too weird. No signal, no scan data…
Scan Lucas for a minute. See if the incomplete data is just for pokemon I don't own.
Make my way west to route 11.

Fine, just watch them battle until they're done then.

Roll #1 1 = 1

Out by the sea, you come upon a great temple.

Oh no! A beedrill winged out of the sky and attacked!

Status: Owned
Apx Level: 20

You turn around and see trainers have occupied the space behind you battling as well.

When you turn back around again to face your destination, the trainers and their Pokemon are staring at you. The others are, too.

They're slowly closing in, and they grow transparent…

THEM! though that would probably be durant

Go, Heinz! Fire Fang!

Roll #1 5 = 5

This is really weird. The data's incomplete here too… Head out onto route 11.

"Emma! Go!"

Roll #1 9 = 9

Approach the temple, is anyone around? '1d10'

There's a big decaying roadblock with a warning sign. You can only make out "Wild Pokemon" on it.

It's an old Pantheon temple. No one seems to be here, though down the coast you can see fishermen.

Beedrill used Rage!

Fire Fang was super effective!

Beedrill L21 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Heinz L16 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Can I… run? This is impossible!

Roll #1 6 = 6

Well.. Lets send out Midnight. Ghosts like this kind of place right?
"Hey there Midnight."

Of course there are wild pokemon out this way… why would they have a sign?
Let's traverse the wastes of route 11. Safely, of course. '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

Give it another go!

Roll #1 4 = 4

You ditch the pack, fleeing to the city.

Midnight hangs in the air motionlessly, but glides after you.

What a strange Pokemon!

You take no more than two steps out of the city before you get slashed up by razor leaves!

Tropius L35

Beedrill used Rage!

Fire Fang was super effective!

Beedrill L21 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]

Heinz L16 [▓░░░░░░░░░]

Wow, they weren't kidding about wild pokemon! No warning at all, and this thing is stronger than I can handle.
Let's get out of here. '1d10'

Roll #1 1 = 1

Switch out for Needlenose! Scald!

Roll #1 8 = 8

Run run run.

Roll #1 7 = 7

"You want a berry?" Offer it a Liechi berry.
"You know.. its a little tough to guess what you're thinking, but I'll figure it out don't worry!"

Tropius bashes Lucas out of the way, fainting him, and lands on top of you, roaring at you. It's pretty loud at first, but then you stop hearing it altogether. You think some ribs are broken, though.

Needlenose L20 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

You arrive at the city without further incident.

Midnight doesn't appear to eat…

It(?) doesn't react, either. It must like you enough to follow you around, though.

Well, he was a toughie. "C'mon, everyone. Let's keep going."

Well, Okay put the berry back and.. I'll figure out something it does like.
"Come on, I bet you want to see the temple." '1d10' go explore the temple.

Roll #1 8 = 8

That's… not good. Got to get Lucas and everyone else out of here.
"Cinder, I need you to hold the line until I can find a way out."
Keep trying to get out of here. '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

You have arrived at Sapshire.

Heinz reached level 17. Uproar?
Needlenose reached level 21.

This room has a plaque and several basins full of water. The room has an exit forward and to the right. Behind you is the temple entrance.

Cinder distracts Tropius with a flame, and you stagger back into the safety of the city.

Tropius tries to bash through the gate, but it's small enough to fit through the hole you skooched through. Eventually he gives up. You wonder why he doesn't just fly over… Better not test it.

Thank goodness.
… I think I need another cert. Find the gym.

Roll #1 5 = 5

Read the Plague.

Eh, sure. Replace Rollout.
What's this place like?

testing would be bad.
Call Cinder back.
"You did really good, Cinder. I'm proud of you. And I'm sorry, Lucas."
Umberreach was still in one piece when I left. Maybe I can hobble my way back there. I'm sure there's a stick or something I can lean on, right? '1d10'

Roll #1 3 = 3

You attempt to read a disease but just get a bad rash.

After that you give up on reading plagues and read the plaque instead.

Here remembered are the ignominious masses not immortalized as heroes.

In the belief that every life has had meaning.

It has a bunch of trees leaking sap. Probably because it's full of bugs drinkings from the trees. Some entire houses are covered in webs from the local Spinarak!

At the middle of town there appears to be a big apiary.

Covalent City Gym. The composition gym. Next door to the academy, it has a great marble facade.

You grab the only stick nearby and it snaps, unable to support your weight, causing you to collapse to the ground.

Still no sound. Ugh.

Creepy…Where's the Center?

This has just not been my day. At least nothing that's moved into the city decided to eat me.
Let's start slowly making my way back to Umberreach. '1d10'

Roll #1 3 = 3

Oh my…
Enter! My team is healed up right?

"Kind of creepy.."
Try the right exit. Also keep an eye on Midnight to see if its mood changes at all. '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

More like crawly! It's over there, on the west side of town. Red roof makes it easy to identify.

The entire southern gatehouse seems to have collapsed while you were gone. You can't get out this side of the city. At least it didn't collapse onto you, killing you.

It(?) floats along inscrutably. This room has a door on the left and a stairway down.

Alright, let's see what's inside of this gym then.

Thank goodness for standardized designs. Let's go inside!

When did… how?
And I'm in no condition to climb over. Is there a way around? '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

Try down stairs.

You can find no way around. Your ribs are really killing you.

This place is pretty empty right now except for the nurse on duty.

There are a bunch of trainers waiting here at the front. There's also a guy in glasses near some plaques.

This hallway is full of urns and masks… An extremely tall man is at the end of the hallway. He's wearing a black robe, and he is lithe.

Oh, that guy? Approach the one with the glasses.

Probably almost literally.
And there's that mountain out on route 10 that wasn't there before, plus all sorts of nasty things on 11.
Vanilla probably had a hospital for people. Maybe I can wander there and see if it's still in decent enough shape to use. '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

Get healed up.
"You don't normally see the Center this empty. Something happening today?"

Wince and take a step back.

Slowly walk up to the tall man. "Hello? I was just showing my friend Midnight around. I didn't know anyone was here.. do you work here?"

The Vanilla City hospital is actually where the Pokemon Center is. The center is built into the side of it. These once-sterile halls likely harbored hundreds of busy doctors some time ago, but now the building has been overtaken by weeds. The building has partially toppled: the entire third and higher floors have slid off the supports and crashed into the ground, blocking the road behind the building. The first couple of floors seem accessible, including the Pokemon center.

The lights are out here. You thought hospitals were supposed to have emergency generators. The only place light is coming from is the Pokemon Center, but at least your Dex's light is working.

"I bet you're here to take on Norrin, the Covalent City Gym Leader. Norrin's a specialist in team composition: you better bring your A-game if you want to beat him. He has all the typings figured out, offensively AND defensively."

He looks up from the basin, where he appears to be using a pestle to crush some kind of herb.

"You could say that. I watch over the Temple of Regia, or the Shrine of the Pantheon, if you prefer."

"Today there's a bug catching contest in the Pacific Woods. All of the local bug trainers have gone to give it their all!"

Nod slowly.
"Do you get many visitors?"

"Wow… that sounds like a tough fight! I already have a cert, but it took me two tries… What kind of level of team does he have for a trainer like me?"

"If you have one cert, he'll use three Pokemon from levels 17 to 20."

"Not as such anymore. The odd pilgrim, but Pantheonism is losing its vigor to state secularism and encroaching Mirrorism. This may be the last temple which honors the Pantheon."

"I think I have a chance then… Thank you, sir!"

"Really? What will happen to the temple if everyone stops coming?"

"I wasn't really counting the folk who come here only to drop off an urn and depart as 'visitors', so I suppose they would still get use out of the temple. I think it would be quite sad if people stopped interring the dead, though."

"Good luck, champ in the making!"

look confused.

Right, let's start making our way through this gym!

Roll #1 10 = 10

"To inter is to place a corpse within a tomb."

Fortunately there isn't a line to challenge the support staff. You approach a gym worker.

"Ready to fight? Let's go!"

GYM STAFFER DAMIEN wants to fight!

"You bet!"
Send out Miles first.
"Sludge Bomb!"

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Oh, I see." Look at the herbs he is stirring, do I recognize them. '1d10'
"Are you sick?"

Roll #1 4 = 4

You recognize a sweet smelling flower but you don't know the rest.

"No, these herbs are preservatives that slow the decay of corpses and dull the odor of the rot. Not all of those stored here are cremated: some are full bodies, which must be cared for differently. Sometimes, when a person is lost entirely, at sea for example, a mask is made for them instead."

Are you sure you want to use that move? You can choose something else or switch.

"You're in charge, Honedge!"

Use Dig instead then.

"Oh, I see." look a little uncomfortable and glance at the door..
"I didn't mean to trouble you at work."

Dug down below!

"Flash cannon!"

It missed!

"It's alright. Were you looking for the worship chambers? They're upstairs."

Now to hit him!
And once he does, we'll go for another Dig!

Roll #1 9 = 9

"Thanks." Go upstairs, no actually just leave and go further toward the shore.

It was super effective!

"Flash cannon! Now!"

Honedge L20 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]

Miles L20 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

To the shore it is. You arrive at the coastline. You can see water types in the water.

Can I see anyone fishing? explore the shoreline. '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Good job Miles, Keep digging!"

Roll #1 1 = 1

As mentioned before, there are some fishermen up along the coast. You walk by their setup and note they have a big bucket of Qwilfish.

You wander down along the coast further, Midnight gliding along behind you. Not too far from here you see a shipwreck that looks abandoned. Far away on the horizon you see a oil platform.

"Take this!"

DAMIEN used Max Potion!

Dig failed.

Honedge L20 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Miles L20 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Oh bother.
"Don't worry, just go for another dig!"

Roll #1 7 = 7

An abandoned ship wreck? That looks like a great place to explore. '1d10'
"Come on Midnight, we'll have some fun yet."

Roll #1 7 = 7

"Flash cannon!"

It missed!

It's a personal yacht that ran aground. There's some rigging with which you can pull yourself up on deck. Based on the position, some of the lower floors are probably flooded.

"Hit and dig!"

Roll #1 1 = 1

The attack missed!

"Flash cannon!"

Miles fainted!

Use next Pokemon?

Lets go in and look at the first couple floors then. '1d10' looking for anything interesting, maybe an item.

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Emma, I need your assistance here! Confuse Ray on the double!"

Roll #1 3 = 3

You do find something ball shaped. It's Gastly!

Super effective! Emma fainted!

Use next Pokemon?

"Wilbur, come out and play! Use Twister!"

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Okay, lets use Mega Drain!" '1d10'

Roll #1 3 = 3

It wasn't very effective…

Honedge L20 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░]

It wasn't very effective…

Gastly used Lick! Solaire was paralyzed!

A critical hit! Wilbur fainted!

I've got to try and win…

The Pokecenter works? Great. At least I can heal everyone up. Let's head there.

"Bug catching? How does that work?"

"Trainers use special Pokeballs and only one of their Pokemon. There are also time constraints, and you're only allowed to keep one catch. Then you get judged based on the size, level, and rarity of your Pokemon."

You approach. There are voices inside. You can't make out what they're saying from this far.

"That sounds promising! Where do I sign up?"

"There's a road out the north of town. Don't confuse it with the swamp road to Fogmire, it's to the left of that one."

"Gotcha. Thanks."
Make tracks for that road.

Oh, there it is. You're surprised you didn't notice it before, but you suppose there's a bit denser foliage here. The canopy is actually quite thick in this area, and only a few beams of light stream through the leaf coverage.

Listen at the door. Try not to make too much noise as I move through the rubble. '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

"Can you get it working?"

"Eh, hard to say, boss. It's all rusted out… probably hasn't worked in a long time. We're lucky I jimmied the lights. I can take a look, but I'm not a miracle worker. You got my tools?"

"Balmond has them. Balmond?"

"Yes, boss."

"Good. Get to work – and don't screw it up!"

BDN: You don't gather any new information.

Well I've never been in a forest before. That might not help either.
Let's go go down it and see if we can find this bug catching peoples.

I'll knock, and grip Helia's pokeball in my other hand.

Maybe I'll have to give it a bit more time, I'm not leaving this town yet anyway.

Wonder if Trish can communicate with him. Put her out and see what happens

Two heavily cloaked figures wearing gas masks turn around and look at you surprised.

"Must be one of the locals."

"Uuuh…He don't look like a Cultist."

"Doesn't matter. Balmond, keep him busy while I get this thing working. Boss won't like any more delays."

The one who must be Balmond – a stocky, imposing figure, hulks his way over.

"Sorry fella. I'm gonna have to ask you to leave."

He produces a Pokeball from his belt.

Trish is very attached to you. Literally. She sits on your shoulder.

You hike down the dark road. Roll for traverse.

"Can't I at least use the Pokecenter? My pokemon got messed up by some stupid banana-chinned pokemon outside of town, I don't know how Vanilla City got like this, I think my ribs are broken, and there's a mountain on route 10 that wasn't there yesterday."
I'll grip my pokeball a little harder.

"Don't care. Don't care. Don't care. Boss is sick of waiting, and I'm not going to be the one to tell him that we were delayed because some lunatic wants to fry himself. I don't know if I can even get the console working."

"Sorry fella."

Oh no! A horde of Kakuna! You have time to pick out a Pokemon though.

Trish twitches her mandibles at you in what you can only interpret as how do you expect me to do that?

A horde of Kakuna? Aren't they…immobile?
Well, I send out Heinz. Fire Fang!

I'll shake my head, and slowly put my pokeball away.
"I just don't know what's going on."

I'll cringe slightly, as my ribs remind me of their condition.
"I… I think I need to sit down for a bit. Did you know if any medical supplies are left in the hospital? I kinda wasn't kidding about the broken ribs, and I don't think potions work on people."

The daycare is as busy as ever with kids of various ages moving about their daily routines, either playing or reading, mostly. A few training with Pokemon, even.

The one known as Amir gives you what you THINK is a cross look, but you're not sure behind that gas mask.

"I think Amir wants you to let him work in quiet. But uh… maybe some of the other rooms have painkillers."

I'll nod.
"Lead the way. This is my first time in Vanilla city, so I'm going to trust you not to lead me into bad places."

"Um, duh, this is obviously a trick to lure you away. Go look on your own, 'Umberreacher'."

I'm in no condition to trick anybody. You're about as friendly as those weirdo kids from Autumn Glen…"

"Excuse me but is Ivan in now?"

Time to try again

"Ivan's always in! It's so rare he leaves."

"I don't even know what Autumn Glen is. Listen, Balmond, it'll make things go a lot easier if I just shoot him."

"I don't think you should shoot a kid."

"Well somebody has to do something because our so-called enforcer is having an attack of conscience."

Right, let's… dig through some cabinets. If I'm really lucky, I'll find a Revive for Lucas. Not that they keep those things just lying around…
'1d10' to search for painkillers.
"So, assuming I know absolutely nothing of what's happened, what happened? What did that guy mean by Umberreach being radioactive?"

Roll #1 5 = 5

Nod a bit. "Alright, back to treasure hunting!" '1d10' look around this room for anything interesting.

Roll #1 1 = 1

Give it another shot!

Roll #1 8 = 8

A glint of light catches your eye from down the corridor… something golden seems to lay on the ground on the other side of this room…

Heinz reached level 17 Uproar?
Nightlight reached level 17

The obvious places like cabinets look pretty thoroughly looted already.

"Got blown up by something. It's a desert crater."

"Something? That's helpful. What about that mountain on route 10?"
Well, what about drawers, or maybe loose paneling? '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

"What about it?"

Drawers have been emptied out too. You jerk one out, though, and you think you see a bottle that has fallen down through the paneling under the drawers inside the wall.

"Oh, I knew there was treasure."
"But just to be sure." Let Venom take the lead.
"What do you make of that mask V?" point her in the right direction '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

Awesome. Let's reach in there and grab it. Give it a little shake to check if there's anything inside.

Replace Rage. Now, where are we?

"That mountain wasn't there last time I checked. When did it pop up?"

She trots over and gingerly prods it with a stubbly little hand and shrugs.

Lucky 7777, I won't make you roll.

It's full.

On the path to the bug catching contest.

"Iunno. Figured it was always there."

Oh, right. Keep going!

Actually, wait. Can I backtrack and get some healing first?

Hot diggity. Check the prescribed dosage.
"Well, it wasn't. What about Server Valley?"

"Well, that means it wasn't a ghost playing a trick!"
'1d10' try to pick up the mask, what does it look like?

Roll #1 3 = 3

Sure. You head back into Sapshire.

The label has gone white from age.

"What about it?"

It isn't a mask. It's some sort of Pokeball.

You're about to examine it more closely when the boards under you give way with a crackle and you fall through into the flooded floor below you with a splash!

To the center real quick! I can't go bug catching with poisoned friends.

Flooded, at least I can swim, tread water for a moment.
"Oh no! Uh.. come back V, Green, I need your help."
switch out Venom for Green.

Well, it's usually two pills, so I'll pop in two of them, and down them with a sip of berry juice.
"Well, what happened to it? That guy out there said Phlox academy is gone, and Vanilla's a ruin, so I kinda want to know what happened to the other inner ring cities."

You toss the ball up and there's a flash before Green is looking down at you from the floor above.

Maybe it's too soon to tell, but you're not feeling much better.

Do do dododo

Quick! Back to the contest!

Roll to traverse the road.

Well, they never work immediately anyway…
I'll gingerly set myself down and lean against the cabinets.

"Oh, now you're up there.. Can you find a way down here Green?"
'1d10' get to a dry part of the floor.

Roll #1 1 = 1

All I need is another hoard of pupae.

Roll #1 7 = 7

Green does a cannonball, splashing you.

You make it down the road with no further excitement.

Up ahead there's a building where people are gathered.

The cabinets are kinda creaky. Honestly you don't trust any part of this old building.

"Good to hear. Might I see him, please?"

Don't have much choice. Take out my dex, and check my party status. I know Lucas is KO'd, but what about everyone else?
"So, mister… Balmond, right? What happened to the League champion, and the Pokemon shrines, and all that? Heck, what happened to all the people?"

Laugh and splash her back "Hey, help me find a way out of this water okay?" '1d10' swim assisted by Green

Roll #1 1 = 1

I approach the building. What kind of other people are gathering here?

"Only trainers who have befriended a Fairy Type are allowed to see Ivan. Have you?"

You watch Green swim ahead, when something suddenly grabs you from behind, covering your mouth and dragging you underwater!

They come in all shapes and sizes, but they're universally bug catchers.

Just him.

"The war, of course."

"Well, I have one as a follower, but I wanted his advice on bonding with him closer."

"What war?"

'1d10' kick it away and break free.
Green, please come back..

Roll #1 1 = 1

Hm. Little out of my element then. Let's go inside.

"Hm… okay. I'll take you to him."

The little girl leads you through the daycare's main hall to the back room. She quietly opens the door and points to the crib at the end.

There's a baby boy reclining, reading a book.

"THE War. The Great War. The war to end all wars."

More tentacles surround you and drag you down into the deeps. Darkness surrounds you and you pass out.

When you come to, you violently hack and cough, excising the water from your lungs. It's freezing cold, wherever you are… and you don't see your bag or Green anywhere.

Hey – one of your Pokeballs is touching your face! Roll for luck.

It's awfully dark wherever you are. You can't see a thing.

This place is packed, but there's a speaker announcing stuff.

"Welcome bug catchers to yet another Bug Catching Competition! For those of you not familiar with the rules, there are informational tables. For the rest of you – good luck, get out there and catch a rare Pokemon!"

'1d10' lucky

Roll #1 3 = 3

I'll give him a blank look.
"But there hasn't been any wars since… since that whole thing in Johto. I think. History wasn't exactly my best subject…"

I'll go look at the nearest information table first.

You gingerly feel over the Pokeball with your hand. You know the feel of each ball enough to know this is Venom's.

"What do you think wrecked Vanilla City? This isn't the aftermath of a parade. Look, you got your painkillers, you oughta scram. Boss won't be as friendly as us."

There's a pretty young thing at the table. Her bug catching outfit is pretty revealing, but then you consider that you don't know anything about her character, so if you commented on it now you might end up ashamed of your words and deeds.

"Heya! You look new. How can I help?"

Oh, right.

"Excuse me, are you Ivan? I think I heard you're the shrine keeper."

He straightens himself and nods. "Ah, a visitor. Anya, if you please?"

"Of course, master."

She approaches and lowers the bars on the crib, then holds him up at eye level with you.

"So you've come to learn more about fairy-types?"

That's good.
but its so dark.. feel around for the wall or something '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

I'll shake my head.
"If you guys get the heal table thingie working again, and it still works after you've got your pokemon checked out, I wanted to run mine through. I'm going to need my team in better shape than me if I want to be able to get out of here in… well, intact as possible."
I'll fiddle with my pokedex for a minute.
"When was the war? Who fought it? Just… what happened in the time it took me to go from Umberreach, which was still standing when I left it, to… this?"

Ew. It's all wet! All the air in this room smells like fish, too.

You hear a beating coming from a nearby room, but the lack of any light makes it hard to judge where that is.

The floor seems to shift under you and there's a groan. Wherever you are, it's unstable.

"Look I'm not a history buff. I don't know and I don't care. All I know now is that you're either with Team Remnant or the Dragon Cult. Maybe the boss would let you in if you're not too weird around him."

"What if I'm not with either? I mean, I really just want to figure out where, and when I am, and how to get back."

Let out Dovoi.

"They're a type I don't really understand. Their powers are mysterious and seem to be another kind that plays on the mind, but I can't understand how and why they…. are. And unless I do, I don't think I can ever understand Dovoi here."

'1d10' try walking a hand along the uh.. wall.
"hello? Is someone in here?"

Roll #1 1 = 1

"You're in Vanilla City, or what's left of it."

"Could be that it's too late for you. Fairies bond best with young minds. Those creative thinkers that are still filled with imagination. They don't do well around structural thinkers and those that see imagination and think, 'impossible'.

But don't let that get your hopes down. Fairies have different personalities, and each one is different."

The ground suddenly shifts into a steep incline and you fall, rolling backwards. Reflex save.

Roll #1 6 = 6

No risk no reward.
"You could tell, huh? Yeah, I'm just looking to get the skinny on this whole thing. I go out with one partner and try to catch the best bug I can?"

"Well, I figured that. But that doesn't answer the 'when.' I mean, to me, Vanilla City, Umberreach, Mint Town, all the ring cities… Everything was fine. I mean, sure the townies didn't much like the Ringers, but I don't know how things can change like this in the span of a day!"

"Imagination doesn't have to die with age! I'm sure…"

"Could I make a request, then? Please allow me to challenge you. I want to see how a fairy lives and fights, and how you do it."

As you roll back, something big brushes your fingers and you grab it with all your might!

Suddenly you're overcome by a noxious wave of fluid as you're spewed out into the ocean. Something huge takes off as you're blinded by the fishy stuff expelled with you.

Hey – your bag! It's sinking! You CAN'T miss it!

But the surface of the ocean is so far away…

"Basically! There are some special contest balls you have to use, though: you only get ten!"

You feel very exhausted. You are in dire need of sleep.

"I don't know what you're talking about. You must've been living under a rock."

"Hm. I'm not sure you're ready. I run one of the most difficult shrines in Tianxia."

'1d10' go for the bag, Maybe I can call Green out.. if she's in there.

Roll #1 7 = 7

"Ten balls? Then how can I catch only one 'mon?"

"I guess so."
my eyelids will start to droop.
"Hey, if I stay in here, do you think I can sleep? I'm… really tired…"

"I.. I can…"

Turn about and consult with team.

"I'll let you guys decide. We might lose badly, probably will. Want to give it a shot? "

What luck! She was inside! She takes off, paddling with her mousy little legs. She may be Green, but she's still a Water-type. Bag and trainer in tow, she jets you toward the surface. Roll Constitution.

"If you catch a second Pokemon, you have to let one of the two go."

"Whatever you wanna do."

He returns to the other room.

Julia looks nervous.
Mismar Phil and Dovoi appear indifferent.
Trish nibbles on your ear.
Haman flexes.

'1d10' just hold on.

Roll #1 8 = 8

I'll nod slightly, then pick out Cinder's Pokeball and let her out. After that, I'll pick her up and hold onto her.
"I'm going to sleep for a little bit. I need you to keep an eye out and wake me up if there's trouble, okay?"

"Two willing, 3 neutral. You don't have to fight then, Julia."

Turn back to Ivan.

"Alright. We can risk a loss. We'll gain from it in the long run."

"So can I reuse the ball then?"

You keep your grip the whole way! With a gasp of breath, you break the surface!

Ew. You still have some ambergris on you.

Cinder gives you a wary nod.

"Alright. Let's begin."

SHRINE KEEPER IVAN wants to fight!

"A lot of these balls are really old, so some of them will break after you throw them. Sorry! But yeah, reuse any that you can, and turn in extras to get reused next time!"

"Good girl. Knew I could count on you."
And then I'll pass out.

"Huh. I guess that sounds pretty straightfoward. And we're all judged in the end?"

You wake up with your head pounding. You rub it, and feel a huge sore on your head. Ugh!

You're laying in the middle of a patch of tall grass.

"Right. Weight and rarity are the most important."

"Philmarillon! Ready yourself!"

Let's see what he brings out.

Look around.
Is Cinder still out? Where am I?

"Rarity I get, but weight? Interesting criteria."

No, all your Pokemon are in Pokeballs. You're not sure where you are from your current vantage laying in the middle of a patch of tall grass. It's very tall and dark, though.

"Well you have to have a tie-breaker, and level isn't fair!"

Pokedex. Take out my pokedex. Where am I? Fire up the map. Map works, right? Please let it work.

You're on the South Road, about halfway between Umberreach and Vanilla City.

What did I run into…? Check my team. Is Lucas KO'd? My ribs! What about my ribs?

Your head is sore, not your ribs. What're you on about?

Lucas is fine.

This is so weird. Was it just a dream, then? Some kind of nightmare?
Get to my feet, and look around with the flashlight. Maybe I can see what I ran into. '1d10'

You're in charge, Philmarillon!

"Handle it, Azurill!"

Azurill L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Philmarillon L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Whatever it was, it's gone now. The only proof that it was ever here are the engorged sores all over your scalp.

"Good enough for me. Where's the starting gate?"

…That's going to need to be looked at. Might as well take a picture, for science…
And then back on the road to Vanilla city. Rolling to traverse safely. '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Oh, there's no gate. It's all natural. The whole woods are game. If you head too far east you'll run into the briar thicket and if you head too far west you'll reach The Spine – the mountain range that cuts us off from the west. It is possible to wander all the way north up onto the East Road, though, so definitely don't go too far that way! You'll know if you went to the limits of the south, though – you'll be back in Sapshire. Everything in the middle of all that is fair game. You have a timelimit of 2 hours."

You traverse some more dark, tall grass. You stand before more dark, tall grass.

"Cool. Do I have to register or anything?"

Well, it had better be the dark, tall grass next to the gate of Vanilla. Keep going. '1d10'

Roll #1 7 = 7

"Just pick up your Contest Balls at our PokeMart® Live Alive™ table by the door and record your name. Don't forget to turn in any spares when you finish."

It is, in fact. You push through more tall, dark grass until you get to the gates of Vanilla City.

Great! Into the gate we go, and let's hunt down that pokecenter.

"Great. Thanks!"
Let's go do that!

You stop by the PokeMart® Live Alive™ table, where there are several prominent signs indicating a PokeMart sponsorship. An enthusiastic blonde at the table gives you a friendly wave.

"Are you here to unlock your real potential as a trainer by participating in the PokeMart® Live Alive™ Bug Catching Challenge? We'll you'll need some PokeMart® Contest Balls™. Don't forget to like us on FaceSpace and follow us on Chattoter. Be sure to Chat about your favorite moments of the competition with hashtag #PokeMartLiveAliveBugContestChallenge."

You head through the industrial boulevards of Vanilla City. Smells like progress with all these item research firms about. The telltale red roof lay before you.

…is it attached to a hospital? Because that would be kinda spooky if it were.

Sure is! The city looks much like you saw it in your dreamlike state.

Well, except not in ruins.
Still, that's kinda weird, since I've never been here before. Anyway, into the center.

This place is a little crowded, but you guess that makes sense: it is a city. There's a line for service.

I'll wait, then. Try not to scratch my head.

I should excuse myself from whoever I'm with, and check the Pokedex for the nearest Amateur Coordinator competition and directions towards it.

I only recognized about half of that, so I'll just take my balls and be on my way.

A few more people filter through as they get their Pokemon healed. You're fifth in line.

The nearest Amateur contest is in Sapshire. The only contest here is the Master Cute competition.

Onwards into the wilds! Where to?

Let's goooooooo….west! Look for dem bugs.

Roll #1 10 = 10

Well, I'm in no real hurry. It's not like the gym, or the hospital, is going anywhere. Hopefully. Still kinda weirded out by that dream.

Let's check if there's any here in Fogmire after dealing with the HM business.

"Hmm? What am I seeing?. Take down!"

Roll #1 2 = 2

Before you get started, deposit all but one of your Pokemon.

I'll save your roll.

Eventually you get up to the front of the line.

"Ew. Er- are you alright?"

Oh, right, I forgot you went there.

You see some fliers for an amateur Smart competition around here.

"This shrine has a curious youthening effect on Pokemon. Now, Azurill, open with a Hydro Pump!"

Beldum took damage from Recoil!

Azurill L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Philmarillon L5 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]

Let's make a note of their directions and head over there.

You wander over to one of the houses on stilts indicated by the flyer. It doesn't look very big.

oh right.
I'll take…Heinz with me. Typing is cool.

"I'm fine, though I'd like to have my pokemon looked after. I came up from Umberreach, so I wanted to make sure they were in good shape."

Try not to shiver.

"Continue, Phil! Take down!"

Roll #1 7 = 7

The last Amateur competition only had a handful of people, so this doesn't surprise me. Is there a registration sign somewhere? I'd like to ask what type of contest they are running.

You're off to a Flying start when you push through the foliage to observe a Scyther cutting free some mushrooms from nearby trees.

"Right. Give me a moment and your Pokemon will be fighting fit."

Do do dododo

"Finish it! Hydro Pump!"

Phil fainted!

There's no sign at all. It looks just like all the other houses.

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Let's take off the headphones and knock.

Once I've got them all in good shape, time to head over to the people-hospital. Hopefully the fact I have no monies will not deter them from giving me a check-up.

You wait a bit and finally the door opens. A mousey looking girl with thick glasses answers the door.

"Uh, yes?"

You head into the free clinic.

There's a bit of a wait here, but you put your name on the list.

People in here vary from looking completely fine to on death's door.

Keep the flyer in plain view.

"Hi, I'm Kingsley, and, umm, this flyer says you're having a Pokemon Contest. Am I at the right place and time?"

Well, I've only got head hickies, I should be fine.
Let's review a bit of data about Vanilla City while I wait. Read up on the Item Development labs and local gym leader.
And might as well look into the shrine while I'm here, see what's available for that.

Oooooh dear. "You ready, Heinz? This is gonna be fun."

Incinerate! Also, scan it.

Roll #1 9 = 9

"Normal Fairy… "

" Dovoi! Giga Drain!"

Roll #1 4 = 4

"Uh, yeah. Come in. We usually just don't get new people."

She invites you in. This place is pretty tiny and cramped – it's basically a one room apartment with a mini kitchen in hut format. On the sofa, there are two other people waiting. One's an old guy with a stout little hat, and the other is another girl, around this one's age.

There's a piece in the news about a partnership between the now-famous Professor Orange and multinational corporation Sylph Co. They're going to be working on a way to bring evolutionary stones to the masses. The process being developed is apparently "top secret", which makes you wonder why they're reporting about it.

Vacuum Wave!

Incinerate was super effective!

Dovoi refuses to listen to you!

"Looks like you haven't finished bonding with Dovoi yet! Azurill, Play Rough!"

It was a critical hit!!

Azurill L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Dovoi L5 [▓░░░░░░░░░]

Great gastlies, this is gonna be a rough one.
"Keep at it Heinz! Fire Fang!"

Roll #1 10 = 10

"Thank you."

"Are you two aspiring Coordinators too?"

"I see. There's no point in you being hurt if you don't want to."

Recall Dovoi and send in Haman.

Better than black market rumors, maybe? Hope they get it so that those stones aren't unstable or something.
If I'm not being called to the counter, I'll check out about the local gym next.

Vaccuum Wave!

A critical hit! IT was super effective!

Scyther fainted! Heinz reached level 18.

Heinz L17 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]

"I guess."

"Oh, I dare say I coordinated a Pokemon or two back in my day. Things were better then, of course. Not so much fancy rulings. Just the best Pokemon wins."

"Gramps, comon."

"Hydro pump!"

It was super effective! A one hit wonder! Haman fainted!

There's not much in the news about it, though you glean they're really involved with Items.

Finally you're called up.

Up we go, then.

They send you into Exam Room 4.

"What seems to be the – ah, I see."

"Mismar! Swift!"

Roll #1 8 = 8

"I thought there were always rules like these. What did they start adding since you were a Coordinator?"

"Yep. Woke up in the woods between here and Umberreach after having this really weird dream. It felt real, but I guess I can thank whatever gave me these is the reason for that."

Huh. I'm not sure how to feel about that…but Heinz was a real trooper regardless. Can we get healed or do we have to go onwards?

"No room to recover – Play Rough!"

Azurill L5 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

Mismar L5 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

"Oh, everything I suppose. Back in the day you didn't have all these standardizations."

"Mmmmhmmm. Seen this before. Those are Malamar Spots. It hypnotizes victims and devours thoughts and flesh. Hopefully you don't feel too stupid, because that's harder to fix. Your flesh looks mostly alright: I guess you were too salty. I can get you a cream for that."

No one said you couldn't.

"You said earlier that it was the best Pokemon who won. Without standards, how could you determine that?"

Well let's go do that, since I doubt we'll get far after that.

"Do they go away on their own? I might just wear a hat if they do."
I'll frown a little.
"And I don't feel stupid, but the dream I had was really weird. And not colors-and-patterns-weird, I'm talking I-could-feel-it-weird."

"Too many rules obfuscate something as elegant as intellect. You can tell how smart a Pokemon is in the way it moves, the way it acts, the way it thinks. Not in whether or not it can name a capital or divide some big numbers."

"Gramps, you're em-bar-ass-ing me!"

You head back to the contest hall where there's a little nurse station.

Do do dododo

"It's a false dream. Anything your brain can feel, it can simulate. Try not to read too much into it."

"Hmm. You know what my Staryu can do, even."

"Recover anyway, Mismar! He has to miss sometime!"

Hooray for modern amenities!
Let's go back out in the same direction and look again!

Roll #1 8 = 8

"You misunderstand – I was talking about MY Pokemon!"

Play Rough!

Azurill L5 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

Mismar L5 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]

More Flying Pokemon here. You spot a Vivillion on a nearby flower.

"But the weird part is that, in the dream, I ended up in Vanilla city. And the layout is exactly the same, even though I've never been here before in my life."
I'll shrug.
"It just creeps me out, because the rest of the dream was some pretty bleak stuff."

"It's possible the Malamar knew the layout."

Interesting…I've never seen one of those before!
Incinerate and scan again.

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Maybe. Still got a bad feeling about it."
I'll shake my head.
"Anyway, thanks for the once-over, doc. I don't think I'll be able to afford that salve you mentioned, since I'm pretty much broke, but thanks for telling me about it."

Laugh a little.

"You know, I kind of dig the way your he's talking about a smart Pokemon. I'd like to raise to them to the point where we know what's expected from each other without saying a word to each other."

"But still, if you take the time to teach them all that stuff, you took the time and effort to help your Pokemon learn new stuff. I wouldn't mind being graded on how hard I helped my Pokepal learn."

Refocus myself.

"A bit of space. Mismar, Bubblebeam!"

Or water gun if he hasn't learned that, info sheet pls

Roll #1 10 = 10

Scale Pokemon
The patterns on this Pokémon’s wings depend on the climate and topography of its habitat. It scatters colorful scales.

Super Effective!

Vivillon L18 [▓░░░░░░░░░]

Heinz L18 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░]

"Alright, well, I'll give you a prescription anyway."

Got prescription!

Scalpdo – It has what scalps crave! Electrolytes!

"We gonna get this show on the road?"

A critical hit! Azurill fainted!

Shrine Keeper Ivan is about to send in…

For a Smart Contest, my best bet is probably Shuckle.

"Pallet, let's show them our best."

"Thank you."
And with that, it's… back to the pokecenter. I need to swap someone out with Lola. I'll swap out Vivi, since this isn't her kind of town. Too much industry.
…Makes me wonder how Oswald will react if I let him out of his ball. Probably shouldn't, though. Fairies don't like these kinds of places.

"Alright, let's go!"

She flips off the lights and pulls out a flashlight and shines it on the table in the middle.

"Center stage! Check it out! For each question there are four cards – possible answer choices for each question. The first Pokemon to answer each question gets the point – first to five points wins! Ready?"

Pallet braces himself for Amateur mind combat!

He would probably assassinate a president.

Send in Klefki! Will Arthur change Pokemon?

Mismar L5 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]
>Haman L5 [░░░░░░░░░░]
>Dovoi L5 [▓░░░░░░░░░]
>Philmarilion L5 [░░░░░░░░░░]
>Julia L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]
>Trish L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

But I'm a bad enough dude to save the president. I'm sure of it.
Anyway, swap out who I need to swap out (Vivi for Lola). Let's poke around town and check out the Gym.

Throw the ball!

"You can do it Pallet. I know you've been listening in to my radio when we're traveling. You'll know this question."

Roll #1 4 = 4

He might absolve your sins if you broke a covenant, but you're not sure if he's from Carim.

You look around for a place to shape up and pump iron, but only find a place where refined iron is pumped into shape. Vanilla City Gym. It's half gym and half item factory!

Shake shake… shake shake…

Gotcha! Vivillion was caught! Give a nickname to caught Vivillion?

Well, that's where I was headed. Let's take a wander inside.

File: 1395973301811.png (239.8 KB, 1646x1391, teams.png)

A bespectacled man is standing next to some slabs with names on them. There's a catwalk above, as well as a staircase up to it. Covering the floors of the facilities are conveyor belts where items are being made. Trainers are down there, too.

Damn. Haman is down. Looks steel, this thing.

"Mismar, you have to rest! Go, Trish!"

How am I feeling?

Roll #1 6 = 6

Hmm. Name it…Pablo.

Should I go back to the start line now, or can I keep looking?

Fighting on the production floor? That can't be OSHA safe…
Let's count how many trainers there are, and how many are already engaged in battles.

Still focused and calm. It's a pokemon battle, there's a way, a way…

Even if your studies didn't inform you of your type, you still have a Pokedex for plausible deniability.

Feeling? Alright. Maybe a little down that your team got mostly wiped by his first mon, but he did say this is one of the hardest in the whole country.

You can continue looking for one more hour. Remember, you can only keep one.

There are seven trainers. This is kind of a slow time of night so you don't have a wait.

Then let's do that. Keep an eye out for something.

Roll #1 4 = 4

"You got this, Pallet."

Well, let's get a gauge on what I'm walking into here. Put Lola at the front of my party, and let's walk down to challenge the first Gym Trainer.

"Alright – question number one! This one's easy, in Tianxia how many badges are needed to visit Gray City?"

Roll #1 5, 3, 4 = 12

"Cripple it NOW! THUNDER WAVE!"

rolling if needed

Roll #1 9 = 9

Pallet scoots over to the cards but the old man's Bulbasaur nabs the 8 card with his vines!

"That's right! 8!"

Aha! A beedrill just over there.

The guy with spectacles stops you.

"HEY! Champ in the making! Don't you know it's unsafe to walk on conveyor belts? Take the catwalk!"

There's a catwalk?
"Alright, I kinda figured that, but thanks."
Take the catwalk. And do my little turn, until I get to that first gym trainer.

"Next time Pallet, worry about struggling for the next card."

Roll #1 4 = 4

Beedrill, huh? Not sure if that's any better than Vivillion. Still, nothing ventured.
Fire Fang!

"Klefki! Don't let up! Play Rough!"

Klefki was paralyzed!

Klefki PAR [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Trish L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

"Don't give in Klefki! We've been through so much together!"

Yep. There sure was.

Finally you get stopped by a trainer.

"I hope you studied your item use before you showed up here!"

"Alright, this time, how many resistances does Dragon type have?"

Bulbasaur nabs it again! The old man chuckles.

"Eh heh heh."

Super effective! It was a one hit wonder! Heinz reached level 19!

"Practical experience counts, right?"
And Lola's up.

Guess he wasn't going to win me anything. What's left to find here?

Roll #1 1 = 1

"And we'll be through far more, Trish! We won't be held back! That's why we walk the world! ELECTROWEB!"

Roll #1 9 = 9

"You'll have another chance Pallet. I believe in you. This is all stuff you should have overhead up talking about, you just gotta recycle it here."

Roll #1 3 = 3

You spend the rest of your hour walking around trying to find your way back. At last you do. Time to see how you measured up!

"We'll see!"

GYM AIDE TYLER wants to fight!

GYM AIDE TYLER sent out Furret!

You're in charge, Lola!

"Play Rough again! Take him down!"

Klefki PAR [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Trish L5 [▓▓░░░░░░░░]

"Which berry restores health!"

Bulbasaur snags it again! "Oran, that's right!"

"Lola, use Hyper Fang!" '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

"You can get the next one Pallet. You've just been biding your time."

Roll #1 5 = 5

Welp. I really would have liked to enter with that Scyther, but c'est la vie. At least Heinze had a good time. Let's go get judged!

"Every shock to hold him down! DON'T GIVE ANY SPACE! WE WON'T BE PLAYED WITH! ELECTROWEB!"

Roll #1 10 = 10

"Certain-Kill Fang, eh? I'm using XATTACK!"

Furret L17 [▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░░]

Lola L16 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Trainers are dropping off their spare balls and headed to crowd around the stage where trainers who got Pokemon are showing off.

You've slowed him down just enough with Paralysis, and a critical hit at a critical moment! Klefki fainted!

"Klefki! You've surprised me, trainer, but I still have Cottonee."

Will Arthur change Pokemon?

Once again Bulbasaur grabs it first when the question of "Which type is Flying immune to?" comes up

"Four in a row! Wow, that's impressive!"

Well, judging by the name, that won't make being hit pleasant.
"Alright, Lola, let's keep up the pressure! Use Bite!" '1d10'
Hope he flinches…

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Come! Trish and I will strike you down! I invite you!"

Oh dear, this is so unlike me, but I can't stop. I mustn't stop!

Trish stays in. How's she look?

He didn't flinch, but he did miss!

Furret L17 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

Lola L16 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Let's do that then. Drop muh balls off and time to show off!

She's pretty beaten up.

"Go, Cottonee!"

"That bite took a lot of fight out of him! Let's finish him off with another one! Bite attack!" '1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

"Don't worry Pallet, you'll get the next one."

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Another one! Thunder wave! Give no chance!"

Roll #1 9 = 9

Your caught Pokemon is submitted to a battery of tests.

Finally, it's announcement time!

"Where is the biggest body of water on mainland Tianxia?"

Pallet finally gets one! It's …

"Good, on Route 6!"

By a single point of speed, he goes first.

"Dazzling Gleam!"

Trish fainted!

"Come on back, Lola, you did great!"
I'll nod to the other trainer.
"I was worried for a second, actually. If your Furret hadn't missed that first attack, this would have gone a lot differently, I think.

"Trish, you won't go unavenged! Julia! Hypnosis!"

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Good work Pallet, you can make a come back!"

Roll #1 9 = 9

They announce the top three bugs! They were a Pincir… A Scyther… and a Fortress!

Darnit. Oh well, at least you got a new Pokemon. You got a Shed Shell as a consolation prize.

Pablo was sent to the PC.

Julia is upset that you sent her in when you said you wouldn't!

Julia used Hypnosis! Foe Cottonee is fast asleep…

"Wake up Cottonee!"

"This Pokemon is known for turning Berries into Berry Juice!"

"Hey, it feels like you had an unfair advantage! But… you're right, it's Shuckle!"

Bulbasaur 4
Pallet 2

"Just be careful! The Gym Leader won't go down as easily as me!"

"It's still the right answer Pallet, good show so far."

Roll #1 9 = 9

Dang. I have to wonder if that Scyther would have won. Oh well.
Let's pick everyone up and go back to the town.

"Which direction does the sun rise from?"

"Right! East!"

Pallet 3

Townward bound!

You stop in the Pokecenter too

do do dododo

"Julia… give me two turns. Run back to me when you've had enough. But if you want to take charge and grasp the first thread of our future, then! Take hold and taste! Lick!"

Roll #1 3 = 3

I wonder how they get the machines to make that noise?
Anyway, what directions can we go into out of town?

"Nice! Almost there, Pallet."

Roll #1 6 = 6

Cottonee woke up! Cottonee used Giga Drain! It was a critical hit! It wasn't very effective…

Cottonee L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Julia L5 [▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░]

This is Sapshire. It's either north to Fogmire or south to Fandango City. Or west to Autumn Glen.

"I'd be disappointed if he did."
Let's move on to the next gym trainer. This one might be harder. Lola will still be up front.

"Which way does a compass point!"

"North! Great job! We're all tied up, amazing!"

"Almost there Shuckle, just a little more!"

Roll #1 10 = 10

Right. South to Fandango it is! I'll pop out Millie and let her hitch a ride as well.
"So, what's on your mind?"

Roll #1 7 = 7

"Are you ready for fight?"

GYM AIDE Terry wants to fight!

The old geezer stumbles backwards onto the couch when Shuckle grabs a card with amazing speed!

"You're right – that makes five! Shuckle wins! Congratulations!"

Your mind.

"We're ready! Let's go, Lola!"

"Are you afraid? I'm afraid, too. But we can't back down yet! Not without knowing how far we can go! Shall we continue?"

Does Julia look more confident?

Perception check

"Aw yeah! Good work Pallet!"

Roll #1 3 = 3

I chuckle.
"You're so literal-minded."
Search the route?

Roll #1 6 = 6

You're not sure – it's hard to tell with a battle going on what she's thinking! You may have learned a lot in the past few months about bonding with Pokemon, but it's a whole other challenge to discern emotion in a split second between blows.

"I'm impressed young man. I thought your Pokemon didn't stand a snowball's chance in the west."

There are Pokemon about!

A fearsome Scolipede blocks your path!

Ah! Now that's a big bug!
Have Millie use Confusion!

Roll #1 1 = 1

"You.. I'll always be with you, Julia. You can rest now and win another day, or you can stake it all right now! We might lose - this time. But every loss is fuel to burn for our rightful victory! IF YOU WANT TO STAY THERE, HYPNOSIS!"

Roll #1 8 = 8

"I was getting pretty worried there, I'll admit."

"But Bulbasaur gave us a run too. How did he get like that?"

I don't think this is a good idea–

A Venoshock from a level 30 Scolipede is nothing to scoff at!! You should've checked to see what level that thing evolves!

Cottonee is fast asleep…

Cottonee SLP [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓]

Julia L5 [▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░]

Pick her up and run away!

"I'll stand with you, Julia. Lick!"

Roll #1 6 = 6

Give Green one more squeeze and check my pokedex, is it okay? Can I open up the phone app?

You grab her in your arms and sprint away, Scolipede is hot on your trail.

The city gates are too far, and at eight feet, it towers above you, looming for a mighty blow that you certainly can't sustain.

There's a big rock up ahead… that might buy you a moment's reprieve if you can make it there!

"You're in charge – Onix!"

There's a loud smash as the giant, snake-like beast bursts from its shell onto the catwalk before you. You steady yourself as you hang unevenly above the churning machinery below.

Your Pokedex chimes to life –

Onix, the Rock Snake Pokemon. Onix tunnels under the ground at over fifty miles per hour, which causes tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes a long way. The massive, winding tunnels it leaves behind are used as homes by Diglett.

Lola takes an uncertain step forward – that trainer certainly looks confident…

Ha! Waterproof too? This thing is great! It chimes to life the moment you open it up.

Cottonee is fast asleep…

Cottonee SLP [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░]

Julia L5 [▓▓▓▓▓░░░░░]

Okay. Call mom.

Bring bring…

"Mom speaking! How's the adventure going, Emily?"

Take a deep breath and try to sound cheerful. "Mom, I.. I have so much to tell you. I've beaten two shrines. My pokemon have started to evolve. They are so strong mom. So very strong! You wouldn't believe it!"

"Julia! This might be harsh, but if we want to win, we got to give it everything! I'll look out for you if you're afraid. You can come back and I'll switch you out. But now the stage has you as its star! THIS TIME IS YOURS! CURSE!"

Roll #1 6 = 6

She gives a cheerful laugh. "Oh, I believe it. I bet you take after me in my youth!"

Run for the rock! Though I don't know if I can climb it fast enough to evade an eight-foot centipede…

Well, recall Millie and give it a shot. Maybe I can just run around it until it loses interest!

"What's an Onix doing in a normal-type gym?"
I'll shake my head.
"Lola, come on back. This is a bad matchup. Lucas, you're up!"
And I'll switch out pokes.

Julia fainted!

Cottonee woke up! Use next Pokemon?

>Mismar L5 [▓▓▓▓░░░░░░]

>Dovoi L5 [▓░░░░░░░░░]

Cottonee L5 [▓▓▓▓▓▓▓░░░]

Between each of the beats of your heart, you hear ten clicking claws on stone! Roll!

He bursts out laughing. "You came to the wrong building, trainer. You're not in the idiotic Normal Shrine. You're in the Vanilla City Gym!

He tosses some kind of object straight up into the air – Onix leaps up and grabs it in his mouth, swallowing it. He seems to shimmer with newfound power.

Laugh a bit too. "I'll have all the badges in no time, you'll see.
Oooh, I haven't told you about Shauna! She's a girl I met in Sapshire. She loves bug pokemon, almost as much as I love grass types. But I'm getting on so well with all my pokemon Mom.. I don't know if I'll be able to go back to just grass types! "

oh god oh god oh god oh god that bug is huge

Roll #1 10 = 10

Dire hit? Check my pokedex for what that item does.
"Lucas, use Force Palm!" '1d10'

Roll #1 10 = 10

B-but curse only removes half hp

Confirm this is happening?

She laughs "Well, you don't have to give up your Pokemon friends just because you stop adventuring! But when I grew out of my adventure age I gave away my Pokemon to good homes. I'm sure you'll meet plenty of great kids in your travels who just want a Pokemon to help them get started. You can really change a life!"

You dive for the rock – will you? WILL YOU?

Like a WHOLE HERD of Tauros, you hear the Scolipede trample on, over the rock, using it as a ramp and barreling on right past your refuge, into the woods!

Dire Hit… increases critical hit ratio

Lucas makes contact with Onix, blasting him with a Force Palm. Onix falls off the catwalk, but the force is so great the catwalk itself shatters! You slam down onto a conveyor belt on the first floor. Inches away from your face a compressor plate slams down onto a hunk of metal, reforming it into an item… and you slide directly under the compressor next.

Julia only had 1/2 HP

Shoot shoot shoot
Get off that conveyer belt! '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

"..Yea I really did change Shauna's life.. I helped her catch a pokemon of her own.."
pause, sniffle a bit.
"Mom. I love so much. I.. Thank you for letting me come on this journey.. and I love you."

Goddamn it, I can't see on phone proper

"Julia, you were very brave. Thank you."
"Mismar! End it fast! Swift! You, my first above all!"

Roll #1 8 = 8

Phew…I should really be able to sense something like that.
Crawl out, and make sure to pay attention to wherever it just ran off to.

"Sorry about that…I guess I just wasn't thinking."

You move to escape just before it crushes you, but you can't move quick enough – the bitter end is coming when

Everything comes to a halt.

A strapping man in a gym outfit pulls you out from under.

"Well, well! Don't leave us just yet, I hear you're quite the competitor. I'm Gym Leader Gastaph. From the looks of it, you gave one of my aides quite the battle."

"Aww… I love you too, honey. That's why I knew it was safe to trust you."

Swift hits!

It was super effective! Mismar fainted!

Mismar L5 [░░░░░░░░░░]

Cottonee L5 [▓▓▓░░░░░░░]

Use final Pokemon?

>Dovoi L5 [▓░░░░░░░░░]

She's totally KO'd.

It tore off into the woods, leaving a big hole in the foliage in its wake…

I'll open one eye slowly, then scramble off the conveyer belt.
"It sure looks like… wait, hang on."
I'll look around.
"Lucas? Are you still up on the catwalk?"

He's.. on the first floor. With his paw on the EMERGENCY STOP button.

Send out Dovoi.

"Can you feel it? We're about to win, Dovoi. Do you like that name? You can wear it or cast it off, I can't decide that for you. You can do it, I know you can. Do you want to, though? FAIRY WIND! TAKE OUR VICTORY!"

Roll #1 10 = 10

Where are we on the road exactly? How far from the next town?

"Thanks mom, I'm headed toward Fogmire now. Its supposed to really spooky. But I'll be okay. I have a shedinja, she.. he.. it? I call it midnight, but anyway, I'm trying really hard to understand Midnight before I get there, so I'll have a head start on the ghost shrine. Ghosts are so different, they don't eat, or make sounds, or anything."

"You are the best pokemon. The best."
I'll sag until I'm sitting on the floor, then breathe for a minute.
After I've collected myself from a near-death experience, I'll shake my head and stand back up, meeting the gym leader's eyes.
"Sorry about the catwalk, sir."

File: 1396413917975.png (13.95 KB, 298x425, badges.png)

Dovoi closes with the enemy and… he disobeyed!

He used Giga Drain instead! Cottonee fainted!

"Amazing! I didn't think you could do it!"

Got money and experience for defeating Shrine Keeper Ivan!

"You know what this means, don't you? You won with a fairy Pokemon, proving that you do have the capability to bond with them. But look – even though you won, you won his way, not yours. He used his own move to win, rather than just relying on your commands. If you want to become truly equal partners, and bond to your fullest… you have to learn to trust in one another. Realize that as a Trainer you need to understand your Pokemon and trust their instincts as much as your own. For bonding with your Dovoi and winning fairly in battle, I award you this: The Magic Badge. To some, magic is the naivete of children, but you've proven to yourself the importance of the sense of wonder in this world!"

He holds out a little magic hat and wand-shaped badge.

He laughs. "Don't worry about it! Where better to break a catwalk than a factory that builds things? I saw you took out his Onix with a Fighting Steel type. I hope you don't think you can rely just on good typings to win here. You'll need all your item knowledge!"

Hm… off in the distance you see Sapshire. It's a it further still to the south to get to Fandango.

"Shedinja, eh? That sounds like a pretty cool Pokemon. I'll have you know back in my adventuring days I thought ghost pokemon were pretty scary – but fun!"

"I was kinda hoping the typings would give me at least a little wiggle room on pokemon that don't use items they hold."
I'll scratch my head for a moment.
"Would that count as a win, though? Or an incomplete?"

"Well, you're here to learn, I suppose? How about I teach you something before we battle, then?"

"I… thank you. And sorry for my behaviour just now during the match, yelling like that, I think I got a little too into it. Unless that had anything to do with the wonder you're talking about? "

Take the wand and hat. Put on the hat. I might fit in a little better.

"Really?" let myself feel calm and excited. "Well I can't wait to see what their shrine is like then! I wonder if Shauna went there.. I'm gonna go mom, I love you!"
wait for her answer before hanging up.

It's a badge. It won't fit on your head. You must be imagining things because of fairies again!

He giggles. "Maybe! Maybe it just means you still have the fighting spirit."

"Love you too, honey. Bye!"

I'll nod.
I'll wave Lucas over, and give him a good head rub for saving my life.
"I owe you something nice. Maybe after we get through the gym, I'll even be able to afford it!"

Lets get going. Moving will help me dry off a little faster. '1d10' go toward fogmire.

Roll #1 7 = 7

Hm. Well, I'd rather not backtrack at this point. I'll just have to keep my eyes out.
Shift Chopshop up front and keep going. Carefully this time.

Roll #1 1 = 1

"Did you know, according to legend, humans used to be like Pokemon? No different, in fact! Perhaps we still are, in a way – much is still unknown about Yamask. Do you know what made us diverge? Become different than Pokemon?"

A spooky swamp lay between you and Fogmire… You crossed it once before, but at least then it was day! You see moving lights in the darkness… is it merely a trick of the eyes, or is there truly something out there… lurking in the dark?

You follow after Chopshop for a good long way until suddenly he stops without warning and will not continue. You edge around his bulky body and spot his troubles: up ahead there's a terrifying Pidgey!

As a Flying type, it is his natural enemy.

I'll shake my head.

A…Pidgey? "Really? I could understand if it was a big one but…"

I take out the 'dex and scan it. Is it at least strong?

Lights? I must be imaging things.. all that sea water messing with my head. '1d10' get a closer look anyway.

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Fighting spirit, huh? I guess something like that is why I even decided to start travelling. I knew I had to find something better, or learn to carve it myself… anything more you can tell me about learning to communicate with my pokemon? I really want to know what they think, feel but I'm afraid I'm still far from that."

"Seriously, I'm just feeling fortunate that I listened to the news a little more often than I used to do for Pallet here to know all that. How do you do it?"

"The use of tools – more specifically items! The most a Pokemon can ever hope to do is use an item that a human has created – hold it, or eat it when fed. We humans are the innovators – we create, we think, we imagine. All that power is up in that brain of yours – and it's the reason that we humans are in charge of Pokemon and catch them to train them. So in short… if you don't use items, you're really no better than a feral Pokemon yourself! But don't despair – that's what this academy is for. Teaching you how great items are!"

Hm… doesn't seem so. It's Chopshop's secret fear!

Pidgey, the Tiny Bird Pokemon, Pidgey is a Flying Pokémon. Among all the Flying Pokémon, it is the gentlest and easiest to capture. A perfect target for the beginning Pokémon Trainer to test his Pokémon's skills. Pidgey's Gust power creates tornadoes. It also has a Sand-Attack.

You end up wandering way too deep into the swamp… there are lights dancing all around you on all sides… it's pretty spooky.

"I think you've got a great start already. Just come back to me if you can't figure it out on your own! Meanwhile.. yawn… I think I need to be put down for a nap."

"Hmm… like I always said, my Bulbasaur's just naturally smart! Some trainers say they eat brain food or study, but Bulbasaur is just good as he is! Maybe in the big leagues you can get a better tip."

I'll share a look with Lucas.
"But don't some wild pokemon have berries and other items sometimes?"

"Sure, like I said, a Pokemon has the ingenuity to just use an item - but it takes a human to create one! You have limitless potential inside you – I believe in you, yes, even without battling you, I know that because you're human, you can become great if only you try!"

Maybe Ninjask can help. "Rena, go! spot us a way back to the road." '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

"I think you gave me enough to start with that."

Is there a second part to the Smart competition, or can I take my leave now?

"Is that all? C'mon, you're a big guy. I bet it's more scared of you than you are of it."
Can I get a read on him?

Roll #1 2 = 2

Rena squats down and gives you a confident, curt ninja nod. The lights seem to dim and back away… making it darker and harder to follow Rena…

Roll reflex!

Nope! You're officially graduated! No more Amateur Time – it's Mediocre Time!

He stoicly refuses to budge. You can't even push him!

"Alright. I need to give my team a rest, anyway. A reward, too. Thank you very much for the battle."

Head back to the center and heal up. Check for level ups.

I'll scratch my head, and then stop suddenly. I probably shouldn't do that until I get that medical cream for those sucker marks.
"Alright… I don't suppose there's a less dangerous arena so that I can challenge you to a gym battle?"

"Wow, you already know the way? Don't fly so fast!"
'1d10' follow her!

Roll #1 5 = 5

Do do dododo

That was the last battle with stats ever! Your statistics are deeeaaaaaad.

With that, he waves and indicates the back. He raises a big garage door, revealing a big open arena in the backyard.

He presses a button, and the arena retracts, revealing a series of conveyor belts. "Don't worry, these are OSHA approved for battling on."

Woah, a tree is falling down out of nowhere! Bam! It collapsed right on top of you! Fortunately, Rena returned in time to help absorb the blow… it's penning you down but it didn't break anything.

"Whhaaa, are you strong enough to lift this up Rena?" '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

"I know birds can be scary sometimes, but it's so tiny! I bet you could scare it off! C'mon, give it a shot."
Keep on trying. If he freezes up like that with a Pidgey, he's gonna be in trouble if we see something like a Fearow or worse.

Roll #1 8 = 8

I'll give them an uncertain look.
"So… our pokemon battle on the belts?"
I'll fiddle with Lola's pokeball. Don't need to call Lucas back yet, since it'll do him good to watch for a minute. Get a good read on the leader's pokemon.

You get REALLY disoriented for a minute when you feel yourself lifting… but then all of a sudden you realize you're back down there on the ground in front of yourself! You're… a ghost!

And now you can see perfectly through the night – there are Ghost Types all around you! Most alarmingly, a Gengar who has pulled you out of your body!

Rena looks around confusedly, and tugs on your body to get it loose. Suddenly Midnight pops out of… its ball and turns directly toward you – the most acknowledgement you think you've ever had out of it!

He flexes his huge jaws in anticipation and…

Sprints off into the woods in the opposite direction, dragging you along with him!

Grab… onto something… to stop him!

He hasn't sent any out. He seems more content to fiddle with some item in his hand.

"Oh, yes. A little more of a challenge that way, don't you think?"

What moves
Muh progress
My money?

Either way, let everyone out and give them each a poffin.

"For the best display of courage, cunning and the power I have seen. Well-earned."

"Seems that way. By the way, I've only got the one certification so far."

I'll make sure to proper leave the house and head down the coast to Fandango City. First stop, though, will be Sapshire and Swamp Road.

Roll #1 2 = 2

"H-hey! Calm down!"
Oh man I hope he doesn't pull my arms off…

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Midnight? You knew I was in trouble?" Look relieved. "I need help. Please, Work together with Rena and get rid of this tree?"
'2d10' jolly cooperation?

Roll #1 9, 7 = 16

No progress, only casualization to appeal to a wider audience now.

They seem pleased enough with their victory, with the exception of Julia who is still upset.

"Hm, then I will use three Pokemon against you. You can use all six, but frankly if you haven't won by the time you get to Pokemon number four, you probably haven't learned anything about items at all."

You manage to steer him into a rock, where he collapses. Whew!

They free the tree from your body, but while they're turned around, Gengar grabs you and flies off with you.

You're… you're flying! Are you terrified or joyous?

Swamp Road it is! It'll be spooky at night. There's a guard at the city gate.

"Beware traveling Swamp Road at night."

"Fair enough."
Now, I think Lola was roughed up a little, so I'm going to use a potion on her so she's back to fighting fit.

At least my pokemon can fly after me. "RENA, MIDNIGHT!" Call out to them.

"Oh, my candle, I'm sure I've got that!"

Search my bags for it. '1d10'

Roll #1 5 = 5

'1d10' add a roll to that.

Roll #1 10 = 10

"Julia? How did you feel just now? I'm very happy that you stayed in and helped us win. You were the bravest of us all."

How's she? Will she take a poffin?

I wince and kneel down.
"Sorry about that…I guess we'll need to work on that, huh? Well, get some rest."
Let's see…Dreamcast's turn. Keep on heading for Fandango.

Roll #1 2 = 2

Rena doesn't seem to notice, but Midnight takes off after you! Where is Gengar taking you?! You're flying so fast!! SO FAST! Something… there's something huge up in the distance, in the mountains!

Ah, there it is.

She's very grumpy grouchy.

Dreamcast floats on in a bubbly manner, making quirky computer sounds.

"Gengar? Where are we going?" try to see where we are going. '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

Let's make sure I have an ignition source for it and that my Pokedex is powered up in case I have to use the LED.

Now, head forth! Through Swamp Road with Pallet at the ready! '1d10'

Roll #1 8 = 8

It's… a great ruined castle, up at the peak of the mountain! So much of it is ruined, that only one corner tower is still intact. Gengar flies you up to the top and points in the window, urging you to look.

Scritch, flash! All lit up!

"Hey, if it makes you feel better, you can take it out on me. I've always wondered what a lick feels like. But remember, you stayed in because you wanted to. I told you you could come back at any time. But you didn't. You stayed in by your own will."

Give her an extra poffin.

"You sure are an odd one. Don't think I know too much about you, DC."
Can I understand his noises?

Roll #1 1 = 1

"What's wrong Gengar?"
'1d10' look in the window.

Roll #1 8 = 8

Let's go, down to Sapshire we go! '1d10'

Roll #1 7 = 7

Not even the slightest.

There's an Aegislash chained to the ground here. A figure in a black cloak is giving orders to a pack of Honedge, which seem terrified. You see that the Honedge disperse out the building down into the swampy valley below where they in turn assault other Pokemon – and no doubt any trainers that come by. Come to think of it – that tree that fell on you was cut!!

You think you understand now – this man is exploiting Aegislash to use its young Honedge to harass everyone in the swamp! Oh no – You see Kingsley down in the swamp about to be beset by Honedge too! Gengar must want you to help lift this tyranny and imbalance!

You head down the Swamp Road to Sapshire, when suddenly you feel a strange gust in front of you… something feels terribly wrong. Like you're being watched with ill intent.

I pet him anyway.
"Well, you're a cool guy regardless. I wonder what it was like inside that Pokedex for you anyway."

And add
"You showed yourself born great. I'm very proud of you."

Gasp in horror. "Its going to get Kingsely! Gengar. Can you fly us down to that boy?"

He chirps and your Pokedex replies, echoing his sounds. He has weird effects on machines!

She just pouts and floats about restlessly.

"Yo'! Anyone out there!?"

Flash my Pokedex's light around, it ain't cool to sneak up on people at this time of night.

Roll #1 9 = 9

I take it out and look at it, then show it to him.
"Huh. Can you talk to it?"

He grabs you and deposits you on his back before flying you down into the swamp.

They're all around him!

You see nothing but… really odd patterns in the mud… you have a REALLY bad feeling about this…

"Alright, whenever you're ready, then."

He focuses on it and it makes PokePC sounds.

Ba bradabrabring!

"Pallet, you feeling as bad as I am right now?"

"Gengar, hurry, he's going to get hurt."

"Pallet, you heard that, get ready!"

I take another look at it. Do I notice anything different he might have done to it?

Roll #1 4 = 4

He sends out a Wugglytuff and ties a sash onto her forehead. Then he feeds her something.

"I think I'm all set too!"

He replies by retreating into his shell.

He can't hear you! It must be something to do with being a spooky ghost right now!

Gengar hurtles Emily toward her body so she can reconnect with it, and in the meanwhile engages the invisible ghosts!

You heard nothing! But your suspicions are confirmed with ghosts appear before you!

You are surrounded by hostile Honedge, but a friendly Gengar seems intent on fending them off – but he's taking a beating!

There are all kinds of weirdo symbols on the screen!

I'll raise an eyebrow.
"Lola, you're up first. Be careful, though!"

"Or did you feel like you had no choice? I'm sorry, then. I thought it'd be a great chance to let you get more confident. A hard fight that we couldn't have won without you."

Huh…I hope that's not permanent. I fiddle with it a bit, see if anything noteworthy comes up.

How close are we to Fandango now?

Roll #1 1 = 1

Gasp with surprise as I re-enter my body.
"What. Rena?! Midnight? Are you here? We have to help Kingsley!"

"Not again! Why'd it have to be ghosts? But, I can't let this stop us."

Switch out Pallet for Canvas, he might be my best shot here.

You'll probably have to replace it!

You've arrived.

She just sulks a bit, but you think you're getting through, just a little.

Wigglytuff gives a confident smirk and steps onto the belt system.

The two of them nod and take off with you toward the nearby Kingsley – Gengar is getting beat up trying to protect him!

Done and done! Canvas's Impostor! Canvas became Honedge!

"Oh geez, DC…."

Where can I do something like that?

I was kidding, it's probably alright.

You've arrived at Fandango.

"Remember I'm your trainer, I have to listen to you. So Julia, if you're still angry, give me a lick. I can take it."

I think.

Julia gives you a very half-hearted lick.

It feels totally supernatural, like a chill running down your spine and every hair on your body standing up at the same time. Eeeeh….

Well, now you know what you're dishing out to enemies.

Don't scare me like that, brain! I give you a magic cookie and this is how you thank me?

This place was the…poison city, right? What's it like here?

Ooh. Imagine the power of a shadow ball.

Can I discern her personality now?

Roll #1 7 = 7

There's uneven construction in the city. You can see that most of the residential areas are clearly really old rural construction, but the commercial and wharf districts are undergoing heavy construction. It looks like a new apartment building is being put up while an old traveler's inn is being demolished for a more formal hotel. The Pokecenter is going under an expansion and the entire right half of it is walled off with barriers and construction tape as they add a built-in MART.

You're learning more about Julia every day. You suspect she has a Circumspect personality.

Huh…is this some kind of urban renewal going on? Let's go to the Pokemon center, heal up, and ask about all this.

Do do dododo

Yaaay everyone's all better.
Now are there any foremen in here?

No construction presently. They probably work at night.

That's the exact opposite of how I thought things worked! Huh. Live and learn.

I go outside and look around some more. How lively is this city with all this happening?

If you mean "I had thought until now that the time in game mirrored your local time", that was true but it's just cumbersome now if we're going fluff-heavy.

Other buildings have active construction, so you imagine they have made a special exception for the Pokecenter during high traffic hours, and indeed this is one. You had to wait in something of a line and a large number of trainers and other Pokemon owners were sitting there in the lobby.

The wharfs are alive with sailors and fishermen.

What about Dovoi? Hopefully that hard-won glorious victory bonded our hearts~

Roll #1 2 = 2

He seems a little healthier, given that he is your only unfainted Pokemon, though his grevious injuries still leave him mostly uninterested in doing more than licking his wounds and poffin.

I do know how to care for wounds, right? Start with him.

Roll #1 4 = 4

Hmm…I wonder.

Let's go hang out at the docks and see what they're all up to over there. Maybe some fishing will be fun!

What? Why would a state school treat Pokemon first aid? That might encourage trainers to go out in the wilds away from state-provided Pokemon Centers. Then they might get ideas like "I don't need the government".

You don't have a rod, but it's still fun to watch the other fishermen at work. The Magikarp really seem to be biting today. There are a couple of Remoraid, too.

I could have sworn I had a rod. Didn't I catch Needlenose with it?

Oh, quite right, it seems you do.

Well then, fish?

Oh, blast.

They all already went through the healing machine, right? How's Mismar, since he had to fight at a disadvantage?

Roll #1 3 = 3

Roll #1 8 = 8

Hm… something is pulling on your rod…

What? No, you're still in the shrine. You never left.

Pull it in!

Roll #1 10 = 10

I thought we already went back to the center to heal?

Let's get back. Everyone in balls to save their strength.

Roll #1 3 = 3

Woah! An uncommon Carvanha burst from the water – you're dragging it in, but it looks fearsome.

I don't think you did.

Do do dododo

Alright, let's talk to Dovoi since he's feeling better.

"Ready to go? We're going off to see the world outside this castle."

He gives you a questioning look.

Go, Millie! Use Double Team!

Roll #1 2 = 2

"We won't be coming back for a long time. Anyone you want to see first?"

Millie spins around you in a circle, generating phantom images, but Carvanha rips through one after another with his powerful dark Bites.

He flutters his leaves slightly.

"If that's no one, then let's head out. Want to walk with me?"

Check map. Which city did I come from to get here?

Not good! Give it a Confusion, and stay out of its reach!

Roll #1 5 = 5

Dovoi flutters his leaves more urgently.

It's no good! The dangerous, dark fish closes on Millie and grabs a hold of her with his teeth!

Do something!

I'll lead. If you do want to see someone, bring me to them, okay?

Walk out and towards the outside world and see if Dovoi follows.

What moves does Canvas have available to him? They should show up on my 'Dex, right?

Rrrgh! How is it doing that without water to swim through?!

Recall her! Send out Chopshop! Let's see how he likes being on the receiving end! Seismic Toss!

Roll #1 5 = 5

"Alright, let's start this off strong, Lola. Use Hyper Fang!" '1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

This is weird – they only seem to know Pursuit. How unusual! It's unnatural.

You need to wait for Andy, though.

He floats after you.

Chopshop gargles as he takes a few blasts of water to the face.

Wigglytuff navigates a maze of conveyor belts, and Lola and even keep up with her eyes. Coming from behind, Wigglytuff deals a crushing blow to the back of the head before Lola can even act.

Lola's badly hurt, and struggling to stay standing – the moving belts aren't helping.

"Hang in there buddy! At least it's not a bird, right?!"

Brick Break!

Roll #1 7 = 7

Get to the entrance and have a last look of the place. Then if he has no further objections, Dovoi back, Phil in front, head off.

"You must get along great with your Wigglytuff! Return's a move that grows in power the more your pokemon likes you!"
I'll pull ready Lucas's ball.
"Lola, return! Lucas, you're up!"

"Not only that – Return is a TM move! It was engineered by the ingenuity of humans. How can we devise a way to capitalize on a Pokemon's loyal subservience? Thus, Return was born! The only known Pokemon which can naturally learn this move is Lopunny, theorized by some to be as a result of inbreeding, but any Pokemon can learn Return except Wobbuffet, Wynaut, Kricketot, Burmy, Tynamo, and Spewpa."

Dovoi points vaguely off deeper into the woods, the opposite way of the road.

He smashes the fish with a karate chop. It looks weak – it's retreating to the water!

"Oh? Lead on, Dovoi."
Follow where he points.

Roll to search

I'll grimace a little. Pokemon's about more than just mechanical benefit…
"Lucas, don't let that powderpuff take you by surprise! Use Force Palm!" '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

"You're not getting away!"
Pokeball, go!

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Help me out here, eh? "

Roll #1 10 = 10

Damn – it missed. And he disappears into the deep blue sea.

Just as Lucas is about to close on Wigglytuff, he smirks and steps backward onto a different belt which catapults him around to the opposite side.

It's stunning how much damage he's doing – Lucas should have a resistance, but he's already breathing heavily.

"I love how you trainers come in here with all your presumptions. Let me guess… you're a Covalent City student who just finished learning how type advantage is the only thing you ever need to know, because once you have that, you've won. Well it's not true. You see, even though Return isn't very effective against Steel types, with enough item power, you can brute force a victory even in extreme conditions!"

How mysterious… a cave. There's a sign that warns:

Lost Dragon Cave
Highly Dangerous
Do NOT Enter

"Dang…that was a strange find though, huh?"

I retrieve my ball and pat Chopshop. "Well, you sure showed him. Thanks for saving both our bacon there, big guy."

Roll #1 6 = 6

"YESYESYES but wait, it says highly dangerous… but you're all fairies, dragons are your natural prey. Or are you all just scared without knowing what's really in it? Or could there be treasure? Should we go in Dovoi? Should we? Want to see how you take down a dragon?"

Ohboy oh boy

"Let me guess, X Attack? I thought those kind of items were meant to be applied during battle, not before."
I'll think a second.
"Unless you're talking about held items, like how a bent spoon sometimes boosts psychic type attacks?"
I'll shake my head.
"Anyway, I'm a Phlox trainer, which is how I'm familiar with Affection-based moves."

"Lucas, use Feint!" '1d10'

Roll #1 10 = 10

Dovoi shakes his "head".

He seems a little relieved and a lot wet.

Lucas finally seems to have got the gist of the belts and swings left – the strikes right!

It seems to slide right off that Fairy-typed flab, though.

Wigglytuff swings down then bounces up with great force, smashing Lucas's jaw and fainting him. It wasn't very effective.

Grimace a bit.
"Sorry Lucas…"
Call him back.
"Alright, Cinder, you're up! Latch onto that fluffy pink balloon and use Leech Life!" '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

"If even you're scared, I'll trust you… ooh, dragons… Want to see Ivan about it?"
Head back to shrine. Ask about this weird cave I found.

You ask around and learn that only Ivan knows.

Upon asking him, he just sighs. "You won't find any dragons there, only danger. There are collapsed bridges, cave-ins, and more. The whole place is heavily populated by Carbink, said to be drawn to it naturally. The name comes from a legend that at the very deepest part of the cave, a dragon once lived, perhaps driven out by the local fairies. Please promise me you'll never go down there without my guidance. And your Pokemon are still developing, to go in now would be a suicide mission."

His description does indeed match that gnarled maw. Normally a cavern such as that would be too dark to see a thing in, but the Carbink gave off a faint glow with their luminous gemstones. Even now, they patrol with purpose through the decaying halls which no doubt once housed a powerful dragon… Perhaps still do.

Roll perception.

Roll #1 1 = 1

You take everything at face value.

No point checking for more now then. Time to go.

Onward you go! What a pleasant road, this Fall Road.

I was rushing to help Kingsley.

"What, did that new Electric Mouse album corrupt my 'dex, because now isn't the time to tell me these Pokes only have one move!?"

I've got a good squad under my hands. Maybe I can take on Covalent now.

First, to Sapshire. Doo doo doo.

Right… so we're down Cinder, Lucas, and Lola's in rough shape…
Call Lucas back.
"Alright, let's see what you can do, Fish!"
And out comes Magikarp. His flopping around should keep him from getting dragged around by the conveyor belts too badly.

I bet he does. That was a feisty little fish. Well, let's go get everyone healed back up again.

Gengar collapses, unable to stand the unending assault of Pursuits from the pack of Honedge.

Roll traverse.

"Is this some kind of joke? Come on, I was starting to like you, kid!"

Do do dododo

I'll shrug.
"Well, I kinda wanted to see how he'd adapt to the belts, because using the arena's like using an item, only it's the field!"
I'll scratch the back of my head.
"And I sorta forgot to switch him out. But that doesn't mean I don't have faith in my pokemon! Fish, use Tackle!" '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Midnight you have to hold them off, just a little bit more "
Try to drag Kingsley and gengar away. "Come on guys.."

Hmm…while I'm here, I'll deposit Heinz and take out Jeeg.

"Sorry little guy. Can you chill out in there for a while? I think Jeeg deserves to exercise a little bit too. Does he even need to do that…?"

Roll #1 1 = 1

'2d10' one on each hand

Roll #1 8, 6 = 14

"Where'd you come from?! Nevermind, let's move out of here! Canvas, stay with us!"

"I'll explain once you are safe."

"Yeah, no prob!"

"Show him what we think of this mockery, Wigglytuff! Return!"

Fish uneasily flops from belt to belt as Wigglytuff leaps up and slams back down onto him, knocking him out.

Both of you roll 3d10.

The Honedge are in hot Pursuit – they specialize in taking out people trying to retreat!

Hm… it looks like the tunnel that leads to sapshire is barricaded. This is a narrow mountain range, though. Perhaps you could go for a little hike?

Well, I can't say that wasn't expected…
"Sorry, Fish…"
I'll call him back.
"Helia, you're up! Use Smog!" '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

Come on, skates. Help me get everyone out of danger. '3d10'

Roll #1 1, 4, 8 = 13

Jeeg floats about excitedly.

"Well hi there! You're a neat one. Wanna come with me and see what we can dig up?"

Can I sense anything from him, or is he too much like DC?

Roll #1 8 = 8

Roll #1 2, 7, 9 = 18

I suppose I can!

Put Phil in front. Hopefully he can evolve soon so he can do more than Take Down.

Wigglytuff goes into a fit of hacking coughs as Helia expels a wave of noxious fumes from her mouth.

"Many fumes! Handle it! Return!"

Helia held on… but she's not in good shape.

You're battered, abused, and slashed up as you retreat, running as hard as you can. You sprint ahead and leap to cross into the safety of the dark… and fall.

You splash into the thick, murky, dark water of the swamp in a large pool of water. Shhh! Stay quiet, and maybe they'll fly on overhead!

Okay, he's your first slot.

He makes odd sounds and floats on after you cheerfully. Really he has no expression but his singular eye.

'1d10' quiet like a deer

Roll #1 10 = 10

Grimace a little.
"You can do it, Helia! Just hold on a little longer! Use Smog!" '1d10'

Roll #1 4 = 4

So we hiking?
Maybe these mountains will have some exposed iron for him to snack on.

Please tell my I set my 'Dex to Airplane mode.

Roll #1 5 = 5

Like a deer? You're quiet like a rabbit! You wrap your calloused, nature-y rough-and-tough rural girl hands around Kingsley's dumb blabby city-trainer mouth to prevent him from making any dumb noises as he attempts to mumble something out.

The pack of Honedge float on oblivious to your presence.

Helia sends out another wave of haze. Nothing emerges… could it… could it be over?

Bam! Helia goes down!

Roll for encounters.

So much diversity!
"Well, let's go then."
Hmmm. Which direction was that big dig site in? Also, check moves on Jeeg.

Hopefully not something that resist a takedown.

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Mmph! Mph!"

"You did well, Helia! Come back!"
Man, Oswald's not going to enjoy this…
"Oswald, you're up! Use Yawn!"

File: 1398057156516.png (400.7 KB, 2418x998, routes.png)

Magnet Bomb, Thunder Wave, Thundershock, Tackle

There's a cliff face here. A tall oak is nearby, which you might be able to climb.

Wigglytuff looks drowzy.

"Finish the fight! Return!"

Oswald, clearly not ready for a fight, collapses, fainted.

"That leaves, what, one?"

"You can levitate up with me, right Phil?"

Let's climb up that cliff face. Maybe we can see the city from here.

>secret dragon cave not recorded on map

Well that's a long way west. Let's stop by the dock again first. Do any of the fishermen look like trainers?

"Yeah, afraid so."
I'll grip Lola's pokeball for a moment. Geez, losing sucks… and here I was thinking that the shrines were harder than early gyms. What did he even give that thing?
"Lola, you're back out! Have a potion."
And I'll use one of my potions on her.

If by trainers you mean "have Pokemon", yes, all of them.

Once I know they are clear I led him talk. "Whew… are you and your pokemon okay? What about gengar?"

Roll climb

"Ah, an item! I'll give you a little reprieve, then."

He gives his Wigglytuff a Full Heal, curing it of sleepiness and healing it entirely.

Well you never know, some of them might be doing something else!

Look for a challenge.

Roll #1 8 = 8

I-I can do it, right?

Roll #1 10 = 10

I'll clench my fist a bit.
But at least it wasn't a full restore.
"Lola, we've gotta end this quick! Use Quick Attack!" '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

"I'm alive, I'll count that as a win. But, what just happened?"

"The honedge are being forced to attack everyone on this road. We gotta help em!" I say hurriedly

"What's forcing them to attack everyone? Why?"

Offer her a hand to get out of the pool of water.

"The gengar showed me. Its a hooded figure, it has their mom chained down!"

It's hard to say which ones are really strong because they're fishing, not showing off battling. Still, you see one with another one of those dark fish, he might be a challenge.

Yep! No problem, you scale the mountain and you can see Sapshire from here. Interestingly, this mountain range extends up north and gets taller. In the distance, you can see a crumbling castle ruin that you never saw before, past a chasm where a road passes through deep into the woods. In the center of the woods, you see some sort of administrative center.

"That's enough – come back! Good job, Wigglytuff, but it's time for a more artificial Pokemon. You're in charge, Porygon!"

Is gengar okay? Did we bring it with?

"A what?"
Flip open the dex. What's it say about that thing?

"Alright, that sounds wicked uncool. Did you see any safe ways to get to the mom?'

I hope my 'Dex insurance covers water damage.

Yes, but he has fainted.

"Uh its up in a spooky mansion. But first we need to get gengar help!" Carry it and start heading to sapshire.

Let's go to that center. Maybe it's a Pokemon center? Kala should get some fresh air.

"Yeah, I owe the Poke my life. I'll help you."

Well, I like a challenge. Let's go up to him.

"Catch anything good today? Care to test them?"

It's a long, and spooky hike.

You feel the hairs standing up on the back of your necks.

There are no doubt loads of ghosts all around…

It's a contest pavilion. Looks abandoned right now.

"Hm, I'd need to visit the Pokemon Center, first. I've been out here a while."

Nod. "It was gengar that showed me you were in trouble and hurried me back too."

Nothing inside?

Maybe I can find some lost stuff to salvage. Explore… oh, wait, Dovoi out first. Seems like a place he could feel things about. Does he look nervous?

Hopefully this unconscious Ghost keeps them away as I focus on getting out of here.

"Remind me to thank him properly when we get back, Emily? Actually, how do you thank a Ghost?"

Well at least Midnight can see them keep the ghostly bug at my side as we walk. '1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

Virtual Pokemon
A man-made Pokémon that came about as a result of research. It is programmed with only basic motions.

"You must really lose track of time out here, huh?"

"I'm still working on communication with my own ghost so I can't tell you.. but I know it wants the honedge free."

The door is locked.

He seems indifferent.

You press on and arrive at the gates of Sapshire. It's still quite dark out at this time of night.

"Oh, it's a fine way to pass the time if you have the patience for it."

Weird. Let's see if Lola can actually hit it.
"Let's start off with a Hyper Fang, Lola! Be careful, since it might be quicker than it looks!" '1d10'

Roll #1 7 = 7

To the poke center!

"Yeah, I can see the appeal. But I don't think I could stay in one place for so long myself. I need more scenery."

Let's get this Ghost some help!

What, locked? Knock. Anyone in?

Send out Phil. Maybe he can feel something.

No response. It's clearly empty, though you perceive that it hasn't been abandoned long. It may have been even used earlier today, but it is closed for the night.

Lola struggles to get her mouth around Porygon's odd angles, and he just shrugs off the damage.

"Heh. Too bulky for you? Tri-Attack!"

What's that thing it's holding? Whatever it is, Lola gets smashed in, but manages to barely stay standing.

"Porygon may not be as impressive an attacker, but certainly makes up for it in toughness."

"The sea has scenery all its own, you know. The shifting of the waves. New ships coming into port. And the wonders concealed by the surface."

It's late, so this place is mostly empty. The nurse looks surprise.

"A ghost!"

If only I had Thief!
"Lola, you're doing great! Try to use the belts, and hit it with a Quick Attack!" '1d10'

Roll #1 10 = 10

Hmm. Anything of note? '1d10'
If not, let's keep going to Sapshire.

Roll #1 8 = 8

"Aaah! Where!?"

"Oh, wait, you're yelling about the Pokebro here, right? Just chill, he''s with us."

"Can you heal it? It saved us against a swarm!" I plead to her.

It looks like it's used for bug catching contests. Sapshire is roughly south of here.

You hike down and into town.

Lola dodges left, right and smashes into Porygon.

"Alright, now Recover!"

Porygon glows, and suddenly it's like your attack never even happened!

"Hm… I'll see what I can do. Help me get it on a cart."

She pushes out a cart.

"Come on buddy, up you go."

"Really? I've never really thought of it that way. But still…I think I've always preferred what I can see above the…sea."

Set the gengar on the cart. "You're gonna be okay ghost buddy.."

"Well, to each their own."

She wheels him into the back room. Looks like you'll have some time to talk while you wait.

Not much use for me, I already have a bug to raise.

First things first, heal, then swap out Dovoi for Kala. We're going to the gym, squad.

Oh that's just not fair.
"Lola, try another Quick Attack!" '1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

"Checkmate! Porygon, TRI ATTACK!"

With one last blast, Lola goes down.

"Care to fill me in on how you met Gengar in the first place?"

The center's lobby is empty save for Kingsley and Emily.

"Oh, hello, you two. Is something the matter?"

I've swapped out pokemon now, right?

"I guess so. Still up for that battle though?"

"Yeah, our Pokepal Gengar got hurt after we were attacked by Honedge. There's some weird stuff going out on the trails."

And that's that…
"Well, there goes that…"
I'll call Lola back.
"I'm going to have to make this up to all of you."

You can swap but not heal, due to the lack of a nurse.

"Alright, alright. Let me go to the center."

He struggles to his feet and lumbers off toward the center.

"That's the mentality!"

"I was walking down swamp road and a tree fell on me and then gengar showed up and pulled my ghost out of my body and showed me the mansion."

"It.. wouldn't happen to have been somewhere near Fogmire would it? Crazy stuff happens at this one house there."

Fortunately we're still at full HP.

"A lot! You may want to sit down for this explanation."

I'll frown a little.
"So what was your Porygon holding, anyway? I never got a good look at it."

I shrug and follow him.
"You ready to show off, Jeegers?"

"…its not a mansion is it?"

"sure I guess."

Prepare to hear them out.

Scoot a good distance away.

"You don't happen to have a hankering for human brains, now do you?"

"Oh, yes. A mansion on what they call Witch Hill. A Dusknoir almost spirited me away, then right after that a Driblim and horde of Drifloon tried to do the same. They knew my name, somehow."

Try not to shiver too hard

Roll #1 6 = 6

"Eviolite! A Pokemon that can still evolve becomes a lot tougher when holding it."

Do do dododo

Jeeg whistles… or something. You're not so sure.

Breath in deeply and try to tell you all at once.
"I was trying to go to the next city when I got lost and a tree fell on me. My pokemon were able to move it after a while but then gengar grabbed my spirit is ghost or something and flew off to the mansion and showed me the hooded figure ordering honedge around and their mom was chained to the floor. And the we saw Kingsley in trouble and hurried back to help."

It was a ruined castle.

"Not yet." Smirk "but I do hear city trainers are all brain"
"Do you know how to get in?"

"Wait. I am confused. Its a castle. Not a mansion."

I whistle back and pat him.
"Ready whenever you are."

"I see… What'd you give your Wigglytuff, by the way? I didn't see it holding anything, and you can only give it stat enhancing medicine during battles… unless it's something like an HP up or something."

"Wow, what?

"Oh, a castle? It's not where I went, then. No idea. Carry a Dark type, he might be a psychic or channeler. Wait, are you actually thinking of going in?"

"What did you two do to run into these things? I go around in skates and headphones and I agree that my clothes could probably be less bright, but still, how?"

"If they are hurting Pokemon, though, I'll help. No one should hurt Pokemon like that."

"I have to. Or the honedge will be enslaved forever and everyone will get hurt on swamp road." I pout a bit

"Chill, you got me and my pokepals. We won't let you go in alone, got it? You can count on us."

"Thanks Kingsley. I'm sure that's what gengar would want. "

Smile at you. "I'm glad I can count on you."

"Well, don't go without me! Incidentally, I hope you guys have spare Poke balls. Honedges are very, very interesting pokemon, and you two might want to catch one for yourselves."

I'm ready to go wherever.

"Hey, I have to set the example and pay back Gengar for that save."

"I got two on me, but speaking of the Honedge, here's a tidbit of info I scored when they were attacking me. All they have is Pursuit, no other moves on 'em that I could see after Canvas transformed into one."

"It wasn't holding – it was wearing!"

He deploys Wigglytuff and points at its headband.

"Choice Band. I thought your Lucario was wearing one, too."

The trainer returns. "An electric type, huh? Hold up a sec, before we start I want to switch out some Pokemon."

He hurries back into the center.

We should make sure all of our Poke's are healed before we move on, is the Nurse back?

Switch out Canvas for Pallet and see what he's found.

"What? That's weird. They have a lot of moves, wide variety, really. The guy must be making them want to chase things. Get your normal and dark types out."

The nurse is sill in the back room.

Pallet is holding Berry Juice presently.

"What.. how odd.. unnatural even.."

"Fighting and fairy types, too, since we're dealing with dark attacks."

Swap Phil for Dovoi back.

"The ball shop is still closed here I think and I haven't been able to get to the next town as you know now."

I shrug and turn back to the Magnemite.
"Sure is a lot of work for some fun, huh?"

I'll shake my head.
"No, it was a gift from some strange foreigner on his gift-giving holiday. It's what gave Lucas his odd coloration when he evolved, though beyond that I don't know what it does."
I'll shrug.
"Which is another reason I came to Vanilla."

"I trust my Pokehomies, I'm good to go."

"You're always looking out for us, aren't you Pallet? You're a true bro."

"I didn't even know they moved in such groups like that, at least this let's us know they won't heal or try something crazy on us."

He finally comes back out. "Okay, I think I'm ready!"

"Well, it's certainly the place to come to learn about items!"

Pallet waves his tentacles.

"I hope so. You've put more thought into this than any trainer I've met so far."

Shake my head "I'm sure its whatever the robed thing is making them attack like that."

"We go when we're ready. Let's exercise caution."

I'll roll my eyes a little.
"Yeah. Putting what you learn into practice seems to be a bit harder, though. At least on my end."

"Well, it's not often I get a Pokemon battle, is it? Everyone wants to battle construction workers or the shrine or something."

"Don't worry, to lose is only human – but learning is human too. That's what makes us the best. I have total faith in your potential – don't give up on your dreams! You can succeed! You're human."

"Didn't get a good look at it?"

"I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Let's head out."

I think I need to swap Rena with Willow.

"I planned to do that, but things change."
Anyway, go Magnemite!

"I was a ghost and didn't have my dex, and they faced away from me."

"Just about ready."

Sleepy pig it is!

"Alright, you've got this, Quagsire!"

"Yeah, well, I'm not the one out there fighting. And if you'll excuse me, I've got to get these guys healed up after that beating they just got…"
I'll start to head towards the exit.

It's like I actually have friends

"Let's go!" I say enthusiastically.

I'll pop the marching music on my headphones as we walk out.

You head out into the dark…

"Good luck out there!"

You head to the Pokemon center
