The party returns to Celestia. Battered and burnt, but victorious.
They present the sun princess and her advisers evidence of the cult and their work within the inner workings of Canterlot.
You also hand over the Binding Seal spell, asking that copied of it be made just to be sure.

Celestia looks over the evidence and seems to become very serious. She opens a door nearby and says you may take anything you wish from the royal guard armory.
She then summons a healer by the name of Aenoi to tend to your wounded.
Once you are ready, speak with her again. She has news to tell.

Celestia waits in the other room. Her aside there is also a young female dragon. She introduces herself as Noise.
Her tribe, on the run from Old Ironhide, had a run in with the Griffon Kingdom of the north, and lost five of their original 20 members before coming to an agreement and being allowed to roost in an empty town.
She herself came to Canterlot to offer her services as a translator and ambassador between dragons and ponies. She has knowledge of Ironhide and wishes to do all she can to help defeat him once and for all.
Celestia has accepted her offer, having met Ironhide in person in the past, she knows they will need all the allies they can get.
Noise says there is a large dragon tribe nearby they could try to ally with, or now that she is in Canterlot, you could join her in finding some proper answers to the true nature of Ironhide.
She also offers to tell you the story of Ironhide as she knows it, if you care to listen.

Old Ironhide made a name for himself four hundred years ago during those dragon migrations. He was massive even compared to other dragons, and had great iron plates hammered to his skin and scales. Most dragons suspected he had paid some other race to build them onto him, but there was no proof. What fueled Ironhide's rage was a mystery, but he blindly attacked any dragon that got in his way, openly destroying any eggs he could find. The iron plates and countless fights had left him so disfigured that none could be sure what he once looked like. Perhaps he was a dragon someone once knew. Perhaps he was a loner or an outsider. Whatever his past was, it had to be traumatic. What else would drive a dragon to so blindly slay his own kind? His fury scattered the tribes, forcing them outwards from their traditional roosting grounds in search of safety. Matings failed and eggs were lost, causing a severe dip in dragon population. There were also many clashes between dragons and other races, as the dragons sought roosts, just like now.

All seemed lost until Celestia the princess of Equestria stepped forth to stop the madness before her capital of Canterlot would come under attack.
Gathering countless unicorns, some of them famous and notable, as well as shamans and warriors, she made a pact with the dragons. Learning the deepest secrets and weaknesses of a dragon first hand, she guided her unicorns in creating a spell that could weaken the mighty Ironhide.
The other dragon clans united to face Ironhide in battle, and through many died that day, the combined armies of dragons and ponies managed to bring down Ironhide.
However, he was too strong to finish off that day, with every army in rags, the unicorns instead sealed him in a mighty stone prison, sealing him there forever with shrines that sustained their weakening spell. Now the shrines have been broken and Ironhide has returned, still consumed with rage against the dragons, and now with a similar hatred of ponies, especially the unicorns and Celestia.
At least, that is the story as it was told to her.

She asks if you'd rather go to the archives for research, or meet the dragons as is?

Noise listens to you and ponders for a while.
She then quickly dashes into the history wing and scours the shelves for info about the first arrival of Ironhide.
She asks you to help her find a record of knights serving in the royal guard at the time.
There is a story among dragons, a fairly old one that most just consider a story among a million others. It tells of a pony knight who once was seen as a notable threat by dragons. Though small and unremarkable, his faith in his duty brought him great strength. He wandered the lands near Canterlot, attacking any dragons he found. He even killed a few younger ones.
She wants to know if this knight was real, for if the stories are to be believed he lived not long before Ironhide appeared.

After some messing around you do indeed find a record of knights who served four hundred years ago. As you go through the list, Celestia walks into the room
>>1893170
Celestia is sort of creeped out by your drooling, and pulls her hoof away.
She then proceeds to talk.
That story indeed is fact, and she knew that knight. His name was Valiance and he was something of a rogue element. As a guard, it was his duty to protect Canterlot. However he always prioritized the greatest threats as the ones most demanding of attention. While this was a good mindset, it lead to him hunting dragons for over ten years, believing they were by far the greatest potential threat to the castle.
His methods were often overblown and unpredictable, endangering his fellow guards and civilians for what he called the greater good end. Eventually Celestia had to eject him from the guard. This did not stop him, however, and he continued his crusade in private, swearing to protect his princess.
Eventually he disappeared, and was assumed dead around six months before the appearance of Ironhide. He was last seen heading into the mountains. She is not sure what he was looking for there, since nobody really visits that place often.

She says she did not expect much of this migration, and for a while feared for her life, but now she has seen new hope and believes the experiences she has had have made her stronger.
>>1893580
The book says dragons are big, and suggests smiting with big things. If possible, attempt dropping boulders. Possibly boulders inscribed with prayer.
Noise remarks that Celestia was very understanding and kind, yet gave off an air of power she never expected from a pony.
>>1893588
Noise does not know how many dragons ended up in this splinter, but for reference she was a part of a splinter of 20 of various ages. In general, the older, larger dragons are the ones to keep an eye on. Them, or the most vocal ones.
She further tells that she has never liked the idea of mating that much, and has often wishes she would never grow up to be as monstrous as most dragons do.
>>1893592
Dragons who roost in Equestria rarely pay mind to migrating ones. Sometimes they join in to seek potential mates, but mostly they prefer to sleep in peace.

You approach the center of the roost as a tight group, looking cautious.
One of the dragons, likely the eldest by Noise's judgement, rises up to greet you. Noise says you've come at a bad time. There has recently been a major internal argument among the splinter tribe, leading to it breaking down even further as half of the dragons headed northwards to seek safer grounds further away from Ironhide.
Those who stayed are now weighing their options.
If you have something to offer, do so, but otherwise leave them be. They have enough trouble as it is.

Noise further explains that small groups tend to make mating hard, leading to little offspring. Uniting them with another splinter might be a good plan, or alternatively they could be convinced to join the war effort as their mating is already likely a failure.

What do you do?

While most of it is just fancy baubles, there is a Dragonheart Gem among them. Many dragons like to eat gems but these are usually left uneaten, as they pulse softly when near dragons. The pulse grows with every dragon nearby, so sometimes they are used during migrations to find other groups.

Noise knows that there is her old splinter back in the Griffon Kingdom to the northeast, and the group that split off from this splinter that was heading north.
She could offer these dragons the gem and some directions, possibly in exchange for a ride to the mountains and promises of future assistance.

Noise knows the griffon kingdom splinter should be about 16 dragons strong, but the King needs to be informed so that he won't attack the dragons thinking they are there to take more roosting space by force. Noise listens and nods, remarking that if infighting was the reason the group broke off, you may need to deal with what or whoever the problem was.

You have arrived upon the mountain. The gem is pulsing harder, indicating there are more dragons here.
The scenery is rugged and dark. Jagged rock formations line the cliffs and an eery dark mist floats near the ground. Although it is day, it might as well be midnight here.
There are some paths leading towards a plateau, another that seems to head higher, possibly to a peak, and a lower path that enters some caves on a cliffside.
Noise chimes in saying that any of these might be a potential temporary roost, and that splitting up in such terrain would be suicidal.

Where do you go?

You head out to the path. It soon begins leading sharply upwards, and the dark mist gets thicker as you go further up.
Fang-like rocks jut from the cliffs above, and dark clouds further mess with visibility. Luckily Radiant's torch provides ample light to see where you are going.

As you reach the end of the path, you come to a summit you never saw from below. It is black as night and nothing grows there. Some scattered stones indicate there once may have been a building here.
You can make out a vague shape in the darkness. It does not move.

You pick up Valiance's blade and turn to Noise.
She says she has only heard vague legends of this Tirek, but the heart seems to radiate some sort of malignant energy. It might be possible to peer into it to see some truth to the events than unfolded here.
She will need the party to help shield her from the darkness, as she fears that there might still be unexpected power left in this altar.

Gaze into the heart of darkness?

Your party stands ready, placing a ward on the altar and a protective aura upon Noise.
She steps before the heart and looks deep into it.
As the visions flood her mind, she does her best to narrate the unfolding events.

Valiance, knowing he could never save his princess and homeland alone and without aid, sought to find power that would let him face the dragons and end them once and for all. He swore he would make any sacrifice and suffer any fate so long as he could perform his service.
He soon began having dreams. Dreams of an altar shrouded in eternal midnight. He was drawn to find this place. He wanted to know why it called him, and what it's purpose was.

Suddenly, Noise recoils a bit from the heart. She says she felt it gaze back at her. She is not sure if she should continue, but wants to know what the truth behind Valiance is.

What do you advise her to do?

Noise gazes back into the heart

Valiance sought out this place and climbed the long forgotten path. He fought twisted monsters and suffered great wounds, but pressed on. At the summit he found a temple dedicated to Tirek, the Lord of Midnight. having suffered greatly, he dropped his chipped and dulled blade, and pleaded to the dark one to reveal why he was called.
He was granted a vision, in which he cut down hundreds of dragons with ease, destroyed their nests and slaughtered their young. He was saving all of equestria.
With this vision burned to his mind, he grasped the beating heart of darkness and embraced his destiny. His wounds knit shut into gruesome scars and he began swelling into a massive size. Dark flames engulfed him and melted his armour, fusing it with his flesh and he was twisted into a colossal dragon.
Enraged by this twist of fate, Valiance smashed the temple from within, but could not harm the altar as it stood there, seemingly mocking him. He then-

Radiant charges in, swinging the Hammer of the Sun in a mighty arc. It lands a heavy blow on the dragon's shoulder, just missing his head. It shatters scale and bone, leaving one arm crippled. Before she can ready another strike though, the dragon spins with an agility that belies his size, striking Radiant from below with his spiky tail. The blow is heavy and leaves her winded, but the Sun Plate protected her vitals. It was just like Celestia herself guarding your heart~

If someone doesn't mind running back five or so horses to check, we can't be sure.
I think I started at around 19:00, and it's 8:40 now

The rest of the party lines up after some pushing and shoving, then heads deeper. The cave soon begins to widen up and you notice archways carved into the ceiling. Perhaps more curiously the path seems to slowly be forming into stairs.

The sands stir up again. You are in the air, flying. Below you can see hundreds of horrible monsters fleeing terror as you approach. You strike at them with your mighty blade and it effortlessly cleaves them apart. You blast forth the rays of the sun granted to you by the blessings of Celestia and rejoice as the foul beasts are burned to cinders. As they run they scream obscenities and mockery to your perfect god, which only serves to fuel your will to slay them.
In the distance you can see the sun rising. Celestia has come to thank you in person no doubt. She flies from Canterlot herself to grant you her praise. You hurry to meet her. Surely she will be overjoyed to see all the good you have done.

The vision ends as you pull away from the hourglass. You are not sure how, but this trinket seems to have stored some of the final moments of Valiance's life in it as he saw them.
