Welcome to the Black Zone.
From this rooftop, you can see the Servant District quite clearly. And the closer it gets to the southwest edge that leads towards the ruins of Diligence, the worse the situation seems to be.
Yet amidst that swirling madness, you can see some fires. Clear bonfires that no zombie would have set up. Doctor Mordstein must be there, at the heart of this infection.

466859

>>466856
Point out to the bonfires.
"That seems to be our best bet."

"We have a doctor with us. You can trust doctors."

467036

>>467029

Please excuse me… I should… help my husband…

She heads to the kitchen to get her husband off the meat hook.
>>467030
Yeah the last doctor I saw had a man-sized growth on his shoulder and looked more horrible than any zombie out there!

467038

>>467036
"Who was that doctor? What was his name?"

467039

>>467036
"Our doctor looks normal enough for a human."

467040

>>467036
"Eew… I think we saw that one." I frown.
I then hop and skip next to him.
"Dont worry we are here to save you." give him a confident and cute smile.

467053

467054

>>467050
"He had followers? How many?"

467055

>>467050
"Wonderful. And expected."
>>467053
"It is, however, the name of the one we're hunting for."

467056

>>467050
Does he look normal?'
"Followers? That doesn't sound like a doctory thing to call you assistants."

467060

>>467050
"Don't worry. We're here to help you.
We'll bring you outside."

467061

>>467056
He is definitely still alive at least. Though his neck has signs of plague.
>>467056
>>467054
"There were… at least three I saw. Dressed kinda like you. With the masks and all."

467062

>>467061
"We need to get you to some sort of healer before you turn into a zombie."

467063

>>467061
"We are finding him to cure this disease, Do you know where he went?"

467064

>>467061
"Those were plague masks. You are not well, but still better off than the rest."

467065

>>467061

467071

>>467068
Yes. He totally does.
But it's far from being deadly yet.

467072

>>467067
"It's incredibly likely. You do have the symptoms. But, there is a cure."

467073

>>467067
"No need to worry. We've got something."

>>467068

>>467071
How long does he have before succumbing? Do I know?

467075

He still has time. Get him to the safe zone and he'll be fine.
>>467072
"I bet you don't have it with you…"

467076

>>467075
"Even if we don't, we're only a stone's throw away from the quarantine gates, where there is a small supply. They've been ordered to treat as many as they can."

467077

>>467075
"So we'll get you to safety first. Let's go."

467078

>>467075

467080

467081

>>467080
"They'll have to stay here for now. I'm sorry."

467082

>>467080
I just lower my gaze.

467083

>>467081
>>467082
"I… understand.
Should I make a run for the safe zone then?"

467084

>>467080
"They're very far gone. The cure that's there won't be of any help to them. But there is hope."
>>467083
"Your parents, though, do maintain their sanity. To some degree. They can protect you, I think."

467085

>>467083
"I am not comfortable with that. I think we should all go with him, then come back."

467086

>>467083
"we'll go with you."

467087

>>467084
>>467085
>>467086
"…alright. I think I just… want to tell them where I'm going first. If that's… ok?"

467088

>>467087
"If you want. Be careful though."

467089

>>467087
"It's perfectly fine."

467090

>>467088
>>467089
He nods and heads downstairs.
"…m-mom? Dad?"
Yes… dear?
"I'm… going with the doctor to get a cure… f-for the sickness."
That's nice… dear.
Be back for supper… ok?

"Y-yes mom…"
I love… you… dear
"I love you too… Both of you.
And I'm sorry if I ever disappointed you."
You're… our son. We would love you… no matter what.
Then they all sit in silence.

467091

>>467090
"We should hurry, while there is time."

467092

>>467091
"I agree. We need to find that doctor."

467093

>>467092
"But first the child goes to the way station."

467094

>>467091
>>467092
>>467093
"…ok…"
He gets up and comes along.

467095

>>467094
And to there we go. Once the child is safely away, we'll head towards those bonfires.

467096

>>467094
And back we go. Let's take care of this quick.

467097

>>467095
>>467096
"Hey… thanks. For everything."
He scratches his infected neck
"I dunno if this is of any use to you or anything, but I was looking out my window while I was sick, and saw some stuff.
The zombies get fatter over time. And angrier.
And that weird mutant doctor had some kind of glowing amulet on him.
Oh! And I saw stuff moving around in the swamp between here and the old town ruins.
That's all I really know…"

467098

>>467097
"..amulet."

"Right. Thank you. I probably don't need to stasis you."

467099

>>467097
"Thank you for the information. If that amulet is what I think it is… It's the only thing between the plague and that doctor. You were very brave to come with us."

467100

>>467097
"Right…go see those doctors and get yourself treated. We'll take it from here."

Y'all nigs best be here.
Because there is a doctor in need of heavy support out there, and he has the best cures you're likely to have for a good time to come.

If you have any preparations left to make, do them now. Otherwise, we move out into the zone and won't be back until we recover Mordstein.

The swamp itself granted shape and will.
And the strange gatherer, that never stays dead, no matter how often it is killed."

468454

>>468453
"Hm. We might have just killed one of them in our last trip into the quarantine zone. Are you certain they don't stay dead?"

Upon its back, a mare furiously hacks away at it as best she can.

Alternatively, you can try the side roads and alleys, or get to he rooftops.

From up here, you have a pretty clear view of what lies ahead.
The alleys and side roads are narrow, so using a ladder to bridge the gap between rooftops will allow for easy travel. There aren't even that many zombies up here. The closest one is on the next rooftop, fixing some loose tiles with an empty look in his eyes.
You should be able to make it almost the entire way up here, provided you don't fall. However, there are some collapsed roofs and entire buildings near the swamp edge, so you will need to make the final sprint along the ground.

She scratches her infected… parts.
>>470241
The other rooms are smaller
>>470241
In one of the rooms you see the hand thing.
It has torn apart one of the zombies from earlier, whose remains are all over the floor.
The other zombie is still alive, and seemingly more lucid. She is trying to struggle as the monster runs its many hands across her stripped figure, squeezing, petting and prodding, as if to measure the quality of her body, part by part. Its heads shudder and hiss, and its its eye darts around its victim, doings its best to make sense of what it sees and feels.
And in a closet, a lone eye peeks out, in terror.
#ENTER Madaela

She pauses for a moment
"I assume you know what place this is… was… right?"
>>470248
The hand thing seems fixated on her left arm, head, and parts of her torso. It has let go of most of the rest of her, but keeps prodding and pulling more intensely at those.

470254

>>470252
"I owe it for dislocating my arm."
And I'll follow after Tityroi.

470255

Look at them in determination and tap my staff on the ground.
"We must go."

470324

>>470323
"Sure."
Walk back to the other girl.
"Make sure to use that cure."

470325

>>470323
I nod at this, secure my gas mask and pack my bag
"Lets go."

470326

You hear a loud bang inside.
There are no other sounds.

470327

He dropped it? I didn't know!
Pick it the fuck up, or wait let Danner pick it up, since I'm off.

470328

>>470327
I did say a bolt to his hand made him fling it across the room, and it landed safely, proving it is not fragile.

470329

And hand it to Frost or Danner, whoever wants it.

>>470331
Put it on my bag and follow Danner

470333

You hop down the hole and find Danner near the pantry.
There are two exits from here. One goes to a dining hall, and the other to a storage area.

470334

>>470330
"What a waste…"

470335

>>470334
I go rummage my bag and produce the flask and give it to Danner.

"Here, the good doctor says that I shall give this to you." I smile.

470336

>>470335
"Thank you. Though I think Mordstein will want this."

470337

>>470336
"For safe keeping, perhaps that is what the doctor is thinking."

470338

You can head to the Dining Hall or Storage Room.
Or we can pause here

"Well it will be safe."

470345

I nod at him.
"Its very very close, just outside." I whispered.

470347

>>470346
"Well he's blocking our way out. We have to go through him."

470348

You can look outside without alerting anything.

470349

>>470348
It's really all we can do with a party of two. I'll take a peek.

470350

>>470347

I then breath in and steel myself.
"You will lead the way and I will follow and support you. Any time we dont take actions Mordstein may get in trouble."
Should we engage now or wait for the others?

>>470348
Do just that.
Just peek and see whats outside.

470351

>>470349
>>470350
The flesh giant is walking around between the two piles of corpses further away, occasionally glancing around.
If you time it well, the smoke from the bonfires will give you enough cover to let you make it to Mordstein's outpost unseen.

470397

"No.
We're just a few watchmen and doctors. Not an attack team."
>>470394

>>470396
"Hold on there… lady. We know what it is, but we don't know where it came from."
>>470393
He lets you pass.
The inside of the outpost is mostly made up of shanties and tents, full of samples, tools and notes on every possible surface.
A few doctors mill around doing their work in protective gear. Except one. Who is not wearing a mask. Or a shirt for that matter. His left arm flails about at random with no real direction or purpose, and his left shoulder is badly swollen and bulging out, having frown to an inhuman size.

470398

The shirtless one with the massive shoulder and twerky arm turns around
"Yes?
Oh? Hello little pony. Where did you come from?"

"Sorry for having to see that. I hadn't noticed it had grown back again.
You were saying?"
>>470406
You see Frosty talking to someone clearly infected, who then pulls his own arm and a massive chunk of his shoulder off with one hand, and tosses it over the wall.

I then notion to the medical team.

>>470419
Looks like the others already found him
>>470424
"Well I have enough data to continue my work in other locations just as easily now."
>>470421
"Ah.
Well, my research has indicated that the plague is of magical origin. Powerful magic. Volatile and difficult to control, let alone replicate. Indeed lately I've begun to believe it may be coming from the castle in Dilicence's ruins. After all, it was once rumored that the woman for whom it was built, Lady Rotunda I, was a witch."

470430

>>470428
Nothing strange with half naked man, you know.

470434

>>470428
"Much of that lines up with what we've encountered so far. The doctors back outside the zone suspected that this was magical in origin, and the fact that several of the victims somehow remain lucid helps confirm it. In fact, I came here in pursuit of Rotunda herself, but I'll settle for whoever is currently residing in there if they're behind this madness."

470438

>>470430
Even one who can rip his own arm clean off?

"…this place is just swarming with new faces today…
Yes. I do. A concentrated form of the cure I've managed to devise, that practically melts infected flesh.
Sadly I don't have much of it. If only I still had my Endless Flask…"
>>470433
"Well I was wanted back in the Owner District…"
>>470434
"Perfect.
Now the only thing I'm missing is someone who can read Witchspeak. If I could, I could decode some notes I was able to get my hands on. With them, I may be able to create a stronger, or a more surefire cure."

470440

>>470438
That's disgusting and unclean.

470445

>>470438
"That may be more of a problem. We're still not entirely sure how Witchspeak works."

470449

>>470440
Sounds perfect for you, forest lady
>>470445
"Nobody does, save for witches. And their students.
Still, I can make more cures even without it. They just won't be as effective as I hoped. Still, a lot better than my early attempts."
He glances at his missing arm

470450

>>470438
"So you can't spare some?"

470451

>>470445
>>470438
I nod at this.
"None of us are good at that, though may learn if necessary.

470461

>>470450
"I doubt the amount I have is enough for anything beyond testing."
>>470456
"Oh please. Until this is stopped at the source, it isn't over. And even then we may need to clean up every last infected that already walks"
>>470451
"Planning to become a witch, are you?"

YOU PEOPLE HAVE HIS FLASK JUST GIVE IT BACK TO HIM ALREADY

470463

>>470461

>>470470
"AH! You found it! Brilliant!
I'd ask where it was but truthfully I don't care. With this, and a few of these…"
He walks off to get a few canisters and a pump, then starts rigging them together

470480

>>470474
I look at the flask.
"What is the flask supposed to do?"

470481

>>470474
I'll follow him over and watch what he's up to.

470483

470484

>>470481
Mordstein soon returns with a pump device and a fragile looking canister hooked up to the flask
"Genius. That's me.
This device will evaporate the anti-zombie poison and fill the canister with it. When thrown, the canister will release a gas that quickly corrodes infected flesh. A new canister can be attached and filled once the Endless Flask has refilled itself with a new dose."
>>470480
"The Endless Flask will refill itself with any liquid that is placed inside once emptied. It takes some time, but indeed it never completely runs dry."

470487

>>470484
"Fascinating. How long does it take to refresh itself?"

470493

>>470484
Usually a few minutes, but it can be temperamental.

470499

>>470493
"Where did you even find something like this?"

470500

>>470499
"At a curiosity convention I attended once.
The man who made it said he wanted to use it to fix his drinking problem, but it did not hold enough at a time to be enough for him, so he sold it off."

470502

>>470500
"Good.
So now we can kill them more efficiently.
Anything else that might help that cause?"

470506

>>470500
"Amazing. I'm sure this will come in handy."
I take the assembly.
"I assume we'll need spare canisters then."

470508

>>470506
He doesn't let go of it.
"I'm not sure if you're qualified to handle that. Drop a canister and any part of you with infection it in will probably rot and fall off."
>>470502
"I can tell my assistants to pack up our research and we can all head back to the Owner District to come up with a solid plan on how to fix this place for good."

470509

>>470508
"We'll have to get through a lot of them then."

470510

>>470508
"Well then what do you reccomend?"

470512

>>470510
"I can act as grenadier. Keep me safe, and I'll deliver the canisters when needed."
>>470509
"That we will."

470513

>>470512
"I'm not sure letting our source of the cure march into danger is a good idea, doctor."

470515

>>470484
>>470484
"IF that is the case then if the antidote is put inside it… "
"Everyone can be cured."

470517

>>470513
"It's either that, or the source of the cure stays here without any more resources."

470518

>>470513
"Believe me Inquisitor, if I thought there was a chance I would not make it, I would not offer to.
Even at the threat of being put on the purge list, I feel I should inform you that most of my cure experiments were performed on my own body. At least at first. However as a side effect of the several different approaches to a cure I tested, I fear I no longer quite… count as human. You probably saw my arm earlier. I grow a new one a few times a day now. They are never perfect, and they never feel like a part of me, so I get rid of them."
He pauses for a moment
"…You may have seen what the first one ended up like. Big flailing mass of limbs? Malformed heads?
That was my original left arm. I cut it off when it started growing a second head. And when I though to experiment on it, it ran away.
Though I did not gain my regenerative capabilities until later, it was already mutated enough to find a way to fuse flesh together. I think it may be trying to rebuild itself. Or… build a new me.
And I think it may have practiced by building the giant outside."

470519

>>470518
"Hand… Hand stole piece of Angela!"

470520

>>470517
"Well then you're going to have to keep yourself from starting more fights then."

>>470518
"…I see. I can't condone your actions, doctor, but all things considered you are extremely lucky, and I may owe my own life to your work before this is all over. But if you're going to keep growing new body parts like that, I'll have to find something to do with you when this is all over. Maybe a quick death saving these poor souls would be the better option for you."

470521

>>470518
"Oh, that's peachy.
So I guess we need to get rid of those now for you, since the regular zombies weren't hard to kill enough as it is."

470522

>>470520
"I can't promise I can do that."

470523

>>470522
"Then you will be better off on your own. I have neither the time or inclination to waste on the lost until we have found and purged the source."

470524

>>470519
"It takes pieces of anything it finds to its liking by now. It is learning. Very slowly."
>>470520
"Can't condone? Would you rather have had me kick down doors and risk killing randomly selected citizens? Or do nothing at all and just shrug when you came here looking for a cure?"
>>470521
"The more deeply mutated ones will be priority targets, yes."

"Now please excuse me, I need to pack up do we can leave"

"If you're not going to help, then I don't particularly care what you do."

470531

>>470530
"I helped you already, though you didn't even notice it, did you? That infected got awfully close when you fell off the roof."

470532

>>47053
"I'm not going to repeat myself. If you can't control yourself, then we're leaving you behind. End of discussion."

470536

>>470532
I huff, but say nothing.

472271

Mordstein's team has their stuff packed and are ready to go.
"Now all we need is a plan of action. We can all make a break for the safe zone, or I can send my team off and help you fight off any that might threaten them. Such as that big thing out there."

472277

>>472271
Did we get the hands thing already

472278

>>472271
"Do you think they can make it past that thing unmolested?"

472279

>>472271
>>472277
I think Handy-Grab is still out there. I know I haven't beaten it to death yet.
"I don't suppose we can use some of your braziers to light it on fire? Or lure it into some form of trap?"

472280

>>472271
I savage, I know nothing.

472281

>>472277
No, you just stole a bottle off it.
It's somewhere out there. Looking for more parts.
>>472278
>>472279
"It seems to have extremely dull senses. The smokescreen kept it completely blinded from our actions, so I imagine if we throw everything here into the fires, we can get away from it unseen."

472287

>>472281
"And if we want it destroyed so it can't follow us into the rest of the city? I doubt we have anything big enough to cause much damage outside of tripping it. And my fists can only do so much to something that big, even if I do manage to get to a vital area."

472289

>>472281
"Probably the more prudent choice, but we'll have to deal with that thing eventually. Especially if it keeps being fed by that pile of leftovers."

472291

>>472281
>>472289
"I agree with Inquisitor Danner"

472293

>>472287
>>472289
>>472291
Mordstein checks his gas grenade device
"I believe the mutation on it is so extensive these should rot it down to nothing… eventually. It would still need to be destroyed piece by piece, which will not be safe not swift.
I leave the call up to you. I can ask my men to burn everything so we can run, or I can gear up for a fight."

472294

>>472293
"We should wait until we have more support for such an attack."

472295

>>472293
Still visibly confused, try to ask him something.
"Why we… Not heal people?"

472297

>>472293
>>472294
"And if it follows us into town? We can't risk the infection spreading because it knocks down the wall."
I'll think a moment.
"Is it possible to set up the smokescreen so your men can escape, and provide us enough cover to take out at least the beast's legs?"

472299

>>472293
"That's what I was afraid of. How much gas can you throw at it?"

472302

>>472295
"I lack the means to produce a large quantities of the cure until I return to the Owner District, and though I have a hunch on how to make a stronger cure… I need even more help to manage that."
>>472299
"A can every time the flask refills it. So we might be at this for a while, even with you helping me. Be prepared for that."
>>472297
"I am not entirely sure how long it would take it to rebuild its legs, but that might work.
Unless it drags itself after us with its arms."

472303

>>472294
"Oh, but.. we should try to stop the monster.."

472306

>>472302
"Then… Move to Owner."
Motion away with my stuff.
>>472303
"Monster?"

472307

>>472303
"That's true…"

472311

>>472302
"By then the guard will be able to set up some heavier weapons, and settle it that way."
I'll look towards the noise of the large undead.
"We should likely hurry, however. It won't be content to just wait around forever, and that hand-thing might decide that this place hasn't been searched yet."

472313

>>472306
I nod "Yea.. a monster"

472314

>>472311
"You're right. A more plentiful supply of cure would be helpful as well."

472318

Majority vote it is then
A) Sneak back to the owner district for some chatting
B) Pause for now, boss tomorrow

472319

>>472318
I'm good for either.

472320

472321

472324

472325

By majority vote, we press on a bit more.

Mordstein's team springs into action, throwing everything they can into the bonfires. Unnecessary notes, failed concoctions, tainted clothes, dead bodies, tents, bedrolls, anything to thicken the smoke.
And it works.
Under an impenetrable black blanket you make your way past the undead colossus as it falls back away from the smoke.
Though the streets still contain walking dead, Mordstein's gas proves to be effective, melting away infected flesh, leaving the zombies crippled or outright destroyed. You make a final heroic push through a small horde near the Safe Zone, and with the aid of the Watchmen, secure a safe return.

Mordstein and his team head to the Watch House to report back in. The checkpoint Watchmen keep vigil, but for now it seems that the situation is calming down once again. A calm before a storm no doubt, but it will offer everyone a chance to catch their breath and get some sleep before the madness returns.

Mordstein is at the Watch House
You can also go check the Grand Inn if you need a drink after what you just went through

472326

>>472325
No time for booze, there are plans we need to make.

472327

>>472325
I'll go check in to see how Mordstein is doing.
He's making more antidote I guess? Does he need help?

472328

>>472325
I should probably get treated now, shouldn't I? I'll go see the doctor about that.

472329

>>472326
>>472327
>>472328
Mordstein's team has set up their equipment again, and are working on preparing larger batches of cure.
"Welcome back, friends. With the resources we have here, we can produce much more cure and a much faster rate. However, I fear it is still rather… weak. The plague magic at work here is difficult to understand from mere observations. Were I to have translations of the notes I was able to acquire related this topic, I could create a far more accurate cure.
However… I'd need a witch for that."

472330

>>472329
"A pity the one who helped us at the last outbreak of these zombies was not allowed to come with us, is it not, Inquisitor?"

472331

>>472329
"It seems like that's becoming more and more urgent these days, doctor. But do you think what you have now would be effective enough to work on my current affliction?"

>>472330
"Witches are not caught on hypotheticals and what-ifs. I made my decision, and I do not regret it."

472332

>>472329
Scratch my head.
"It's a dark day if we have to turn to witches for medical cures."

472333

>>472331
"Certainly. It should be able to fix mild cases."

#CURE & POISON
The Endless Flask gives you one charge of whatever is in it every time it recharges. It recharges by reaching a total of 10 on 1d5 rolls, one per turn.
You can carry 10 bottled items, be they Cures or Poison, plus the Endless Flask.
You can aways top up at the Watch House when visiting.

>>472332
"It is easier to cure a disease you understand fully. Without a translation, or some other venue of intimate knowledge, the best I can do is make educated guesses."

472334

>>472332
"And yet, if they're the only ones who can read the ingredients used in their poisons, it's quite tricky business making a cure, isn't it?"
>>472331
I'll just shrug.
"Regardless, if this is anything like last time, then those who are still alive, but infected, will be returned to their rightful selves. The rest will simply die. Even if the cure isn't as strong as last time."

472335

>>472333
"I didn't think of that. And in any case, if it would accelerate the creation of a cure, I'm willing to help."

472336

>>472333
I'll take a dose…however it's administered then.

472337

>>472336
It's rubbed over the infected area
You are cured of '1d10'% infection

Roll #1 1 = 1

472338

>>472337
…can I try that again?

472339

>>472335
"For now there is little that can be done, beyond keeping your eyes and ears open.
I suggest you get some rest while I prepare all I can here. There is no reason to rush off back into that place tired and unprepared."
>>472338
"I suggest letting it dry first. Believe me. Overdosing is not a good thing."
He pats his missing arm/shoulder

472340

>>472339
"I'll take your word for it, Doctor."

472341

>>472339
"Right. I'll take my leave then"

I'll walk to the Grand Inn. If a certain person with trouble to talk would try to communicate with me now, I would have time.

472342

>>472339
"Is there anything you can tell us about the hand creature? The one that seems to be gathering arms for no discernible purpose."

472343

>>472342
"That's my left arm. It was the part of me that was most infected, so I used it to test various cure methods.
As a result, it ended up with some… unique mutations before I got the formula right. I had to amputate it after it started trying to grow a second head. However, it survived amputation and fled. I think it is still mutating, and gathering more parts in an effort to "complete" itself. If you see it again, don't feel bad about killing it. It's just a heap of infected waste."
>>472341
As you near the Grand Inn, a somewhat scruffy looking lady comes flying out of the main door and lands on the street outside.
Her garb is unusual, and looks faded from the sun and from being through some rough action. Her pants are loose and her shirt is tight. her hair is cut short and her hands and feet are bandaged up to protect from injury.

472344

>>472343
I help her up.
"Are you allright, Miss?"

472345

>>472343
"How did it end up with your flask in the first place?"

472346

>>472343
"Good. I owe it a few hits for trying to take my right arm."

472347

>>472345
"i got it at a curiosity convention I attended once.
The man who made it said he wanted to use it to fix his drinking problem, but it did not hold enough at a time to be enough for him, so he sold it off."
>>472346
"…right arm?
This… does not bode well. It may be learning."
>>472344
She spits at the inn and then gives you a grin. She's missing a few teeth.
"Oh yeah, I'm good."
She then gives you a punch to the arm '1d10'
"I've had worse on a daily basis. Such is life on the rough side."

Roll #1 9 = 9

472348

>>472347
"Well, with as many heads as it had, I don't see why it wouldn't start. No legs yet, though. At least, from when I encountered it."

472350

>>472347
Try to not show how much that punch hurts '1d10'
"What happened in the inn?"

Roll #1 5 = 5

472351

>>472347
"I meant the arm creature. You told me that already."

472354

>>472351
"Ah, yes.
I suspect it took it from my assistant when he took it for maintenance I was too busy to do."
>>472348
"I can only hope it never becomes… too smart."
>>472350
She tries to keep herself from laughing at your cringe '1d10'
"I had a disagreement, and the guards had a disagreement with how I handle disagreements.
But what brings an upstanding looking guy like you here?"

Roll #1 8 = 8

472356

>>472354
"I see. Well it certainly has no shortage of things to learn from out there in the zone. Perhaps it may have even inherited some knowledge from you."

472357

>>472354
"I was looking for a drink and some rest."

472358

>>472354
"Or builds itself the rest of a body. Still, there's little we can do now except prepare. We'll need plenty of both the cure, and the poison, if we expect to stand a chance at cleaning all this up."

472360

>>472357
"I can buy you the drink if you can hit me harder than I can hit you back."
She says it very seriously.
>>472356
"That's what I fear. Even if it's just an arm, the fact that it tried to grow a head worries me."
>>472358
"…I'll start working right away. There is much that needs to be erased.
Now please. Go rest up while you can."

472366

>>472360
I'll nod, and depart. Still, there's little for me to do aside from rest, since I don't need weaponry, and the only supplies we need are being made. Perhaps I can pester the guard about preparing for the colossal zombie by getting a few ballistae set up near the walls.

472371

>>472366
Or you could go see what's taking Coltstein so long at the inn

472372

>>472360
"Uh…well I'm not much of a fighter, really."

472373

>>472371
True. The doctor is taking a fair bit of time. I'll head there.

472374

>>472372
"And here I was hoping appearances could be deceiving. Buy your own drinks then…"
>>472373
Seems some lady in fight-worn gear is giving him trouble.

472376

>>472374
"Oh. Well I can give a punch."
Give her a punch to the arm '1d10-1'

Roll #1 3 - 1 = 2

472383

>>472376
She immediately retaliates with a punch to the jaw '1d10'

Roll #1 6 = 6

472385

>>472374
>>472376
Or flirting. Dear lord, the doctor can't throw a punch. He wasn't kidding when he said he wasn't a fighter.
"Doctor, what seems to be-"
>>472383
Okay, so maybe not flirting.

472387

>>472371
I guess I'll follow him then.

>>472376
>>472383
"Doctor, this is no time to be making drinking buddies."

472388

>>472376
>>472383
"Pff. You hit like a kid."
>>472385
>>472387
"Well well. This place sure is getting crowded. Either of you two think they can hit harder than a girl?"

472389

>>472383
Rub my jaw
"Touche, my dear. You have quite a nice biceps and triceps."

472393

>>472388
That lady is mean to me.
My jaw hurts.
I wish Dusty was here.

472394

>>472388
"You should be careful what you ask for. You might get it."
>>472389
>>472393
"Doctor, are you sure you should be flirting while there's work to be done?"

472396

>>472394
"I wasn't flirting! I was merely…talking."

472397

>>472394
"Work, huh? What sort of work?
Need a fighter? Some information? I'm your gal. For a price."

472398

>>472388
"Charming of you to ask. Why are you beating up our doctor?"

>>472397
"That may depend on the information."

472401

>>472398
"I offered to buy him a drink if he could hit harder than a girl. He can't.
As for my information, what might you be in need of?"

472403

>>472396
"Uh huh."
>>472397
"Unless you're keen on facing the undead, or have information regarding witches, then I doubt it."

472406

>>472403
"I might know a thing or two about witches."
She nonchalantly checks her nails
"And places you might find them~"

472409

>>472406
"How interesting. And how recent might this information be?"

472410

>>472406
"Let me guess. You want payment up front."

472415

>>472409
"A few weeks, give or take. Well fresh enough."
>>472410
"I might give you a discount if you can show me a good time~"

472416

>>472415
"Well you've already introduced yourself to the doctor. Consider that a down payment then."

472417

>>472416
I give him a worried look.

472418

>>472416
"Pf. Please. That was a sad excuse for a warmup. Give me some real fun and I'll give you a nice guy discount.
Or you know, cough up some crowns and we'll call it a deal."

472419

>>472418
"Right. And just how much do you think this tipoff is worth?"

472420

>>472419
"Depends. Make it worth my while and I'll hold your hand all the way to their hiding hole."

472421

>>472415
>>472420
"Sounds like fun. I hope you don't disappoint."

472422

>>472420
"I can offer you part of the reward for doing so, though I assume you want some sort of down payment."

472423

>>472422
"Hold that though."
>>472421
She lifts her foot and curls her toes while punching her palm with a grin
"Lets do this thing then~ HIT ME!"

472424

>>472423
Well, she asked for it, I suppose. '1d10+1'
A simple straight punch should do.

Roll #1 2 + 1 = 3

472425

>>472424
Her smile melts away and she does a quick spin, kicking you across the nose
'1d10'
"At least TRY!"

Roll #1 3 = 3

472426

>>472423
I'll just lean back and watch this then.

472427

>>472425
She fell for my masterful ruse. I shall Tumble behind her and strike. '1d10+3'

Roll #1 6 + 3 = 9

472428

>>472427
That sends her on her face
She coughs for a bit and rubs her back
"Not bad. I actually felt that one!"
She then quickly hops on her feet, trying to sweep your legs from under you
'1d10'

Roll #1 5 = 5

472429

>>472428
Leap over that and level her with an axe-kick. '1d10+1'

Roll #1 4 + 1 = 5

472430

>>472428
>>472429
Your legs collide with a satisfying smack, and you see a glint in her eye
"Lets consider this the proper start then. First to three?"
She tries to wrap her leg around yours and kick you down
'1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

472431

>>472430
"First to three, then."
And I'll slither out of her grip and return her attack with a one-inch punch. '1d10+1'

Roll #1 9 + 1 = 10

472432

>>472431
Her eyes widen as your leg flows along hers, before delivering a sharp kick right on the sweet spot with far more force that the short windup distance should allow.
She crouches down and wheezes a bit, rubbing the painful hit, but stands back up with a fire in her eyes and a wide grin on her face
"That made me feel ALIVE!"
She then takes a more closed, reinforced stance and lashes out with her right, fakes it short, striking with the left, only to reveal that was the real ruse and finishing with the right after all
'1d10'

Roll #1 3 = 3

472433

>>472432
Grab her shoulders, lever myself up, and then continue momentum to complete the throw. '1d10+1'

Roll #1 5 + 1 = 6

472434

>>472432
"Gentlemen, ladies please."
I wave my arms a bit.

472435

>>472434
"I only need to hit her once more, be patient."

472436

>>472434
"I'm sure you'll be able to handle any mistakes."

472437

>>472433
Her overtly complex series of ruses is her downfall, and she soon finds herself on her back again.
"Alright… time to get serious."
She stands back up and stamps her foot down, winding her arm back
"Let's see you take a special one with stride!"
'1d10+2'

Roll #1 6 + 2 = 8

472438

>>472437
Catch the fist, and then counter it. '1d10+1'

Roll #1 2 + 1 = 3

472439

>>472438
Trying to catch that sort of a punch was a bad idea. It almost pops your elbows out of place, and sends you on the ground in turn.
"Can dish it but can't take it huh?
C'mon! Give me your best shot!"
She opens her guard and just invites you to hit her.

472440

>>472439
Like I'm that stupid.
"No shame from going down to a good hit."
Tumble up. '1d10+3'

Roll #1 8 + 3 = 11

472441

>>472440
Your surprise tumble hits right where it needed to to bring her down to a gasping knee, before she falls over entirely.
Looks like the really did leave herself open for that last one. Go figure.

472442

>>472441
Well, might as well help her up. Extend a hand.
"You fought well."

472443

>>472442
She pops her face up off the ground
"HA! I loved it!"
She then stands up on her own before shaking your hand
"If we meet again I'm paying you back for those.
But first, I think we're in business."

472444

>>472443
"And a most unique business at that. If only all my informants were so obliging. Usually beating them up only works for so long."

472445

>>472443
"We'll see. I'll need your name if I'm to remember you."
I'll smile lightly.
>>472444
"But, yes. Business."

472446

>>472443
I heal them both up
Healing Bonds '1d10+2'

Roll #1 1 + 2 = 3

472447

>>472444
"You just need to find the right market."
>>472445
"Name's Tappins.
I might give you my first name too if you come land a few more hits later~"
>>472446
"HANDS OFF!"
'1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

472448

>>472447
"We'll see. Mine's Red."

472449

>>472447
Avoid '1d10'
"I'm just trying to help."

Roll #1 4 = 4

472450

>>472447
>>472449
Her retaliation sends you flying back.
Next time don't touch freshly beat up parts without permission, doctor or not.
>>472448
"I bet it is.
So, here's the deal. Get me a room from the Inn, and a cold pint, and I'll tell you where not one, but two witches are hiding out in the mire."

472451

>>472447
"I'm sure you could give me stellar references."

>>472450
"Interesting. I suppose we have the time for now. Shall we?"

472452

>>472450
Why do people think I'm creepy? ;_;

I get myself up and walk to the inn keeping distance from our new companion

472453

>>472451
"Make it a room for two."

472454

>>472450
>>472451
"I'll handle the room if you buy the lady a drink, Inquisitor."
>>472453
I'll raise an eyebrow at that, but not say anything.

472455

>>472453
"Awfully forward of you."

>>472454
"If you want. I can handle that."

472456

>>472455
"You're the one with the questions."

472457

>>472454
>>472455
"Good. Good.
BREAKER! Get over here!"
A pony stallion pokes his head out of the inn door
"Yes?"
"We got a room!"
"Grand. How?"
"Red here decided to pay for it"
"What a lovely man."
"Ain't he?"

472458

>>472457
I walk into the inn and ask for a room.

472459

>>472457
Aha. It pays not to assume things, I guess.
>>472458
And I'll join him, nodding to Breaker as I pass.

472460

>>472458
>>472459
"Well you look a bit messed up. Had a run-in with those… undead types?
Ah, forget it. How many rooms?"

472461

>>472460
"A bit. But that problem will be sorting itself out soon enough. And it's one room for two. The horse and woman yelling out there."

472462

>>472457
"A companion of yours?"

>>472461
"One for each of us, if we're staying the night."

472463

>>472460
"1 please, a quiet one if possible"

472464

>>472461
He raises a brow
"You're with those troublemakers?"
>>472462
She nods
"Been with me a long time he has. We share enough values to get along well."

472465

>>472464
"No. But they have information we need, so a room shouldn't be too hard to provide. Nor should a pint."

472466

>>472464
"I admit I don't see many people traveling with them. The doctor is the only other one I've seen."

472467

um

472468

Alrigt what did I miss?

472470

>>472465
"Just keep 'em out of trouble."
He tosses you two keys
>>472463
And slides you one more
"Rooms are on the third floor."
>>472466
"The road can be lonely for one with no home or country. So one takes what company one finds."
>>472467
>>472468
The party returned Mordstein and his team to the Owner District by burning the entire outpost to make a heavy smokescreen that blinded the undead giant long enough to let you slip by.
Cures and Gas Bombs can be restocked at the Watch House now.
As the zombies seem to have subsided for a moment, you can rest up at the Grand Inn while the calm lasts.
The others also met Miss Tappins and her pony Breaker. They offered info on the location of two hiding witches in exchange for a room at the inn.

472471

>>472470
Is Mordstein nearby? Go to him.

472472

>>472471
He is at the Watch House.
"Ah. Hello again. What is it?"

472473

>>472470
"We're quite familiar with that. How did you end up here anyway?"

472474

>>472472
"Thats a very close one is it not? Good thing we make it." I smile at him then think for a moment.

"Say.. doctor, what is that.. tumor like thing that grows on your arm the first time I meet you?"

472475

>>472470
I'd rather kill zombies than rest

472476

>>472473
"We walked. That's sort of how we do things. We see where the world takes us, and see what we can do about it when we get there."
>>472474
"That's a side effect of some of my less successful cures. I tried to grow healthy tissue to replace infected tissue, but it did not work right."
>>472475
For now, there are not many zombies around. Unless you want to head out into the Zone alone.

Pause soon

472477

>>472476
"It didnt as we can see the results." I approach him.
"If you still have whats needed for the cure perhaps I can help in finding a way to improve it."

472478

>>472476
'Not many' is more than enough to kill by myself

472479

>>472476
"Well, bad luck of you to walk in here then. Is that how you found those two witches?"

sure

472480

>>472470
I'll take the keys, and one pint of ale that I pay for, and bring it out to Tappins.
"Room with a brew, as promised."

472481

>>472479
"Word travels, and so do I.
I've seen their hiding place. I know where it is and I know someone lives there. All rumors say they are runaway witches hiding from the coven."
>>472480
"Thank Red. Come by later if you want to… chat."
She gives you a friendly jab to the gut
'1d10'
>>472478
Try being social instead
>>472477
"What I need is a reliable witchspeak translator. Like… a witch. Or an apprentice."

Roll #1 6 = 6

472482

>>472481
Who would even want to socialize with an angry pony?

472483

>>472481
I can take that. We've had worse at the Monastery. I think. Have I? '1d10'

Roll #1 1 = 1

472484

>>472483
No, apparently not. She hit a soft spot. Kidney, probably.

472485

>>472481
"Witchspeak… " I look at him curiously.
"I've met some witches back then but I am no translator nor speaker of it."

472486

>>472483
>>472484
"Aww~ And here I thought you were made of harder stuff."
…she sounds like she's getting a little too excited about this.
>>472482
Well I dunno. Maybe she could try to calm down for a second and think about things.
Or she might be very alone forever.
>>472485
"…unfortunate.
However I can't think of much else you can do for me at this hour. Why not go rest up with the others? It will give me time to prepare."

472487

>>472481
"Then we could probably learn a lot from them…"

472488

>>472486
I'll just keep an impassive face.
"There is a difference between being 'soft' and being 'pliable', Tappins. And you know I'm hard enough in the right places."
I'll idly crack my knuckles to punctuate that.

472489

>>472486
She can't calm down on her own!

472490

>>472482
Hello, yes, this is horse.

472491

>>472490
I glance at you.

472492

>>472490
I walk over to you.
"I'm going to take a quick nap upstairs."
I tell you the room number, so you know where to find me just in case.

472493

>>472491
"I don't reckon I caught your name."

472494

>>472493
"Honeysweet. Does it matter?"

472495

>>472486
I shake my head.
"I want too but the disease still continue's to ravage the masses. Every hour we waste means more civilians are affected and will soon turn to mindless zombie's." I grit my teeth before looking at him as my eyes lighten up.

"Hey, I heard that someone called Miss Tappin is offering a location where a witch is hiding. Perhaps that is our ticket dont you think?"

472496

>>472487
"If they prove cooperative."
She downs her pint
"Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll rest a bit."
>>472488
She gives you a sly look as she stands up, running her hand along your belt as she walks to the stairs
"Anyone can make claims. Not all can back them up."

NEXT TIME ON FRUIT
GIANT SLAYING
WITCH HUNTING
AND PROBABLY SOMETHING SEXUAL, KNOWING US

472497

>>472492
Nod at you.

>>472494
"It tends to make conversation easier, no? I'm Iron Dust, the doc's assistant."

472498

>>472497
"Great, tell that to those who write that stuff on the graves. That's where we're all going anyway."

472499

>>472498
"The gravediggers? They're alright folks, but not exactly part of our competition. They only come in when we failed our jobs, which is something we like to avoid, y'know?"

472502

>>472499
"Failed our jobs? The dead are walking around. I think everything we knew failed."

472505

>>472502
"Never met a necromancer before? The doc dabbled in some. With him around… I'm not worried."

472507

>>472505
"So you are okay with random ponies and humans and whatnot trying to get a bite of your face?"

472511

>>472507
"To be fair, I'd rather be back at the forge doing what I'm best at. But I can deal, I wont let it get to me or I'm toast. I'm putting my trust into the doc's expertise here."

472513

>>472511
"You seem awfully close to him…"

472514

>>472513
"Well we grew up together… kinda. Without him, I'd still be owned by god knows who. I'm a free and independent pony thanks to him. Not to mention the fact that we're both in the same field of work."

472516

>>472514
"Sure…"

472517

>>472516
"Sure?"

472518

>>472517
"Yeah."

472519

>>472518
"Sure what though?"

472521

>>472519
"He didn't ask anything in return?"

472525

>>472521
"For what? My freedom? I reckon our friendship is what came in return."

472526

>>472525
"So nothing then?"

472528

>>472526
"That's what I'm saying, yeah. Like I'm going to let some human tell me that my freedom is not my own anyway."
I snort.

472532

>>472528
"And how long have you two been together?"

472533

>>472532
"Since he got me as a pet."

472536

>>472533
"Pet?"

472538

>>472536
I nod.
"You can't free an already free pony."

472540

>>472538
"Pet sounds like the opposite of free."

472542

>>472540
"Exactly. The doc's parents weren't as keen on giving ponies any rights as he was."

472544

>>472542
"So you two ran away?"

472545

>>472544
"Too young for that, we were… not even ten years old."

472548

>>472545
"Oh.
Right."

472552

>>472548
"So while his parents weren't home to watch over us, he'd let me to whatever I wanted. Eventually he started learning his craft, and so did I. When we were old enough, we left that whole business behind and opened our own business."

472554

>>472552
"And that business is?"

472555

>>472554
"Prosthetics. We forge them and apply them when necessary. We also craft equipment ranging from miniature scalpels to greatswords. And regular healing services as well, of course."

472556

>>472555
"So smiths then."

472557

>>472556
I nod.
"Simply put."

472558

>>472557
Nod and glance away.

472559

>>472558
I'm going to assume Dusty doesn't know about Honey's dead husbando.
"Now that I've finished my sobstory, what about yours?"

472560

>>472559
Noone knows yet
I frown and turn away.
"Doesn't matter."

472561

>>472560
"Doesn't it? What makes you say that?"

472562

>>472561
"Because.
I'm here to kill all those things, that's all there is to it."

472563

>>472562
"I sound peeved at these undead."

472564

472565

>>472563
"I have my reasons."

472566

>>472565
"I can imagine. Doesn't take a genius to figure those out."

472567

>>472566
I sigh.
"Reasons I don't want to share."

472568

>>472567
"That's fine, I can't blame you."

472569

>>472568
"Thanks."

472570

>>472569
Look her over.
"Got to wonder what you did as a job though. You seem like you can hoofle yourself."

472571

>>472570
"I was a ranger before Privilige."

472572

>>472571
"A ranger? As in law enforcement?"

472573

>>472572
"As in somepony who makes sure everything is fine and dandy in a forest.
Obviously, there aren't many forests around this swamp, so that was then."

472574

>>472573
Which pony race is she again?
I smile slightly.
"Sounds relaxing."

472575

>>472574
"It was nice, yes.
Except when the number of something had to be thinned."

472576

>>472575
"Did you work alone or…?"

472577

>>472576
"At first, yes.."

472578

>>472577
"A pony working alone, unguided by any humans… huh."

472579

>>472578
"My parents were rangers there too, that's why. And the humans didn't need to bother with keeping the forest nice, so they had no problems with it."

472580

>>472579
"That makes sense, I s'pose. Nothing like an earth pony to look after nature after all."

472581

>>472580
"It was really all I could have asked for."

472582

>>472581
"I never knew my parents myself. Don't know whether they're still alive or not, unfortunately. But all in all, I got it pretty good. Just looking at that Starburst mare is a good reminder of that."

472583

>>472582
"Starburst?"

472584

>>472583
"The yellow unicorn mare, haven't you met her?"

472585

>>472584
"Oh, her."

472586

>>472585
"Aye, her. She was kept pretty much as a slave."

472587

>>472586
"She seemed pretty scared."

472588

>>472587
"Can't blame the poor mare for being scared."

472589

>>472588
"Yeah. I guess."

472590

>>472589
"What will you do when we fix this mess anyhow?"

472603

>>472590
"I expect to take down as many of these things as I can before going down."

472611

>>472603
"That sounds fatalistic."

472702

>>472611
"I can't see many other goals in life ahead of me now."

472711

>>472702
"I suppose that's only fair. A massive outbreak of the undead is not the ideal situation to plan for the future. One battle at a time."

472723

>>472711
"And even now we are wasting time we could be using to kill them."

472725

>>472723
"People need rest too. You know humans, they're slow."

472726

>>472725
"I'm still good to go."

472728

>>472726
"If you feel like going alone and getting yourself killed is a wise choice, go ahead."

472734

>>472728
"I don't think we'll make it anyway.
Just a matter of time."

472738

>>472734
"Hard to tell at this stage, to be fair."

472740

>>472738
"Pretty plain and simple."

472741

>>472740
"Again with the fatalism."

472743

>>472741
"You don't understand yet. Maybe you'll see. If you are lucky you'll die first."

472744

>>472743
"Maybe I will."

472745

>>472744
"Yeah…"

472749

>>472745
"Well, it's been nice speaking to you, Honeysweet. Watch yourself out there, okay?"

472757

>>472749
"Sure. You too."
