It is a grim time indeed for the Griffon Kingdoms. The Dragon Migrations are underway, and while usually very few dragons travel this far north to breed, things are very different this time.
Not long ago a spell set in motion four centuries ago was broken, releasing Old Ironhide, a colossal evil dragon from his subterranean imprisonment. The dragon is now wreaking havoc among the migrations, killing other dragons and scattering many others way out of their path.
The king's court has ordered a state of emergency, and begrudgingly sent a call of aid to Equestria. Griffons are proud and strong creatures, but there is little they can do against the dozens of dragons now invading their realm.

Among your group are some of those who were sent by Celestia to help find a solution. She herself cannot go, nor spare many resources, as it seems Ironhide is carving his path of destruction directly towards Canterlot itself. As such, there is little fear that the epicenter of destruction would be anywhere near these mountains. However even the smaller ripples made by the splash that is Ironhide can be felt hard.

Your mission is to devise a plan on how to defend key Griffon cities from the roosting dragons any way possible, be it negotiation or force.

You stand in the hall of the capital castle, where the military leaders, head engineers and important diplomats gather.

What is your plan of action, and who do you go talk to first?
>> Pointy [Warrior] 05/12/12(Sat)11:53 No.1885657

The party checks their bags, only to realize they know what they bright along because they packed it themselves.
They then pack up to head to the Engineers' quarters.
The mage however insists that the diplomats are more important, as they need to know what the overall situation is before they act.

Majority vote to go to the engineers?
Listen to the mage after all?
Leader decides?

We need to be more specific than that. Everyone's going to have different ides on what to do, and we should see exactly what plans they have

We'll be able to ask more from the engineers if we know more about the situation, we're also going to have to tread lightly as outsiders
>> Puli [Shaman] 05/12/12(Sat)12:07 No.1885823

>> DM 05/12/12(Sat)12:08 No.1885841
After some further discussion, the party agrees to meet up with the engineers before talking to the diplomats.

The engineering bay is impressive, but one can easily see it was hastily constructed. The walls are lined with pulleys and there are craftsmen and eggheads flying around tweaking things and talking.

Of note is a large table near the back, covered in blueprints, and what seems to be the skeleton of a ship suspended from the high ceiling.
The head engineers, an old griffon with large goggles, a unicorn from Canterlot and an earth pony with a thick mustache are arguing over the plans. A fourth, larger figure is also present, but remains silent.
There are also many other things being built and tested around the area.

Go see what the trio is arguing about?
Check out some of the stuff being tested?
>> Birdy [Paladin] 05/12/12(Sat)12:09 No.1885849
I'll check out what's being tested right now

I want to check out what's getting tested.
>> Pointy [Warrior] 05/12/12(Sat)12:10 No.1885856
I'll go to the table.
The Mage and the Tracker can go back to the diplomats if they want to.
The rest can do what they want, though if you get a chance, I'd like a crossbow or a flintlock

Damn, I knew that I shouldn't have rolled that fattie before we started.
>> DM 05/12/12(Sat)12:18 No.1885957
As the engineer see this duo approach they greet Birdy with a salute. They've always admired those who take the path of the paladin, and ask if you would like to test the newest weapon they have, derived from a mysterious spice the king is places much hope in.

Learn more?
Just try it right away?
As you approach the table, Sheffield trips over his clothes and slams into the table, messing up the order of some papers.
Puli comes in to try and calm down the visibly angered engineers, and even though he doesn't make much sense, he doesn't make the situation any worse either.
The engineers settle down after giving you a quick glance and return to talking.

Listen to them?
Talk to them?
Try to make out who the fourth one is?
>> Pointy [Warrior] 05/12/12(Sat)12:19 No.1885970
I'll talk to them (rolling?)

The griffon engineers begin to explain.
It is a tube with a pouch of Black Spice at the back, and a metal ball in front of it. When the spice is ignited, like one would light a pipe, it explodes, sending the ball flying at high speeds.
They call it the Firepipe.
They offer it to you and point at a target painted on a bag of feathers a few yards away.
Try it?
The engineers get mad at you for interrupting and tell you to be quiet or go away.
They seem to have forgiven the mage though, and pay no mind as he sits down among them.
You go check out the fourth one. He is sitting further back and is wearing a big hat. He also has a big barrel with him. Upon closer inspection he turns out to be a white bear with some large black markings and lightly burned paws.
He looks at you with a neutral expression.
However he doesn't even react to Puli's chatting. Possibly because as a bear he can't speak.

Ask someone about the bear?

The exploding pouch almost knocks the Firepipe out of your hand. after you flap away the smoke you see the ball left a notable hole in the sack.
The engineer then excitedly tells you the spice comes from a far away land and is very expensive, but they hope they can utilize it to fight the dragons.
The head engineers each take a long draw from the pipe and lighten up a little.
They tell you bear is an ambassador summoned by the king. He comes from a far away land to bring a sample of a mysterious Black Spice they use to season meals. When treated the right way, it explodes violently. The king is sure this is the best weapon they have against the dragons, and is betting a lot on an alliance with the spice bears. Initial tests have proven the power of the power of the spice, but they only have a few barrels of it for now. Not nearly enough.

The weapons have gone over several versions, from small ones that fit nicely into a claw, to big ones that need several griffons to carry.
The next step is to build one so large it can kill a dragon with a single hit. However it will be too large to carry anywhere, which is why they need to mount it on something.
The earth pony engineer butts in - he has built ships his entire life, and was tasked with building the Griffon's Howl - a ship capable of mounting the dragonkiller cannon.
However he has no idea how to get it airborne, which is what the unicorn is here to help with. He has ideas including balloons, engine powered propellers and if all else fails, lots and lots of griffons and pegasi lifting it with ropes.
Their main concerns are their low supply of Black Spice, and the fact that without a dragon, alive or dead, to test the weapons on, results are just guesstimation.

Ask about the feasibility of an engine powered by lightning.

Also ask about the effectiveness of the weapons in large numbers, in the limbheld form. We don't really need to kill the dragon in one hit, piercing their wings enough to drag them to the ground should be enough for killing them with more conventional methods, should it come to that.
>> Puli [Shaman] 05/12/12(Sat)12:51 No.1886383
Balloons are out of the question.

The party splits up
You head out to the military leaders. They all seem to be griffons. This does not surprise you.
There are maybe 20 guards posted around the meeting room, and a large map covers the central table. A large black mark is drawn on it, starting in the eastern mountains and cutting across Equestria towards Canterlot. Smaller lines diverge from it, pointing to various surrounding areas.
You know the griffon at the end of the table is the general. The others you are not so sure of.
How do you proceed?
The head diplomat greets your group. He asks you to step it. They are gathered in a large meeting room with dozens of seats lining the walls in many rows. You can make out some notable pony diplomats among the griffon ones, and remarkably, a young dragon.
What is your first order of business?

The general gives you a once-over and rolls his eyes. He then points at some empty seats and waits for you to sit down.

The situation is as follows - with Ironhide on the loose, the dragon migrations have scattered. Most suitable roosting spots in these mountains are taken up by Griffon cities, so in order to nest here, the dragons would need to tare some down. This cannot be accepted or allowed. They must either be redirected elsewhere, driven back to their usual grounds, or killed outright. However this is a thread beyond the scope of the griffon military. They do not like outside help, but this is as special as a case gets.
Canterlot has refused military aid, but Cloudsdale offers to honour an old alliance and send aid if called upon. These combined fores would probably be enough to drive back the majority of the dragons, but only with horrible losses.
Two alternatives exist - a diplomatic solution with the dragons, or a deal with the Spice Bears.
Whatever they choose, they still need a battle plan incase things go south.
>> Puli [Shaman] 05/12/12(Sat)13:29 No.1886903
I think we should go for the diplomatic solution with the Dragons.

One of the Equestrian diplomats briefs you on the situation.
Cloudsdale is the only certain ally the griffons have for now, but discussions have been started with the Spice Bears over supplying some Black Spice for the war effort. This will be very expensive, but almost certainly a winning solution.
The new wild card at the table is the young dragon, Noise. He says many of the dragons are tired, frightened and desperate, and that a compromise might be possible. Nobody is quite sure if that is a good idea though.

>> Sheffield [Mage] 05/12/12(Sat)13:33 No.1886959
A compromise may be possible if the dragons are desperate. Still worth investing in firepower to serve as our cards, but we can probably do without any conflict. Ask the griffons how much land can be spared without needing to destroy any griffon settlements, and what the dragons will need.
>> Rib the Tracker 05/12/12(Sat)13:33 No.1886963

The General says the he would prefer the Spice Bears himself, but this is a decision that only the King can make. They can only present the best argument they have.
Dragons seem like unlikely and dangerous allies, but would be incredibly powerful and carry future benefits. However a compromise would mean driving entire towns out of their homes to make room for dragon roosts.
The Spice Bears are reliable, but expensive. Also transporting the Black Spice takes so long the deal must be made now if they are to test the weapons before the dragons arrive.
Going with both solutions would leave the kingdom with both drained coffers and hundreds of homeless griffons to care for.

A decision must be made so they can present it to the king.

>> DM 05/12/12(Sat)13:42 No.1887100
As a vote is called you support the plan to ally with the dragons.
Noise speaks, saying she and her kind will be in eternal debt for your kindness. They will need places to roost in, however, and they fear the only option is to clear out an entire griffon town. She also fears some of the elder dragons might not honour the deal.

You may now discuss the issue further or head to the king and wait for the other group.
>> Birdy [Paladin] 05/12/12(Sat)13:43 No.1887112

Right then
Tell Noise that she must get the elders to compromise, or they will at worst be annihilated in their weakened state is conflict is forced. Stress concern for their kind, but we will have no choice in the matter if they do anything to provoke the Griffon kingdom, she should know how their attitudes are.

One town is permissible, meet up with the others and report to king.

>Dm takes a double critical fail for us

>> DM 05/12/12(Sat)13:50 No.1887223
The cost of the Black Spice would mean that either the taxes need to be raised for several years to come in order to keep the quality of life in the kingdom at the same level, or many services would need to be shut down for a while. The latter could be devastating if any towns need to be rebuilt afterwards, the former would cause unrest in the population.
A minimum of one large town would be evacuated, but the general fears that if news spreads that there is roosting ground in these mountains, more dragons will come and the problem will start all over again.

So either you risk some civil unrest, long hospital lines and no new housing, or risk having a second wave of dragons arrive if words gets out.

You all meet up in the throne room. With you are the General, the head of the diplomats, Noise, the three lead engineers and the Spice Bear ambassador.
One of the high ranking officers of Cloudsdale, along with his retinue are also present.

The griffon king listens to what you all have to say.
The General says he does not trust the dragons as allies. They are too proud and unpredictable. If word gets out, all of the kingdom might fall as dragons seek to roost there. He votes you buy the Black Spice
Noise says she can arrange a deal with the dragons who are willing to listen, but fears there are some who will do what they want regardless. She would need undeniable proof that those who co-operate will not be harmed, and asks for either one large town or two smaller ones to be evacuated for roosting ground.
The head diplomat agrees with Noise, stating that the cost in lives and money would be too great if this comes to all out war.
The engineers say they have reached new breakthroughs, and that the airship Stormherald will be ready before the dragons arrive in force. They can arm it with a main cannon capable of (probably) killing a dragon with a single hit, but the current supply of Black Spice is not sufficient. Alternatively, they can arm it more lightly, but that runs the risk of needing more hits to bring down the targets.
Cloudsdale has already agreed to send theirs to fight and die if needed. They will also help power the Stormherald.

You may now roll to convince the king to pick either option.
He is currently neutral.
A success adds +1 towards that idea
A failure deducts -1
A crit adds or deducts +/-2

The king thinks deeply on the issue. He still fears for the lives of his subjects, but understands that even with a weapon as mighty as the Black Spice, there would be too many losses. He also does not want the hit to his public image that rising taxes would bring.

He agrees to make a deal with the dragons, and empty out two towns. He writes Noise and official notice, stating that the dragons may roost in designated roosting areas. Any caught elsewhere will be considered enemies and killed on sight.

Your gear will be there once you return to the Stormherald. The engineers are still building it, now without spare black spice to use.
Old Ironhide made a name for himself
four hundred years ago during those dragon migrations. He was massive even compared to other dragons, and had great iron plates hammered to his skin and scales. Most dragons suspected he had paid some other race to build them onto him, but there was no proof.
What fueled Ironhide's rage was a mystery, but he blindly attacked any dragon that got in his way, openly destroying any eggs he could find. The iron plates and countless fights had left him so disfigured that none could be sure what he once looked like. Perhaps he was a dragon someone once knew. Perhaps he was a loner or an outsider. Whatever his past was, it had to be traumatic. What else would drive a dragon to so blindly slay his own kind?
His fury scattered the tribes, forcing them outwards from their traditional roosting grounds in search of safety. Matings failed and eggs were lost, causing a severe dip in dragon population. There were also many clashes between dragons and other races, as the dragons sought roosts, just like now.

All seemed lost until Celestia the princess of Equestria stepped forth to stop the madness before her capital of Canterlot would come under attack.
Gathering countless unicorns, some of them famous and notable, as well as shamans and warriors, she made a pact with the dragons. Learning the deepest secrets and weaknesses of a dragon first hand, she guided her unicorns in creating a spell that could weaken the mighty Ironhide.
The other dragon clans united to face Ironhide in battle, and through many died that day, the combined armies of dragons and ponies managed to bring down Ironhide.
However, he was too strong to finish off that day, with every army in rags, the unicorns instead sealed him in a mighty stone prison, sealing him there forever with shrines that sustained their weakening spell.
Now the shrines have been broken and Ironhide has returned, still consumed with rage against the dragons, and now with a similar hatred of ponies, especially the unicorns and Celestia.
At least, that is the story as it was told to her.

The engineers begin drawing up plans.
They say they can either build cloud chambers inside the hull to store clouds that can be used to release lightning, or add lightning rods to the top to harvest power from the stormy sky.
The chambers will be easy to protect and supply constant, safe power, but they need pegasi to man them at all times.
The rods are less reliable but save space inside the hull and can be used even without pegasus crewmen.
Pick one.

The dragons don't really know where Ironhide came from or who he really is. His unnatural size and the fact that he never spoke were unnerving on their own, but the most disturbing part was his blind rage towards those who only sought to breed in peace. It was as if Ironhide wanted the entire dragon race to become extinct. This sort of thinking does not sit well with any dragon. Many of their kind are hedonistic and selfish, but none have ever been genocidal, let alone towards other dragons.
As such, Old Ironhide is only ever spoken of in hushed tones, and rather not at all. Only those trying too hard to be edgy would ever speak good of him. While many races see dragons in general as destructive and dangerous greedy monsters, the outright evil of Ironhide is on a level of its own.
The dragons are ready to do whatever it takes to get rid of the monster.

The rods would be a notable weak spot, but could pull in more power more rapidly, as the clouds they charge from could be swapped more quickly by any nearby pegasi without needing to go inside the ship.
The batteries can keep the ship in the air for one hour without being charged. With some modifications, it might be possible to weaponize them as well, discharging all remaining power as a sort of lightning cannon. Doing this would mean the ship needs an emergency flight device or parachute of some kind.
A few months at most
Dragons prefer straight talk and an assertive nature to sweet talking and politeness. Gifts of gold or jewels are nice, but in a time like this not worth much.

You set out to the dragon's roost. It is a mountainside crag, with several dragons uncomfortably draped across the cliffs.
You can count 11 mature dragons, 3 massive older ones and 4 younger ones like Noise. If there were indeed 20 when she left, two are missing.
Noise motions you to step into a circle near the foot of the cliffs and roars out for attention. The dragons turn to face you and one of the larger mature ones steps down from the cliff.
He greets Noise, and they speak for a moment.

If it fails, you gain no bonus as some of your meaning is lost in translation.

The engineers take notes, but say that the chambers would require much space. The ship cannot be expanded, and they need room for the weapons and medical bay.
They instead suggest pedal power as an alternative emergency power source. It will be taxing on the crew, but can be manned by anyone, not just pegasi.

As for unicorns, ask if they have any means of converting basic unicorn magic power into electricity. Unicorns may be a good power source, even if they do not specialise in lightning magic like I do. It will be difficult to find crew to man machinery specifically tuned for a particular sphere of magic, so let's try to limit unicorn specific roles to powering the ship so we can have enough crew

I have to leave in half an hour, I don't think I can stay awake for much longer

The discussion has begun. Each of the old dragon carries their own opinion of the plan, and the mature and young dragons decide as groups.
Noise says the general consensus is that the dragons might as well just take their roosts by force. Do you have anything that can convince them otherwise?

Now is the time for compromise to defeat a greater foe. If they want a fight later then its their deal.
>> Puli [Shaman] 05/12/12(Sat)15:37 No.1888941
I advise them not to be hasty in their decision.
The griffons are fierce creatures, and they can make allies with all races...
The dragons attacking the griffons would not only mean war with them, but with every other race in Equestria and beyond.
And as Mighty and Strong as the noble dragon race may be, they can't hope to defeat everyone else, and they might even face extincion if Ironhide's terror continues and they don't side with us to banish him together.
For the sake of every sentient being in Equestria, consider the Alliance with the Griffons.

You can join in the argument with some shaman-and-mage powered teleprojecting. Perhaps showing off the Stormherald will help convince the dragons to join you.
It already has. And will further. Stormherald will appear later, and how you deal with the dragons now will impact the next game a lot.
Noise nods and turns to tell your warnings to the dragons. You can see she is visibly shaken by the thought of facing war, and that she is clearly too young for the burden places upon her. Yet she still faces her duty bravely, refusing to flinch at the face of war and death.
One of the old dragons gives her a low snarl and leaves his roost. You have failed to convince him and he will stick to whatever plan he has in mind. The others are still not convinced.

Noise turns back to you, biting down to keep her tears back.
She asks that you present a new argument, and proof of your words.

Noise urges the dragons to listen. Her words emboldened by the kind shaman's encouragement and amplified tenfold by the magic of the totem, she explains that the griffons have allies and mighty weapons ready for war if the dragons attack. Times will be hard and mating cramped, but it is certainly better than death.
She is trembling, but not from fear. She has steeled her heart and understands that she is now the last thing standing between her tribe and death.
The dragons are visibly impressed.

As the remaining dragons begin to get up and leave, Noise dashes to a bag she was carrying earlier. She pulls out a pouch of Black Spice, tosses it in the air and ignites it.
The explosion causes all of the dragons present to recoil. She is yelling at the dragons. You do not understand the words but the context is clear. She has seen first hand what the Black Spice cannons can do. She KNOWS they will die if they fight.
Amidst the frightened murmur one of the mature dragons leaps down from the cliff. She sweeps Noise to the ground and roars at her, then turns to you.

Success! Your arrow strikes the dragon in the eye, blinding it on that side.
The experimental firepipe is a moody weapon indeed. It explodes as you fire, disfiguring your claw.
Your song, however amplified, fails to being fear to a dragon.
>Double crit fail + crit fail
Your spear shatters against the dragon's hide. It smacks you away with its paw. Your armour collapses into your ribs and breaks them. You need help.
Voices fill the dragon's head, confusing it further. It roars out, slashing at the ravens it now sees as terrifying demons. The dragon's mind is broken.
As all hell breaks loose within the dragon, your lightning strikes the arrow stuck in the dragon's eye, conducting the deadly spell easily past the dragon's defenses.

Now heavily burnt, mad, blind and bound to the ground, the dragon lashes out madly, trying to take anything it can with it.

Kill it to prove your point?
Leave it to suffer?

Back off and fire again

Do not kill it. But surpress it. Aim the bow at it and make sure it sees that if it attacks we will finish it. Also look to make sure Noise is alright.

Rush to Pointy and give him an enchanced mushroom.
It will be one trippy ride, but hopefully it can heal some of the damage.

Finish it off.

Your claw is still a mangles mess. You will never use it again.
Here's hoping you're ambidextrous.
Pointy drags himself up as Puli rushes to help him. The treatment is a bit worryingly trippy, but the knight should survive.
Noise is breathing heavily. She had known that dragon her entire life. It had always been very protective of her young, but never outright hostile to anyone. Seeing it laying there, scorched and screaming was horrible. She asks you finish the job.
The other dragons look on in terror. They never expected this to turn into such a horrorshow.

Final dragon opinnion: scared shitless

>> Puli [Shaman] 05/12/12(Sat)16:59 No.1890335
Try to summon more roots to choke it.
I would use my dagger or blood Voodoo, but it's too dangerous to go close and finish it quickly.

>> Puli [Shaman] 05/12/12(Sat)17:06 No.1890478
I already summoned roots to choke it.
Not the best way to go, but he picked to fight us.
That will teach them that this dog is not 'All bark no bite".
>> DM 05/12/12(Sat)17:07 No.1890488
As more roots burst forth to grasp the neck of the wounded dragon, it slowly falls silent, then still. Finally it stops breathing.
Her fear and suffering is at an end.
You simply cannot build the strength to teleport an object that large.
As the party begins to look after their wounded, the dragons gather to discuss their next move.
After a while Noise comes to talk to you. The dragons, save for two, will come quietly and be thankful for the roosts they are given. If the call to arms is sounded, they will give their lives to battle Old Ironhide.
The two who refused the offer might be a problem later though.

Noise and the other dragons take flight and head for the griffon kingdom, leaving behind what riches they had gathered, along with the dead dragon.

You may gather what you wish from the area before leaving to report back to the king, or go straight away.

I yell after them 'TAKE THE ROOSTS OR FIGHT THE ROOTS!' and point at the dead dragon.

Then I scavenge the dead dragon for anything useful for spells, like his tooth, saliva, scales, heart, and the like.
>> Rib the Tracker 05/12/12(Sat)17:10 No.1890557
Walk up to the dead dragon and sit by its head. Sulk and look down, disappointed that it couldn't have happened another way.

Look up to watch the dragons fly away but still feel down. Tell the others to head on back and that I would meet up with them later.
I actually gotta get going anyway. If you are still questing in 45 minutes I might be able to hop back in.
>> Pointy [Warrior] 05/12/12(Sat)17:10 No.1890558

You find a gem-encrusted mace. It looks well made and likely blessed. The decorations remind you of the sun.
You find a hollow dragon's horn, along with oodles of gold.
Among the dragons' hoards you locate a strange cube inscribed with text. Most likely a fancy historical record, possibly a magical one.
You tend to the wounds of your allies, ensuring they can make it safely to get proper treatment later. You then harvest the dragon and surrounding area for several potent reagents. You might need to do some experimenting to unlock their full potential.
You head back to the king with a heavy heart. There will always be losses in times of strife, and you assure yourself you did everything you could.
Your search turns up a long halberd and a a gilded plate armour not unlike those of Celestia's guards.
Also gems and gold coins.
You spend the rest of the time overseeing the construction of Stormherald.

The rest of you return to the king with news and riches. He is most pleased, and says he will use the extra money to fund the war effort.

2 dragons will later attack the Griffon Kingdom, allowing for a testrun of Stormherald
One dragon clan has joined the effort to kill Ironhide
The airship Stormherald will now aid in the final battle. It is armed with a battery of small cannons and a lightning gun. It is manned by a pegasus and griffon crew, and is powered by lightning. It's weak point is the lightning rods on top.
The party is still alive, and can appear during the final battle.
The dragon Noise will help with future negotiations between ponies and dragons, greatly improving odds of success.
Two full griffon towns had to be evacuated and must be rebuilt later.
The people still think the king made the right choice.
