Ironhide - Thread 1 DM 340164[Last 50 Posts]

Every journey begins with a single step.
But just how different would that journey have been, had that single step been taken differently?

A state of emergency is being declared all over the land. It is the time of the Dragon Migrations, an event that only happens once every few decades. A perilous time even at the best of times, with hundreds of dragons of all ages roam the land in search of mating grounds. The death toll is often in the dozens even during peaceful migrations, but this time, things are different.

A hapless group of adventurers, seeking fortune, fame and divine guidance, happened upon a shrine dedicated to a long-forgotten ancient dragon, Old Ironhide.
These adventurers destroyed the shrine, not knowing their actions would lead to a chain of events that would reshape the entire world.
The destruction of the shrine lead to the return of Old Ironhide. Thought long dead, he seemed to have simply been imprisoned instead. However, dragon history is a subject humenkind knows very little about. As such, academics, historians and others of suited skills have rushed to find clues to the history of Ironhide, what his crimes were, and how to stop him.
Meanwhile the dread dragon is disrupting the dragon migrations, causing widespread chaos and havoc.

Many heroes seek to protect their homeland from this beast, and your party is among them. You must find out more about your foe, discover his weakness, gather allies to face him, and somehow put an end to his reign of terror.

For this purpose, you have gathered in Grand Capital, the ancient seat of power for the Humen Empire. Though once ruled by a mighty Primordial, it now houses the three thrones of the Three Kings of the Humen, Demi and Bordfolk. As many seek shelter in the capital, you also know that the capital's resources are available for open use by any who have a valid reason to need them against Ironhide. Thus, several scholars from around the realm have gathered at the Imperial Archives to discuss the situation.

You have arrived at Grand Capital recently, well rested and ready for action.
Lets see what happens…

There are roads leading from here to the Imperial Palace and the Archives, to the Demi District, the Bord Houses, the Humen quarters, the Grand Market, the Imperial Guard HQ and Barracks, and the Gardens.

We can assume everyone came here as a collective party.

At the Archives, the air is tense as scholars silently move from shelf to shelf, searching for material they need.
A few archivists and librarians are on call to help all in need of aid.

A note on the wall reads
>Emergency meeting in fourth floor grand hall. All Dragon Scholars should attend
Next to the note is a list of the floors
1 - Entrance, Common Lore, History
2 - Magic
3 - Nature, Biology, Animals
4 - Reading hall

While a baby dragon as a rather spongy thing incapable of taking much punishment, a dragon of a dew decades of age can be as hard to crack open as a knight in full plate, and one of several centuries or more can be as tough as a boulder and as tall as a mountain. Specialized weapons are suggested for use in dragon hunting. Many prefer siege weapons, though hitting a dragon accurately with one is very difficult.

However, Lightning damage, as well as some Dark Arts have proven slightly more effective. Some scholars argue a dragon's color relates to their magical capabilities. Others dismiss this idea as cliche and dumb.-]
>>340200
There are some free seats left over.
"And what do you propose we do?"
"This time around we don't have a Primordial on our side!"
"Rest assured, gentlemen, that we have taken several measures to prepare for the coming storm. Our military is on high alert. And more importantly, we have sent word to the northern shipyards to prepare a special weapon to take the fight to Ironhide directly."
"Have you not heard? The Shipyards are almost under siege! The Drakin are being forced out of their cities by the Dragons who seek safe roosts! And they would rather wipe out our settlements than anger the Dragons!"
>>340201
They look up, recoil a little, then settle back again

>>340211
"Then we trust the Shipyards will defend themselves."
"We need to send message to them. If at all possible, they need to ally with the Drakin for now to prevent any damage to the weapon."
"And what if that weapon is not enough?"
"We have only one other lead, and it is flimsy at best. We know Primordial Magic was able to weaken Ironhide."
"Oh great, great. So plan B is we find another Primordial. Sure."
"There is no need for sarcasm. This implies Ironhide may indeed not be a pure dragon, since Primordials were known as the natural, ancestral enemies of Tartarians."
"Are you suggesting Ironhide may be a corrupted dragon?"

>>340278
I have no reason to fear you. None have a reason to fear any more. Ironhide is coming. And he will kill us all. We simply sought to save you from the pain he will bring.

The Three Kings, representatives of the three races of Humenkind, greet you
"We understand you have news for us?"
"Regarding the threat at hand, we presume?"
"Do speak then. For time is short."

The scholar offers the bag up, and a pair of darting shadows grasp in, and move silently and swiftly to the thrones, presenting the contents of the bag to the kings
"Thank you Cloak. Dagger."
"Please, remain with us."
"Provided the problems are taken care of."

"As you can see, majesties, several facts imply that Ironhide may well not be a dragon at all, though he appears like one.
For one, in times past, he seemed weak against the magic of the Primordial Emperor. This may well mean his strength is Tartarian in origin.
Of course that could still mean he is simply a corrupted dragon. Or a possessed one. However, the way he disrupts dragon mating, and actively seeks to break up the Dragon Migrations, implies he fosters a deep hate against dragons. One unlikely to be found in a dragon.
So to conclude, I have a reason to believe Ironhide, whatever he is, could be challenged with the use of Primordial artifacts."
The Kings think for a while

DM 340328

The kings nod
"Very well. That cultist meeting needs to be broken up."
"There are old maps that point to the location of the shrine in the Imperial Archives"
"And the north mountains do have a peak many legends say is cursed. So these things may be related."
>>340326
"…but why?"
"Curse those drakin and their damned reverence of dragons…"
"Come now. It is but some fringe cult. Not like all the drakin in Unison have suddenly gone mad."
>>340327
"Good."
"Alone? Won't you need help?"
"We can give you some troops to help with the task"
>Or indeed we can come

DM 340599

The pants are up.
>>340596
The shrine is not large. It contains a small chest on top of an altar, a statue of a Primordial, and some bowls for offerings.

Brenya [Rogue] 340600

>>340594
Quickly motion them over and tell them where this connects to

Mollika [Capra Tracker] 340601

>>340598
"Not when I climb you, no!
And the big green pea who got almost flatlined by a walking murshroom should really thank me instead!
Damn, those are just pants, I don't even wear them!"

Ärnim [Hork Knight] 340602

DM 340605

"HERE!?"
"SOUND THE ALARM! SOUND THE ALARM!"
A few moments later a full battle is raging at the well, with guards shooting wildly down it
>>340602
Looks like there are some fruit here,
And the chest is just a chest. Nothing special. Not even a lock.

Ärnim [Hork Knight] 340606

drop some food in the bowl, just in case. and then take the chest and start back to the Capital

"A job well finished, no?"

Brenya [Rogue] 340607

>>340605
That certainly could have gone better.

How many of our guards died?

Mollika [Capra Tracker] 340608

>>340606
"Yeah. Too bad for the knights who came here before us…"
Sit relaxed on his shoulder with a big smile.
Its nice to have a personal walking mountain.

Ready to go back to the capital.

Also, three skeletons.
The doctor seems to have fallen asleep.

It was a massacre.
At the end of it all, you lost almost as many guards as they lost cultists.
But for what it was worth, the survivors returned with some documents taken from the cave, including some stolen historical records.

DM 340617

There is nothing left there but corpses and death.

"So this is why the archivists could not come up with solid facts. The records from the year of Ironhide's first appearance had been stolen by cultists…"
"Incredible. This chest contains a fragment of an ancient Primordial's weapon. I'm sure our mages can still awaken the power inside it!"
"And what of you, spymasters?"
>Upon the northern peaks we found a hidden altar.
>An alter to dark powers, with a deep sense of corruption to it
>We were ambushed up there, but fought them off
>And in the process, we recovered this
They present an antiquated sword
>The sword of Sir Valiance
>From the taint you can see upon it, we fear we now have an idea what Ironhide is. Or rather… who he is.
"Sir Valiance?"
"THE Sir Valiance?"
"Sir Valiance Dragonbane? Impossible."
>Very possible.
>It explains Ironhide's rage against its fellow dragons. It explains his iron… hide. It explains why it seeks to return here.

Ärnim [Hork Knight] 340631

>>340630
"So what will happen now?"

Mollika [Capra Tracker] 340632

Rale [Aeon Necromancer] 340633

>>340630
"Please. Explain. Further."

Brenya [Rogue] 340634

>>340632

"It was believed he left for exile after being relieved from duty following a scandal involving him destroying clutches of dragon eggs and hatchlings"
"It seems he instead chose to turn to darker powers for strength, to finish his duty."
>Though his prowess in battle was matched only by his stubborn head
>There was one capable of calming him. His old mentor and commander, Captain Graceful Glory.
>Sadly, the captain has been dead for centuries
>So he is not going to be much help as-is.

Mollika [Capra Tracker] 340637

>>340636

Ärnim [Hork Knight] 340639

>>340637
>>340639
"As said, if at all possible…"
"…we would rather try and free the spirit of Sir Valiance than slay him as a monster"
"Not to mention, it would save a lot of lives to not let him reach Grand Capital."
>>340641
>We have lives to spare
>Even lives who know how to raise the dead

Ärnim [Hork Knight] 340643

"And then use the Primordial Fragment and hope."
"We don't really see many other options."

Mollika [Capra Tracker] 340656

>>340653
"Look, is some good to nothing dark artist who probably tried to murder somepony just for the same end.
I call it karma. No big question of wrong or right."

Aida [Humen Cleric] 340657
