Diamond Dog Fortress Campfire 295999[Last 50 Posts]

You have arrived. After a long journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, your harsh trek has finally ended. Your party of seven has fled from home for fear of being caught in a future war that might wipe out your entire pack. There are almost no supplies left, but with stout labor comes sustenance. Whether by bolt, plow, or hook provide for yourselves. With any luck a wandering trader may stop by before winter, or your new pack may even be strong enough to launch a small supply raid, but it is Spring now. Enough time to delve secure lodgings, ere the wolves get hungry. A new chapter of Diamond Dog history begins here at this place, Numbershadowed. Strike the earth!

When the water buffaloes you pilfered finally stop pulling you find quite the surprise. The Jungle is covered in snow! To the northeast lies a small hill. To the east and northeast the ground slopes gently downwards. It wuld be wise to get yourselves and your supplies out of the cold.

Pom [Male Runt Dog Gem Cutter] 296015

"It's cute to see you out here hunting. Usually, I am alone. I've been that way since I left my last pack. Do you want to help me clean the kills? Normally I like solitude in my butchery, but for a patient, I will make an exception. Perhaps you will help me hunt again in the future."

Drag that meat home to my domain! We'll clean it when we get there.

Boyar (Preacher) 306255

>>306251
"Thank you, Glove. In return, you may have my first share of the alcohol when we construct our distillery."

>>306253
"A good plan, dear brother. We need a big space for the many slaves we'll surely own soon."
Help out

Swell. Well, let's see what else there is to do…
Could I get an updated map?

Aida [DD Knight] 306258

>>306254
"Of course, I'd enjoy helping. Know any good recipes for these things."

Crunch [Knight] 306259

>>306251
"Guess that'll do."

Go join the others.

"So, how many of our new friends do we have?"

306261

>>306258
Another soft chuckle. "Sometimes the fun is in experimenting. I don't know many bug recipes, so maybe we'll sneak a taste as we cook, and try to guess what will go well with it. Worst case, all meat makes good broth."

Let's get to cleaning and cooking, together!

Roll #0 8 = 8

Campfire 306262

>>306253
You start to dig out a nicer room for her, but stop when you realize how much your room sucks. It's a sandy hole with a bed in the middle of it. You are one of the few lucky enough to have a door.

>>306255
"You still don't have a distillery? It looks like the rumors back home were right about you lot."
He grabs Road and wanders off to another room.

>>306255
Conscious of the finite amount of space you dig out an area on the same level as the Carpenter's workshop for future slaves.

>>306256
Almost done with the first segment of the plug, hold on.

>>306259
One of the dogs speaks up.
"I dunno, fourteen?"

>>306261
You drag the corpses back and manage to get some useful meat and a few internal organs. Cooking will require another roll.

>>306262
"Let's get started then. Maybe we can add some of the crops I grew."

Roll #0 10 = 10

306267

>>306262
Well then let's get cookin'! Take a little nip of the meat and tear off a piece for Aida.

"What do you think? Maybe beer-basted?"

>>306265
"Ohh! These are good! You have more of a knack than I thought! You and your ingredients are welcome in my little domain any time!"

She clearly has the lead on this one. I'll help as needed.

Roll #0 1 = 1

Switch [Pilgrim Cook/Fisher] 306269

>>306267
Surely I can't do much damage just helping her, right? Right? ;_;

306271

>>306265
"Perhaps a feast is in order."
Do what I can. Is there enough provisions?

Roll #0 5 = 5

Switch [Pilgrim Cook/Fisher] 306274

>>306271
Growl a little. He must have been the one that was distracting me from cooking well!

"What do you want, Crunch? You know I like to keep to myself in the kitchens."

Campfire 306277

>>306265
You cook a wide array of fine dishes with the bug meat, plumb helmets, and wild lettuce that were sitting in the storeroom. This will most definitely lift the spirits of everyone in-

>>306267
You drop a knife on your foot and start jumping around in pain. Your wild jumps carry you straight into Aida and send her, and most of the food, crashing to the ground.

>>306271
You come in just in the nick of time to catch enough food for you and a few other dogs.

Crunch [Knight] 306279

>>306274
Blink.
"Not really. How would I know that if it's the case? Not to mention you ought to be more careful around cutlery."

Campfire 306281

The mood of the dogs begins to decline sharply as the last of the alcohol runs out.

306282

>>306277
Sigh at the food being salvaged.

>>306279
I bark at him. "Because I built the kitchen so far away! Or you could ask, you know! Or have heard anything about my last pack? … I only dropped the knife because I didn't expect someone else here, and…"

Collect myself and another, this time very big sigh. "It's fine. Just take the food. I'm sorry, Aida. I should have not lost my concentration or my temper."

>>306281
I'll set about a distillery in a corner of my kitchen.

Roll #0 9 = 9

Crunch [Knight] 306286

>>306282
"I'm sorry for assuming otherwise. I don't make a habit of looking into the pasts of others usually though."

Go take the food to the new arrivals.

Pom Rainian [M. Runt Dog Gemcutter] 306288

Well, I can't just be a layabout all day. I suppose I'll gather some shrubbery.
'1d10'

Roll #1 9 = 9

Moloch [Charlatan Smith/Carpenter] 306293

Hmm…
How's the progress on that plug going?
Is it far enough that I can start plotting out a place to build my smithy?

Campfire 306301

The slave pin has been built, but lacking any stone or metal it is less than impressive.

The brewery has been built and is now churning out alcohol.

>>306286
The newest wave of migrants appreciates the warm welcome. Once they finish eating they begin building a trade depot outside the entrance to the fortress.

>>306288
You begin harvesting a good amount of greenery.

>>306293
"Stay back, we are almost ready to drop the first layer."

Moloch [Charlatan Smith/Carpenter] 306304

>>306301
"Very well then."
I get to work on carving/crafting some furnishings for the 'slave' pen.
Proper furnishings, not holding pens. The same we have in our own quarters.
'1d10'

Roll #1 2 = 2

306305

>>306301
Keep at that alcohol. Maybe I can make them forget my mistake like that. Try not to get too distracted by chatting. Or the alcohol that I'm skimming off the top to calm my nerves.

"I didn't mean to… get upset like that, Aida. It's a nasty side of me. Can you forgive me?"

Roll #0 1 = 1

Boyar (Preacher) 306306

>>306301
"What else do we need? A stoneworking shop?"

Pom Rainian [M. Runt Dog Gemcutter] 306308

>>306306
"Stoneworking, gem crafting, blacksmith, maybe, once we can find the stone… Clothier's perhaps. Don't think we have the thread for it, though. As soon as we get that aquifer cleared up, we should be able to dig deeper, and find things that are actually worth the dig."

306309

>>306301
Since we are getting more Dogs, is it possible to expand my farm?

"I love meat as much as the next dog, but I'd like to secure some more food for later."

>>306305
"We almost spilled some food, I'd be upset too after all the work we did." I smile. "You mentioned a previous pack, what were they like?"

Roll #0 10 = 10

306312

>>306309
I'll go help her with the farm, rather than damage things further in my kitchen for now.

"They weren't so bad. It was me, really. We lived in the lowlands, near the base of the Mother Mountains. I had such a bad temper back then… I am still not good at controlling myself, but it's better than then. They couldn't banish me, because I hunt and heal, too useful… They would exact themselves in other ways. Finally, they did end up sending me away, when I was no longer useful. They found a replacement. I just… don't want that to happen again. I want to belong to a pack in a real way."

Trail off. "I've rambled, haven't I? I'm sorry."

Roll #0 1 = 1

Campfire 306316

>>306304
You get started on a bed before stopping when you remember that you've seen slave quarters nicer than your living areas back home.

>>306305
I wouldn't call that skimming. You are now so drunk you can't see straight.
Roll every time you talk to see how slurred it come out.

>>306306
"We'll need that once those lazy diggers get off their asses and finish the plug. Some of the dogs are working on a Letherworker's shop right now."

>>306309
You create another plot and start clearing out room for a Farmer's Workshop.

>>306312
You just threw up everywhere. Go jump in a pond then sleep it off.

Moloch [Charlatan Smith/Carpenter] 306318

>>306316
…right.
I suppose I work on improving our own then '1d10', as well as those of the 'slaves' 'r2 1d10'

"Sho shorry… maybe I'd oughta lay down… Can I make it up to you shome how?"

Hic! And a stumble into the wall.

"Maybe you… could do me one last favor… and walk me to bed?"

Blush and whimper, tail between my legs. I don't like to look so vulnerable and weak.

I sort of drunkenly try to hug her from my awkward, carried vantage, buried half into her fur.

"Thank you Aida, you are a kind friend."

Roll for slur. '1d10'

Roll #1 3 = 3

Campfire 306324

>>306318
You start building chests and cabinets for the rooms. There are a lot of rooms so you don't have time to do anything for the slaves.

>>306320
>>306323
You can't even understand most of what you are saying.

>>306321
You sling her up onto your back in a firedog's carry and take her to her room.

Fortress Status Update
For the Alpha

Winter of the First Year

IMPORTANT:
The aquifer plug stands ready to be used once the ice around the edge of the aquifer melts. If the plug lacks the number of layers needed to breach the aquifer I have seen to it that the dogs left plenty of room for pumps and a drainage system.

Changes:
Things are going more slowly than planned, but given that we are a pack of misfits that is to be expected. For better or for worse twenty diamond dogs, including us, now call this place our home. The two water buffalo that pulled our cart here have given birth to a calf, and a wave of refugees have brought with them a yak calf. My recommendations are to let them both mature then slaughter the freshly grown water buffalo, but if the winter is harsh we may need to slaughter all of them. The young donkey slave continues to follow her old master around. Our fisherdogs have reported that none of the small ponds contain any fish with meat on their bones.

Industries:
The newest arrivals have built workshops in addition to the ones we constructed. The farmers have shown interest in setting up their own industries, but we lack seeds in sufficient quantities to support them. As it stands we currently have the facilities for the following industries:

Leather - Currently lacking skins to make into leather. This should change come spring.
Bone crafts - See above note
Wood crafts
Furniture - The building of a second Carpenter's workshop may prove necessary

Other Constructions:
A trade depot stands ready to welcome any wealthy travelers. Until we reach a layer of stone its location outside does not mater because we cannot protect it with traps. A large room for the slaves has been built, but will lack furnishings until all the dogs are taken care of.

Suggestions For The Coming Year:
Breaching the aquifer should be a top priority. We need more rooms, beds, doors, and furnishings for all the dogs we have. We need a larger storage room or several storage rooms dedicated to different materials. We need a dining area with tables and chairs.
