 No.459[Last 50 Posts]

First off, I know that there is a perfectly good Dwarf Fortress thread on this board already, which has a number of helpful guides and info graphs posted. But that's not why I'm making this thread, its not a general thread. As always the hiatus is long and MLPG is upset, so I'd thought I'd try and organize a complicated and lengthy vidya project for us to get collectively frustrated over. You know, for fun!

>What is this exactly?

This is a succession/bloodline game of Dwarf Fortress. Chances are if you've heard of Dwarf Fortress, you've heard about the infamous legend of Boatmurdered, a succession game that was done on the Something Awful forums once upon a time. I want to organize a game like that for here.

>What is a succession/bloodline game?

Essentially it works like this: One of us starts a new game in fortress mode and play the game as we see fit. We continue this way until a set amount of time (in this case one in game year, or when Spring Has Arrived!). Once that happens we drop everything no matter what, save and quit, take the save game file and send it to the next person. We continue like this until the fort is inevitably destroyed or until this whole thing just falls apart or gets no interest. Which ever.

As we do, we take various screen shots of notable events or people or projects or simply things you want to point out and post them here with your commentary. You can be humorous or serious or do it in a journal style, however. Just be engaging and have fun.

>What do I do if I want to participate?

The game is open for all of MLPG. Simply post here expressing your want to be in this and I'll put you on the list. However keep in mind that this thing is going to be screwy on its own, so if you are completely new to Dwarf Fortress this is not exactly the best way for you to start learn.

Oh and for simplicity's sake, post with a name. More then one anon will just get confusing.

>What you will I need?

If you don't already, you'll want to download the latest version of Dwarf Fortress (0.34.11). Compatibility will be key here so everyone will need the same version. Besides that you'll need to know how take screen shots of your game and also how to pretty them up in a separate program, if you want to do that. Dwarf Therapist is also recommended, but not strictly needed.

>How will we be sending/receiving each other our save files?

We'll work that out based on what's easiest for everyone, probably being either email or drop box or some other easy free file sharing application.

>How long will I have to play/post my stuff/until I need to end my turn and send my save?

We'll work that out once I get an idea of how many people/how much enthusiasm there is for this. At the moment I'm thinking giving everyone about a one week deadline, but that's subject to change, especially as things progress or there's issues. We'll see.

>Why aren't we using the pony mod?

I'm well aware there is a My Little Pony mod for Dwarf Fortress, but I'm avoiding it here. Why? One, seeing as this game involves importing and exporting save files, the last thing we need is some compatibility issue cropping up that no one can figure out because of using other party add-on's. And two…..we'll I just plain don't like it. I like the show and everything, but not everything needs some pony gimmick. And it doesn't really make a lot of sense for ponies to be living inside a mined out mountain anyway.

>Can I at least name the dwarfs?

Yes, and you are encouraged to do so. Just don't rename any dwarfs that a previous player has already named.

>When will sign up be open?

I'm keeping a tentative deadline set for 5th of May, a little over a week from now, though this is subject to change.

>I have other questions!

By all means if anyone has any additional questions, comments or simply want to call me names this thread is for that and I'll get around to answering them within a day or two.

>tl;dr

Want to play MLPG Boatmurdered? Post here.

 No.463

I'd play the fuck out of this.

 No.464

>>463
Thats one

 No.465

>>464
We could start after getting 1-2 more people and hope the stories draw in more players.

Or play 2 years/leader until we get more people.

 No.466

>>465
Yeah, we'll see how things turn out. Still, I'm going to keep it open for as long as I said I would

 No.469

>>466
That's a bit long of a time, but okay.

I could start up a normal fort now and post logs of it to draw some attention, shall I?

If you want, I could even make a megaproject or something to spice it up.

 No.480

>>469
No need to do anything just yet. Even if were were to start today this thing will still take a while to come about. That's sort of the point.

May 5th is the deadline even if no one else shows up

 No.490

And once again the sub has surfaced. Now that the technical complications are out of the way, lets move on to the technical complications.

Papa Nurgle, as the only person (aside from the other guy on the temp site who's name escapes me but is still welcome to join if he chimes in) here, what would be easiest for you in terms of sending/receiving save files? We can try email, though I doubt the data limits will be tolerable, or we can try Dropbox, which I hardly have a grasp on but will learn if need be.

Also is one full week a good set time for you to run your turn? You can post all your stuff then or when the next person is playing.

And speakign of posting the stuff, I've accumulated some of my own already and ready to start posting, though I'm not all done yet. I'm going to start posting them in this thread soon-ish, but feel free to continue discussion or meta talk.

 No.491

>>490
Dropbox is fine by me.

Honestly, I could do my turn in an hour if it went smoothly, but I'd like to take more time. A week's a bit much for one whole year, but several days would be great in case of delays.

 No.492

>>491
Ok lets make it three days then. Sound good? A good turn over is nice, but I dont want anyone to feel rushed

Also I'll start posting my run tonight and continue to do so in sporadic updates as I go through my year.

+–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-+

Despite several years of minding their own business and trying to keep things in one mountain home, a group of dwarfs are forcible ejected from their ancestral places of origin by the king and shunned into the dangerous, unforgiving wilderness. Though they did nothing wrong themselves, their complaints fall on death ears and they are forced to make do as best they can under the circumstances.

Hopefully somewhere out there in the grand Dimension of Griffons there is a place to pick up the pieces and thrive once again.

 No.499

Oh sorry, correction. They parked the wagon full of all their supplies on the steep slopes of the VOLCANO. My bad.

 No.500

File: 1368157545248.png (55.87 KB, 1091x667, Plans.png)

Though to be fair, this spot has potential. The slop crops out in an interesting little peninsula, which could be extremely defendable with some improvements. Take out the slopes, put up some walls, ad a draw bridge. This isn't a bad spot at all.

 No.501

File: 1368157965487.png (66.8 KB, 1093x667, River.png)

The head of a brook is just south of here, giving easy access to fresh water and fish. And with plentiful trees in every direction, this place has all the trappings to be a good healthy fort.

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

 No.502

File: 1368158213254.png (52.53 KB, 1089x661, Strike the earth.png)

So without further ado, lets get started. The first stairs are are marked for digging. Spike gets ready.

 No.503

File: 1368158531161.png (34.47 KB, 1093x661, Dig.png)

The plans show the initial entrance will run just under the surface, but then loop back up to level inside the mountain….err, volcano. The entire thing is large enough to house a vast population once set up properly. And this way there shouldn't be too many super long stair cases to stumble down. At least not yet.

 No.504

File: 1368158954155.png (6.52 KB, 1091x657, Warehouse.png)

But before we get that far, there's the more pressing concern of getting all of the supplies stashed away indoors. This are is mostly calm as of now, but that doesn't mean a raving horde of angry badgers wont just come waltzing across the map and eat all the food. A moderately sized warehouse just inside the entrance should suffice, not to mention keep Spike busy for a while. And once the fort is better organized and supplied better distributed, this room can become a barracks or something.

 No.505

File: 1368159347092.png (46 KB, 703x583, Wood.png)

And speaking of keeping busy, a lot of wood will be needed in the days to come, so Fluttershy is put to work. Who else is better qualified to wield a large heavy axe to deforest the immediate area?

 No.506

File: 1368159748344.png (4.52 KB, 798x134, 2cat.png)

Of course the group didn't come here alone. Along for the ride came some dogs, cats and a [air of stallions as work animals.

Which give the circumstances is odd for a number of reasons….

 No.507

File: 1368160186484.png (407.43 KB, 767x514, Kakapo.png)

The heck is a kakapo?

 No.508

File: 1368160467558.png (10.23 KB, 1089x667, Stuff.png)

Spike finishes the room in no time, digging up a number of milk quartz gems along the way to boot! They, along with the supplies, are brought in for safe keeping as the young dragon continues to dig.

 No.509

File: 1368160785491.png (80.13 KB, 1339x647, Gems.png)

Rarity gets to work turning the rough stones in to sparkling works of art to later be sold at a criminally high price. Winter is coming and some trade will make the first year easier for the small fort.

 No.510

File: 1368161066141.png (25.92 KB, 789x667, Farm.png)

Just beyond the were house dump the hall returns to surface level inside the mountain, just below where the wagon is. Since this are appears to be mostly sand and soil, its the perfect spot for an extensive farm that will feed many.

 No.511

File: 1368161265398.png (1.77 KB, 221x82, Food.png)

In a matter of moments, the foods stores are full again….at least as far as meat is concerned.

One wonders how this situation played out. Did she tempt him over to the copping block with promises of candy and fun games? Did a whole musical number play out with the final note the sound of a cleaver coming down? Did the others just watch things unfold?

Maybe its best not to dwell on such things.

 No.517

File: 1368162602296.png (39.41 KB, 1083x657, Done.png)

Luckily Spike makes short work of the farm, so there's no need for a repeat performance just yet. Fluttershy gets right to work laying down furrows and….wait, why is Fluttershy doing this? Between the tree chopping and the farming, something must have gotten mixed up somewhere.

Whatever. Seeds are put down none the less and soon fresh produce will be the order of the day.

 No.518

File: 1368162934338.png (36.49 KB, 851x359, Craft.png)

Rarity, despite having cut all the gems in all sorts of ways, has nothing to show for it as they're just sitting in their bins, unused. That's hardly what they're worth, so she gets to work making some crafts to garnish up. In loo of any kind of clothing or textiles, wood will have to, as this has more then enough of it.

The plan is simple.

MT and Spike will carve out some rooms here to be used for forges and smelters, taking in power from a simple channel of magma tubes dug underneath them. Thus the fort has free fuel and wonderful metal goods can be made quickly and easily….once we find some usable metal ore, that is. This may seem very dangerous, but its all very run of the mill. Or forge, in this case.

Still, the last thing we need is him rising from the ground and scaring everyone out of their pants, so its time to start construction on a catacomb for the dead. MT is the only miner left, so it may take a while.

Rarity was literally the only one doing anything in terms of making trade goods and it was less then impressive for the merchants. A few large gems and pine armlets could only get a few bars, a peahen, some seeds and a smattering of food. Hardly a huge haul, but its more then there was.

Despite the close proximity to an active volcano, the near by brook, the only local course of fresh drinking water, freezes over. Luckily the fort is well stocked with a ready surplus of alcohol for everyone to survive off of.

This actually is a good opportunity to dig an under ground aqueduct to lead into the fort. This way Dash and the others can fish safely in the protection of the stone walls of home, the fish can get to the kitchen faster and a well can be build for a place for everyone to wash themselves or drink water if, goodness forbid, there's ever a shortage on booze. And with the water way frozen, MT can mine out the entire thing without risk of flooding and drowning.

If she's quick enough to finish before the thaw, that is.

No one is bothered by this in the slightest. Everyone is upset at the snow then over what happened to Spike.

Things are going rather well (aside from the earlier magma thing). It might be a good time to start shoring up some defenses and a standing military. But first we'll need to decide on a commander for the militia.

But who is best suited to lead others into battle, to inspire those around them with valor and fight against the likes of goblins, ogres and worse?

Goodness, has it been a year already?

As the last of the winter frost melts away and gives way to the warmth of a new year, the fort Waywardrelic sits defiantly established in the shadow of grumbling volcano The Robust Cinder. One of their number has been lost and will surely not be the last. But through the starting hardships and tragedies, small victories were had. A small incursion of thieves foreshadows future challenges that will present themselves in time. Only time will tell if the fort has the metal to survive.

+–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-+

So that's my year. I hope anyone who has been following along has been enjoying things so far.

I am going to do a few quick screen caps of the fort as it exists and help illustrate some of the things for those watching at home. Then I will try and figure out Dropbox and pass things along.

The current list of players, in order, is:

>Scrubbing Bubbles (ME)

>Nurgle (Next)
>Seika

Its not to late for anyone to sign up if they want to join in. Nurgle, I'll be getting to you soon enough once I get things in order. I will most likely have a very busy weekend and will try to get everything ready as soon as I am able.

1 - The main hall
2 - The kitchens and breweries
3 - barrels, for brewing
4 - finished food and alcohol stockpile
5 - raw food stockpiles, below ground
6 - pasture for animals, outside
7 - the barracks where soldiers train
8 - the armory, below ground
9 - sleeping quarters, currently without any beds
10 - future site for a well
11 - fisheries

 No.686

File: 1369515131601.png (26.08 KB, 1082x662, magma.png)

Following the main hall north we approach the molten center of the active volcano. Here a number of areas have been set up for smelters and forges, though they havent been constructed yet. A stockpile room is also being set up for the raw materials.

The lone stare way just south of the forges leads up to the peak of the mountain.

 No.687

File: 1369515333222.png (29.18 KB, 683x645, peak.png)

The stairs lead up to a single small room, which is used as a memorial hall for Spike. It is level with the top of the volcano, a good 6 levels up from the rest of the fort.

 No.688

File: 1369515482845.png (43.34 KB, 993x562, topside.png)

One level above the main fort is the entrance area, which includes the dump and a shanty town of various workshops.

 No.689

File: 1369515820763.png (16.49 KB, 1073x658, under.png)

And finally, one level under the main fort areas, are a number of conveniently placed stockpiles for the above areas, the main entrance/warehouse and a underground water way dug to receive water from the near by brook.

 No.690

File: 1369516362508.png (19.64 KB, 1073x658, under+.png)

1 - the stairs leading to the entrance topside at level 1

2- the stairs leading to the fort in level 0

3 - The bulk stockpile warehouse that houses everything until dedicated stockpiles can be set up

4 - raw plants for the kitchen and brewing above

5 - raw meats

6 - the armory for the barracks just above

7 - the underside of where the well will go

8 - the channeled area for where fishing can be done.

And that's everything! I am officially done for now and moving things over for Nurgle. I'm still figuring out Dropbox, but if I did things correctly I do believe this link will give you the copy of the save file. It should be a simple matter of replacing your game's save folder with this one. I would recommend making a copy, just in case.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1722zla0womh3jp/Bjkx_4G018

I'm giving you a week to get your turn done, though if you finish sooner or need more time it shouldn't be a problem.

Have fun!

Oh and one more thing. You're all probably interested in who's with who, so I made this handy dandy little shipping chart instead of posting a whole bunch more relationship screens.

The follow couples are married:

MT x MoronSonOfBoron

Glitter Glue x Marker (They have a child together, Archive)

ArtAnon x Anonymous

Leth x Nathan

FacelessJR x fallenPineapple

Both LK and Tex also have respective spouses, but they don't live in the fort.

Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash are lovers, as well as are Twilight and Fluttershy.

Everyone else lives lonely pathetic lives.

>Waywardrelic Overseer's Log, 12th Granite, 659

Ah, what wonders! The mountainhome's given me control of a small fortress outpost, whose previous overseer seems to have resigned.

The first things I noticed were the average signs of a young fort; lack of a well, lack of metalworks, lack of food, lack of nobles…

Those have all been righted. Well, maybe not the food one, since we can't be sure until our new bookkeeper gives us how much we really have.

Early on, I found Art-Anon ignoring his furnace operating duties in favor of fishing; Fishing in the empty swamps.

Beyond that, I ordered Craftsdwarf Rarity to construct food and drink storage in the form of rock pots; the concept of making something so simple and bland seemed to upset her, but I do hope she'll get it done.

I've tidied up the fort much. Built a new crafts area, put migrants to work, and all that.

Summer's gone past quickly.

The season started with a fishery worker going into a blind, screaming fury, producing an odd, but quite well made amulet.

Our first mayor was elected, and he was given quarters. He doesn't like us getting rid of medical supplies.

More immigrants showed up, as always.

An exploratory shaft, looking for ore, has uncovered a massive cavern deep in the earth. I'll have to send some miners and soldiers to give it a closer look.

Moron, Son of Boron, vanished one night, slain in the dining room, of all places! His blood was all missing, too. The priests suggest that we've a cursed dwarf among the populace.

Finally, a human caravan has appeared, and we've given them all of the gnomeblight we 'acquired' from the Elves. Hope they deal with that gnome problem.

A filthy GOBLIN abducted a moody child who decided to work outside, so I have put a militia patrol in place to prevent future incidents.

The dwarven caravan came as expected, and we've given them a good trade for metal and food.

The vampire who killed Moron was caught trying to drain another poor citizen, and was entombed for it.

Spores from the deep caverns have come up and taken root in the farm area- Won't be hard to deal with, but perhaps some tower-caps in unused space wouldn't be so bad…
