Alright. The party has gathered.
Please introduce yourselves so that we may begin.

All you need to do is tell us who and what you are. Alignment, deities etc are optional, but feel free to state those if you want to have any.
If I tell you to roll a test of some sort I'll use the last 2 digits of your post.
01-10 is a critical failure
11-49 is a failure
50-89 is a success
90-00 is a critical success
I'll start the story once everyone has a character picked.
Using names for the duration of this would be helpful.
If you need to leave please tell me so I can kill your characters and move along.

Aaaaand GO.

These mighty heroes have been brought together by fate. Or coincidence. Or greed. However each wishes to see it.
However, be their reason whatever, they all came following the same calling: a mysterious group has traveled the land, bringing news of doom and woe. They speak of a coming darkness, of a terror from beyond time.
Such groups are not uncommon, for the desperate, bored and unhinged often band together to tell such tales. Yet each of you felt some connection to these news and have traveled here.
You stand before an ancient forest. Beyond it in the horizon you can see the peaks of mountains.
Your quest is to seek out this ancient evil you have heard of, discover its true nature and if possible, strike it down.

What do you do first?

You gaze out into the woods. Charlie's keen eyes spot some things worth of note. Most importantly a path beaten into the undergrowth by what has to have been a notable group of travelers. Other things of interest include telltale signs of wildlife, possibly wolves, in the area and the sounds of the river from further away.
The map confirms the river is that way, and following it upstream should take you to the mountains eventually.

After some discussion an agreement is made.
Bardigiano, feeling his conviction demands it, will escort Celaire back to the nearest town to recover.

Before leaving, Celaire hand over what he has to offer - A hammer emblazoned with the sign of the Sun, a small book of folk songs and a glowing white stone. He says to write his name upon the ground with the stone and he will arrive to help you if he can. It was a gift from his old unicorn friend.
Before departing he tells you that the witches indeed live in the mountains, and seek to cast some spell that supposedly could destroy all of the land if allowed to happen. He tells you to seek the mountain of geysers.

You manage to catch up to the shadow and strike it down. It screams in pain and falls over with it's spine broken. As it flails on the ground in agony you see it is a unicorn dressed in ragged robes. Terror and rage flash in it's eyes as it spits at you.

You tie up the broken witch and drag him along.

You hear some low growling in the surrounding woods, and darkness begins to fall. Farticus' ass lights your way for about 10 feet around you. Beyond that it is hard to see.
The map reveals there is a rocky area about a mile upriver where you can safely make camp, and a shallow fording point not too far away.
The witch is leaving a trail of blood behind him.

With your combined efforts you make it to the campsite and set up camp. Thanks to your precautions you left only minimal clues to your existence. However Max is now very tired and the witch has passed out from the pain and blood loss.

You direct your attention to the growling. It turns out the reason you never saw what it was earlier was simple: you were being tracked by a Timber Wolf, which blended well into the scenery.
It is large and looks hungry. It may be related to the wolf you allowed to escape. The fart did not seem to harm it much.

The party convinces Charlie to stay his blade and let the Timber Wolf flee. It limps off into the darkness.
As you return to camp you investigate the severed leg. A sword decorated with softly glowing runes is stuck in it, most likely it was the weapon of a past adventurer who faced the same wolf and lost his life.
As per earlier agreement, Max keeps it.
Celaire returns to his portal and vanishes, promising to help in the future if called upon.
The party rests for what remains of the night, and in the morning all are feeling decently well.
The Witch can now walk on his own.

The party treks on into the woods, avoiding the main path. It seems to have become more beaten the closer you get to the mountain foothills.
Max manages to read the runes on the sword. It seems to have belonged to an earth pony smith-knight who despised magic. Chances are it has anti-magic properties.
As you draw closer to the mountain, the Witch starts to get restless.
You can also hear some movement and even feint voices in the distance.

Farticus attempts to make some flimsy excuse as to why he is here but the patrol does not buy it at all. As they prepare to tare him apart, Goat storm out of the bushes. Taken completely by surprise, the first of the three unicorns doesn't even have time to react before he is crushed by a mighty body slam.
As the other two scramble to keep the situation under control, Max leaps out and strikes another one. The two unicorns, knowing they are outnumbered, attempt to cast a shield spell to keep themselves safe, but the Anti Magic Blade passes through as if it were nothing, beheading the duo in one heroic sweep.

As you return to the bushes you realize that in your hurry, The Witch escaped. He is still injured though, so he can't be far.

This patrol is larger than the last, so attacking it is not a good plan. However this new info assures you that as long as the disguises hold up, you can sneak around freely in the area.

There is a main gate, a smaller side gate probably used for garbage disposal and the like, and a part of the outer wall seems to be under repair after taking damage from an unknown source. You assume this is the Witch Coven HQ.

How do you proceed?

Brave Farticus waves farewell to his comrades, accepting his suicide mission. He proceeds to the main gate farting up a jolly tune, and when questioned leaps over the entire wall with his wings, laughing as he goes.
All the guards raise an alarm and focus their attention on him. The path is now open.
>>1741146

With Farticus facilitating a flatulent distraction, the two of you sneak in through the now unguarded side gate.
The Witch Fort is mostly a shanty town within a wooden wall. It seems to mostly exist as a means to block small raid forces from reaching the mountain.
You see many run down houses and huts, a cave carved into the mountainside, and a massive staircase leading up towards the peak.

Farticus, you have 100 HP left. Each one of our posts will deplete that HP pool.
Your mission is yo buy time for the others now.

The rest of you, find the Matriarch and stop her before she can complete her plans.

Had the good cleric not left to tend to the needs of Celaire, Farticus might still have hope. Alas, now his fate is all but sealed.
However, the gods answer those who are worthy. Befitting the heroic sacrifice of a pegasus, son of the great race of cloudshapers and masters of weather, dark clouds gather overhead. In a mighty storm as mighty as it is sudden, great bolts of lightning illuminate the bloodied silhouette of Farticus, the gassiest of the Pegasi. In his final moments he raises his gaze to the skies and sees his comrades have reached their goal.
Knowing his sacrifice may well have saved the entire land, Farticus closes his eyes and embraces his end. His wings are tattered and his eyes bloodied. His body long since taken beyond what it can survive. In a final effort to do all he can he calls upon what strength he has and slams into the largest group of witches he can see.
Amidst the chaos and destruction, the witches rush to look for survivors, and the party enters the Matriarch's hovel.

Inside there are tomes, relics, totems and potions. Long incantations are scrawled on the walls and ceilings. A smell of death, fear and decay can be sensed from deeper within. It seems the hovel is linked to the crater itself.

Study hovel?
Proceed to crater?

As you search the hovel, going through the texts and studying the imagery, you begin to see certain repeating elements.
There are many different drawings, paintings and illustrations, some visibly centuries older than others, by dozens of different artists, yet for all their styles and ages, they all depict the same thing - an amorphous mass engulfing the land. This theme repeats in the writings. A corruption of the elements - a tainted water born of fire that will destroy the land and air. It is now clear why the Water God seemed to involve himself so freely on this journey.
Whatever it is the Matriarch seeks to summon, it is ancient and destructive beyond your understanding. Possibly some form of tainted primordial elemental.

You can hear three voices coming from the crater, an old mare and two younger ones. The old one must be the Matriarch. She sounds very angry.
It would be wise to do what preparations you need now before engaging her in battle.

Celaire makes a few rounds around the hovel and observes his surroundings. His expression reveals deep concern with notable hints of outright fear. Yet he keeps his tone as calm as ever.
He assures Charlie the tainted water will not necessarily be his downfall, and may indeed prove to be the very opposite. Between his consumption of the water and close connection to the Water God, he may prove instrumental indeed in the coming battle.
Celaire tells that he did his own studies before departing on this quest. He knows the Matriarch is usually guarded by her two daughters. Neither of the two are particularly powerful unicorns, but they are mean and one is quite bulky. The Matriarch herself is an old crone but a very powerful spellcaster.
Before heading for the crater alter, Celaire says a final prayer for the fallen pegasus.
>The sun shines brighter for each who falls serving it. Fly free now, winged brother. Fly and be one with the sun. Praise be to the fallen, and praise be to the sun.

You proceed to the altar poised at the edge of Boiling Peak's crater.
The storm still rages above, illuminating the scenery with rapid lightning strikes. As you gaze into the crater you see it is filled with tainted water like the river, only far worse. It is heavily discoloured and only semi-liquid. Worst of all, it appears to be moving according to it's own will.

At the other end of the crater you see three unicorns.
Of the two younger ones, one is tall and stick-thin, the other short and fat. Both are female, and are talking to the third, older one.
The Matriarch is a bloated and seemingly ancient mare, her features resembling rotten wood more than skin and flesh. She is furious, as the storm seems to be interfering with her spell. She is also missing a key reagent - a blood sacrifice.
Seeing you arrive, she grins and orders her daughters to attack. If they can cast one of you into the pit for the ritual to be complete, she won't use them instead.

As you brace to take the witches on, a massive bolt of lightning strikes one of the large rocky outcrops on the crater edges. A jagged but incredibly smooth shard lands at the feet of Charlie. It seems the Water God has sent him a gift with which to fight this final foe.

The Matriarch is located directly opposite of you, at the other edge of the crater.
The thin sister is coming at you on the left
The fat one on the right

Celaire charges the fat sister, screaming dedications to the sun he so adores as he goes. A bolt of magic from the Fat Witch strikes him in the side of the face, but he ignores the pain.

You have initiative.

The Hammer of the Sun proves most effective here, smashing her skinny bones. She topples, but the Matriarch lifts her body up from afar.
"NO SPAWN OF MINE WILL GO DOWN THAT EASILY. BITE IT AND KEEP FIGHTING!" she screams.
>>1743155
>>1743161
With her attention drawn to Celaire, the Fat Witch has little hope in a three on one battle. Her corpulent thigh is cut deep but she remains upright, yet the distracting pain causes her to lose focus, leaving her open for a killing blow with the Rune Sword.
As the Fat Witch falls over dead, the Matriarch shrieks in rage.
"IF YOU WORTHLESS SCUM CANNOT EVEN THROW ONE PONY OFF A CLIFF, I WILL SIMPLY USE YOU INSTEAD" she yells as she magically hurls the Thin Witch over the edge.

Luckily, you had the foresight to make a lasso, and you catch the intended sacrifice before she can become the final reagent in the ritual.
With life escaping her broken body, she whispers: I'm sorry Hydia...

Nothing stands between you and the Matriarch now.

As the body falls limp, you all charge the Matriarch. The seconds it takes to reach her feel like hours as you watch her stern expression twist through surprise to fear and further to sorrow and finally pure rage.
A mother that has seen her own children die before her eyes.
A sorcerer and believer whose life's work and object of devotion hangs in the balance.
And a rat trapped in a corner.
She is all this and more.
Exhibiting remarkable power, she tears large chunks of rock from the crater walls and uses them to make floating platforms for her to stand on. She flees to the center of the crater and begins to attack.

Celaire leaps onto the platforms, hopping from one to another as the Matriarch plunges them down from under him. With a mad glow in his eyes, Celaire plunges his blade into the matriarch, only to realize it had seemingly no effect on the crone. Moments later he ragdolls through the air as the matriarch retaliates, sending him crashing into the outer wall, his sword still stuck in her flank.

Celaire gasps for breath.

You charge the Matriarch from different sides. With Celaire's sword in her, she can't move to dodge you.

The Hammer of the Sun strikes the sword's hilt, striking it deeper like a nail of righteous fury.

The Rune Sword manages to deflect her retaliation spell, and cut deep into her chest, dropping her do her knees.

And finally, the God Shard striker her horn, and in a brilliant flash conducts the fury of the sun and storm through it into the Matriarch, shattering her horn.
With her horn gone and her body so damaged, she can no longer maintain her spells. You barely make it off the floating rocks before they fall into the boiling crater below.

As you go to Celaire's side, you hear a shrieking laughter. The Matriarch is trying to drown herself in a desperate attempt to become the final sacrifice needed by her spell.

You throw the lasso into the crater and land it around the Matriarch's neck. With all three of you pulling with all your might against the flailing crone, you manage to snap her neck before the tainted water can claim her.
You have denied the final sacrifice, and the ritual is a failure.
As the skies begin to clear up the boiling crater slowly calms down, a bloated carcass slowly bobbing up and down near the center.

A loud commotion is heard down below. The remaining Witches are engaged in battle with a large group of Royal Guards. You spot Bardigiano the Cleric among them. Though a bit late, he returned with help once he saw the storms gather.
As you consult him and other healers about Celaire, the Sun Knight interrupts the worried talks. All he wishes is to be kept alive for long enough to praise the sun princess in person.
The trip is long but news travels fast. As you rest in the same town Celaire was taken to when you first met, an important visitor is on her way.
That morning Celaire is indeed greeted by the morning sun in person. Though he barely lives past noon, his eyes proved he wanted nothing more from life.
