Previously, on Cute "Quest":

Heading out to make amends with Pinkie, Cobalt somehow ended up with a dozen doughnuts and a free "happy to meet you" milkshake. The problem of how to transport them to school to share was remedied when he bumped into Scootaloo. Using her scooter as a sled of sorts they brought the sugary treats to share with the class, earning some points with everyone except a braces wearing pink filly named Dawn. Luckily, Cheerilee gave Cobalt a candy to give Dawn under the guise it was from him.

The class sated for the morning, things went smoothly until lunch. Cobalt talked with Silver Spoon for a bit, before she turned the conversation on him. Leaving Cobalt politely turned down and a little shamed, she went to meet up with her friend Diamond Tiara.

Cobalt shrugged it off and went to finish recess by playing with Brynn, Apple Bloom, and Sweetie Belle.

After class Cobalt spoke with Brynn, who revealed a book of legends and mysteries. The two are now interested in whether the contents of the book are real or simply legends. Making a pact to find out together, the two parted ways for the night.

The day their courage is tested may be closer than they think….

#Friday: Dawn of the Fun Fair Day

You wake up, rolling over in bed to glare angrily at your alarm clock before smacking the button on top to shut the darn thing up. Getting out of bed you look at the small calendar on your wall and find yourself smiling as you see it's the day circled in red.

The day of the Fun Fair at school!

You automatically get +1 to all rolls for being Excited until Excitement wears off

You head downstairs for breakfast, and find a hot meal waiting for you. Oddly, a note lies on the table beside your bowl of oats.

Dear Cobalt,
We made you your favorite: Oats with honey. There's some extra in the pot on the stove if one bowl isn't enough.

Your father had to go to work early and says he won't be able to make it to the Fun Fair today. Under this note is an additional 30 bits to compensate, so you can buy lunch and snacks.

I have to head to Canterlot this weekend for an interview. I'll be gone for a couple of days, so I left some instructions on easy meals for your father. Try to make sure he doesn't blow up the kitchen (again).

Love you lots,
Mom

[3-2 to head to School early and see what's up]

You're just too excited to do anything else: You've gotta go check out the fair!

Grabbing your things, but ditching your school books since you won't need them, you head to School in the early morning light, running your little legs as you eagerly run.

As you get close to the school grounds you hear the sound of ponies working, the dull murmur of ponies talking or setting things up getting louder as you approach.

Finally you see it: The field that normally lies empty on the one side of the school has all manner of tents and rides set up or being set up, a number of ponies still propping up tents or double checking the assembly of small carnival rides. You think you see a maze in the back, but it's really tough to tell from where you stand since a small crowd of the school fillies and a few parents wait patiently for the rope tethered across the entrance to be lifted.

Asking the time from one of the ponies waiting, you realize you have a little time to kill before they open it for everyone.

You scan the crowd for any pony you recognize. Surprisingly, you spot Diamond Tiara, Sweetie Belle, and Brynn. Brynn is leaning against a tree on the other side of the road, reading a book. No doubt it's the one he showed you yesterday, the big heavy bound hide of the book looking familiar.

Sweetie is with another pony, a unicorn that's larger than her and….very, very pretty. A curled, purple mane and tail, with a near white coat. She has a cutie mark made up of what look like diamonds. That must be Sweetie's sister.

Diamond Tiara stands near the front of the line, alone, for the time being. She looks extremely bored.

The two of you turn and find yourselves being towered over by Sweetie's sister.

"That is no way to treat a gentleman who was only concerned about your well being! Cutie mark or not, you should thank him, not belittle him!"

You pick your jaw up off the floor to look at Diamond Tiara, who looks about to retort when she seemingly thinks better of it.

"Fine," she mumbles, turning to you, "Thank you for your concern," she says with a moderate amount of sarcasm, "But I don't want to talk with you."

"Better," the purple maned mare says, "It'll do for now."

She looks at you and smiles, "You're more than welcome to join myself and Sweetie if you'd like someone to talk to, young man."

She looks back at Diamond with a less than subtle glare, "Now behave yourself. Today is supposed to be a fun day for everyone. Don't make me alert Miss Cheerilee so she can contact your parents."

You push your way through the crowd a little until you reach the two of them, Sweetie's eyes lighting up as you move beside her, facing her sister.

"Cobalt!" she says excitedly before hugging your neck so tight you think you feel your eyes bulge, "I'm so happy to see you!"

"I think he notices, Sweetie, dear," her sister says, hiding a smile with a hoof, "Let him breathe before he starts looking Twilight's shade."

Sweetie lets go apologetically, letting you catch your breath before making introductions.

"Cobalt, this is my big sister, Rarity. Rarity, this is Cobalt, my new friend who just moved into Ponyville!"

Rarity bows her head, "A pleasure to meet you, Cobalt. Sweetie told me a bit about you last time she visited my boutique."

She chuckles lightly to herself as Sweetie bounces in place beside you.

"So, uh, what did Sweetie say about me?"

Rarity smiles brightly, "Well, she thinks you're just super friendly, and-"

"Hey!" Sweetie yells, suddenly running up and pushing a hoof into Rarity's face, keeping her from talking. She looks back at you and smiles, cheeks turning red. "I-I just told her how nice you are, sharing doughnuts with the class and stuff like that. That's it!"

Sweetie suddenly lifts from the ground, coated in a magic field no doubt being wielded by her sister.

You decide to see what Brynn is up to, but you keep an eye out for Silver or any other pony you know as you wade through the slowly growing crowd. The time for the fair to start must be getting close now.

Strange though, that you don't see Scootaloo or Apple Bloom. You spot Dawn idling in the crowd, talking with Twist. Maybe you'll talk to them if there's time after speaking with Brynn.

Brynn looks up from his book as you approach, marking the page he's on before putting it under a limb and waving as he leans against a tree.

You ask him what he's up to when you get close, and he opens the book to the page he marked.

Morata Nalan: Spirit of Tricks

"So, I was thinking about what we said a couple days ago," he starts, "I thought maybe we could try this one some time since the book says it's a friendly prankster. Maybe in time for Nightmare Night?"

Brynn flips the book back around so he can read the page aloud.

"Morata Nalan, or the Spirit of Tricks, is a relatively friendly spirit that revels in the chance to surprise and scare ponies. Lore has it that Nalan was the name of a pony who once tricked an entire town into believing it was winter in the middle of spring. Though no details remain as to how the pony did it, the legend says that when the Harbinger itself came to visit her at the end of a long and tricky life, she tricked the Harbinger into making her a spirit rather than taking her to the other plane. She slumbers until called upon, and after enjoying a few good scares, disappears back to wherever it slumbers between ritualistic summonings."

"She requires no sacrifice, just the promise of freedom to scare for a few days. And the following supplies."

He shuts the book.

He reopens the book, more towards the back, "I did see something about how to put a summoned spirit into a makeshift body, like a mannequin or something, if you were interested in that. Though it does have several warnings about something I haven't quite deciphered yet…."

>>498126
You agree to at least help gather the materials over the weekend. The two of you can do it on Nightmare Night, or the night before perhaps, and see if it works. If not, nothing lost.

Still, you feel a slight chill go down your spine when you think, "What if it DOES work?"

>>498127
Shaking the thought, you look around and see Scoots and Apple Bloom approaching. Apple Bloom has her sister as well, it seems.

You look back at the crowd and see Sweetie and Rarity waiting to the side of the crowd, waiting for you no doubt.

You can no longer see Diamond Tiara at the front, so thick is the main area with ponies.

Suddenly Scootaloo pulls you a little to the side, leans in and says, "So, uh….did you want to hang out today? Apple Bloom's gonna spend the time with her sis, I just met up with them on the walk over. I don't really want to butt it on them, so I thought..maybe…"

Before she can object you assure her she's not butting in.

Giving a brief goodbye to AJ and Apple Bloom, you head back to Sweetie and Rarity with Scootaloo right behind you.

"Of course she's welcome," Rarity says happily, "I wouldn't want anypony to feel left out, especially another of Sweetie's friends."

Sweetie doesn't seem affected by the addition of another friend, and Scootaloo seems happy with the arrangement.

Win-win.

#+1 Scootaloo point

A cheer rises from the crowd, and the four of you turn to see Miss Cheerilee at the rope that tethers the entrance.

You can't hear her over the cheer, but she says something, raising a hoof dramatically before removing the rope tether and retreating out of the way of the surge of ponies that take off into the fair grounds.

Waiting for the line to die down a bit, the four of you head into the fair grounds when Rarity is certain nopony will get trampled.

The main avenue of the fair grounds are lined with small stands, selling all kinds of treats. Gryphon Wings [think elephant ear], sweets, toys, all kinds of crafts, pinwheels, capes, masks, goods of all kinds!
Further down are the game stalls; Places where you can try your strength, ones where you can throw a ball at some pins, water gun races…

And at the back are the rides! They don't have a ferris wheel, but they've got one of those spinners where it spins you around horizontally pretty quick. And there's a mirror maze in the back.

"According to this flier," Rarity announces to your little group, "There's also a karaoke event that'll be held after lunch, a slip and slide, whatever THAT means, to the right, after the spinner, an art stand, a crafts stand where you can make some lanyards or something….a whole list of things this year."

She lowers the flier, "Seems they went all out on this! Now then, what sounds like a good first stop?"

There's so many things, it's hard to pick.

You and Scoots practically shove other ponies out of the way to get in line, Sweetie, being a little less enthused about this ride, brings up the rear.

You have to wait for the first batch of riders to go through the cycle, and you see them all get strapped in, excitement written on all but a few faces before the machine's arms begin to spin, the little seat boxes on the ends tilting forward and back a little as it gets going.

Quickly enough the thing gets spinning and cries of enjoyment or slight terror punctuate the air while the three of you watch from the line.

You look at Scootaloo, who seems super pumped up. Sweetie….not so much.

The machine winds down after a minute or so and the ponies on board are unstrapped and wobble their way to the exit. Nobody loses their breakfast, thankfully, though a handful look like they need to sit down for a bit before they go anywhere.

"Alright kiddos, you're up!" The stallion manning the entrance gate and controls says with a smile.

You and Scoots dash to the first box to be strapped in, Sweetie tagging along nervously. Luckily the box can fit four, though no other pony joins you. You look out over the side of the cart and see Rarity standing on the other side of one of the low guard fences. She waves at you apologetically, "Rides like this one just aren't my thing…"

>Goad her into getting on

Sweetie's nervousness seems to melt a little.

"Would it make you feel better if Rarity was on the ride too?" you ask Sweetie.

You lean over the rail again, "Hey Rarity! Are you sure you don't wanna get on? Sweetie would love the company!"

"She's got the two of you, dear, and I wouldn't want to ruin my mane."

"Maybe she's just chicken," Scootaloo says loudly.

"I am not a chicken, Scootaloo."

"I dunno, you're starting to look like Pinkie from last Nightmare Night…."

You think you hear a growl and suddenly Rarity is climbing awkwardly into the seat, mumbling something about "showing that orange pegasus."

Moments later the stallion working the ride comes by and straps everyone in, except for Rarity who does it herself.

Rarity sits beside Sweetie, and you sit on the other side of the cube with Scootaloo, who is grinning madly.

Rarity has a bit of a deadpan look to her, >>498188
perhaps realizing she's been tricked onto the ride.

"Alright, let's get it started!" the stallion yells, throwing a lever.

The ride lurches a bit as it starts, jarring all of you a bit before it smooths out its wind up.

Rarity's mane goes from elegantly curled to a flat streak of purple in moments, her hair flapping like a flag caught in a gale.

And still the machine speeds up.

You, Scootaloo, and Sweetie are screaming in enjoyment, though Rarity seems to be crying out at the loss of her mane's elegance at first.

The wind whips fast as the machine whirrs, and the cube rocks forward suddenly, forcing the feeling of falling onto you rather abruptly. It quickly shifts back, resuming normalcy, and seeing the other cubes do it out of the corner of your eye you assume it was supposed to do that at this stage.

You feel yourself begin to slide toward the outside of the cube, toward Scootaloo, as your slightly too big straps fail to keep you in perfect place.

I love that comic

You put up no resistance to the forces that be, and you feel yourself get pushed up against Scootaloo slowly but surely. She doesn't seem to mind, the two of you laughing and hollering like fools, just enjoying yourselves.

Sweetie has the same thing happen to her. The force of the ride scoots her into Rarity a bit while Sweetie giggles between cheers, and everyone is pressed against the far side of the ride.

Unfortunately, the ride doesn't last all that long, and soon enough it begins to slow down until you're able to move away from Scootaloo. She kinda slugs you in the shoulder after you do, though she doesn't say anything. She just laughs while Sweetie hugs Rarity, whose mane is now a tattered, wind blown mess.
Somehow she doesn't look any less beautiful, just different, though you don't dare say it.

You all unhook your straps and hop out of the ride. You find it difficult to walk straight, and nearly collide with Scoots on the way toward the exit.

Luckily, your stomach doesn't feel any worse for wear. Weird, but fortunate.

After the dizziness has worn off and Scootaloo stops giggling about how awesome the ride was, the four of you try to decide what to do next.
Rarity says it's nearing lunch time, surprisingly. Must've spent more time in line than you thought.

You decide you'd like to try the pin game, and the four of you are at the stand in a jiffy. Oddly enough nobody was playing it.

"Alright, who's gonna go first?" The mare running the stand asks, "It's five bits for three balls. Ten bits for eight. Knock down three pins and win a prize. Knock down five or more and get a super prize!"

You look around the stall at the varying prizes. Standard prizes are pretty average. Packs of candy, small toys or plushes, water guns… It's only looking at the super prizes that make you want to win. Giant plushes as as you of famous ponies and book characters, big saddlebags emblazoned with the logo of the Wonderbolts or Daring Doo, and….is that a filly sized Wonderbolt costume?

"How about a friendly competition?" Scootaloo asks, getting your attention.

"I bet I can knock down more pins than you," she says confidently, "And if I do…" she stops, thinking hard about the conditions she wants to set up. Finally she has it, "If I win, you owe me a Super Pinkie Special Milkshake!"

Scootaloo's cheeks redden almost instantly, and she mouths words but makes no sound as she finds herself at a loss.

Sweetie Bell, to her credit, keeps a straight face for a whole 5 seconds before laughing uncontrollably at Scootaloo.

Even Rarity can't help but giggle, "My, what a bold little colt you are."

Sweetie scoffs, "I think he was joking, but did you see Scootaloo's face?" She nearly doubles over again as she starts up laughing once more.

Scootaloo finally regains her composure, "L-like you would do that. You….gah!" She throws her hooves up and turns around, stomping about until she feels better and Sweetie stops laughing.

#Rules of the game
There are three pyramids of pins, each pyramid has three pins.
Hitting a full pyramid only requires a 3+ on a 1d10, a 3 meaning you knock one pin down. For every 3 above 3 you get you knock an additional pin down, meaning a 9-10 knock all three down.
It gets harder the fewer pins there are in a pyramid. For each missing pin the measure of failure goes up by 3, meaning the new minimum after one pin is down is a 6. If two are down, the minimum is a 9 to knock the remaining pin.
Think about this for your turn.

#Scootaloo's turn!
"Prepare to lose, Cobalt!" Scootaloo cries as she lets loose the first throw.

Sweetie can choose which plush she wants.

498429

>>498421
I'm thinking we let Scoots claim the costume as her own, getting it for her might come across as rubbing the victory in her face. So saddlebags for us, and maybe something for Sweetie? I don't want to seem like we're favoring her, though…the focus is on Scoots right now, after all.

498430

You decide to get a saddle bag for yourself and a plush for Sweetie after confirming that Scootaloo does indeed qualify for a super prize.

"Hey Sweetie Belle."

"Yeah?"

"Which plush do you want?"

"Wh-what?"

"I'm getting you a plush since Scootaloo earned a big prize too. Which one do you want?"

Sweetie Belle blushes furiously, then points at the Daring Doo plush.

You nod, having the stand mare take it down and hand it to Sweetie. Or at least attempt to. It IS life size after all, so it's rather large for the little filly. Rarity helps out with her magic after the plush plops onto Sweetie with a soft thud.

You take the Daring Doo saddle bag for yourself, since it's bigger than your standard bag and a lot nicer.

Scootaloo, not surprisingly, takes the filly sized Wonderbolt costume. It's nice and sealed in it's plastic wrapping still, but Scoots has a gleam in her eye like she wants to wear it right now.

You tell her to try it on, and she looks at you almost bashfully for a second.

"Is that your bet claim?"

You scoff a no and she sticks her tongue out at you, "Yeah, didn't think it was that easy."

She undoes the plastic wrapping and unfolds the uniform. "Wow, that isn't just a random costume. It feels like the real deal. I think."

"Scootaloo, would you like some help?" Rarity offers.

"Uh…s-sure, thanks."

Rarity sets Sweetie's life sized Daring Doo plush down, leaving it upright and standing over Sweetie, then heads over to help Scootaloo put the costume on by suspending it in the air with her magic so Scootaloo can step into it.

Once she's put all her hooves through Rarity helps zip the back up and make sure everything is nicely fit, or at least as best it can be.

When they're done, Scootaloo looks just like a Wonderbolt. Her pixie cut pokes out the top and her little wings buzz with excitement as she looks down at her covered hooves and back at her body. She can't seem to find words, just a big smile and eyes sparkling telling you that she's extremely happy.

Previously, on Cute "Quest:"

A busy morning of dialogue with ponies waiting in line led to some unfortunate results. Mostly, you realized it's going to be harder than previously thought to even hold conversation with Diamond Tiara.
Luckily, when one meltdown happens another opportunity rises from the ashes, and Rarity saved your proverbial bacon by stepping in and making Diamond Tiara apologize.
You agreed to spend the day with Rarity and Sweetie, since Rarity is there more as a caretaker than one intending to go on the rides.
That proved false after Scootaloo joined your group and the three of you egged Rarity on enough to get her on the centrifuge ride and mess up her mane.
Having time for some more fun stuff before lunch, the group checked out some of the fair game stands. It was at the pin game that Scootaloo challenged you: Whoever knocked the larger number of pins down would win. The loser owed 1 favor unspecified to the winner.

Despite a strong showing by Scootaloo, you demolished the pin game, getting a perfect score and snagging extra prizes as a result. Feeling generous, you gave a life sized Daring Doo plush to Sweetie, earning her thanks and some relationship points. You took a Daring Doo saddlebag for yourself, enjoying it's rugged feel and larger holding area.

Scootaloo took an authentic filly sized Wonderbolts costume for herself, and at your behest tried it on.

Suffice to say, she looked pretty good in it.

498635

>>498634
We're gonna have to figure out what that favor is eventually you guys. Thoughts?

Not wishing to dirty her outfit, Scootaloo starts trying to undo the zipper on the back before Rarity picks her up in a field of magic.

"How about we go to the little mare's room to get you out of that. Cobalt," she looks at you with a slight grin, "Watch Sweetie for a moment will you? The two of us will be back in just a moment."

Before you can object she's carrying Scootaloo toward the school building to help get her out of her new costume, leaving you, Sweetie, and the life sized Daring Doo plush by yourselves in the skill game area.

She lets go of the plush with a gasp as an idea hits her, "Wait a second!"

She turns around quickly, suddenly bouncing up and down, "What if we play another fair game before they get back, and win a prize for Rarity or Scootaloo? That'd be fun, right?"

You agree, before the question of how to move this plush without dragging it through the dirt presents itself again.

After struggling with it for a few minutes, you scramble underneat the back hooves, standing under the thing and just standing up. Luckily it's not heavy or anything, being a plush and all.

Sweetie can't help but giggle at the image of a large, stuffed Daring Doo seemingly clinging to your back.

You figure out how to walk normally without tripping over the plush's hooves after a minute, and the three of you make your way to the game stand, Sweetie leading the way since the plush seems to enjoy covering your vision once in a while by wobbling too far forward.

Quick enough you arrive at the small stools that line the counter of the game stand, and Sweetie helps you put the Daring Doo plush on its own stool before the two of you clamber onto seats on either side of it.

The young looking stallion running the stand raises an eyebrow, then laughs as he asks, "So, is that two participants or three?"

>>498665
You look at the prize wall, noting the smaller prizes are similar to the last stand.

The large prizes for this one aren't as….great, as the others. Probably due to less skill being involved.

There's a large pink bow, a water gun with backpack water reservoir, a nice looking sun hat made of straw, and a big inflatable hammer.

"Hmm," she ponders for a bit before pointing at the sun hat, "Rarity likes hats. She has so many already but I don't think she'd mind another one. She'd probably call the bow too tacky or something."

She sighs, "I'm not sure she'd like that one but it's the best I can think of."

>>498673
She does not.

#Rules of the Water Race

It's pretty easy. You aim a water gun at the target across from you. Hitting the bullseye raises your meter. The meter reaching the top first means you win.
If you miss the target, you lose a little bit of meter steadily until you hit the target again.
For the sake of difficulty, holding the aim steady gets harder the longer you do it, meaning you'll get modifiers that try to keep you from hitting the target after a couple rounds of meter building.

If you never miss, it takes 5 rounds to fill the meter.

The one who wins gets a prize, but a big prize is only available if you win two out of three matches

There's a look in her eyes that makes you swallow nervously before saying, "Yes…"

"Alright!" she says, spinning completely in her chair before winking, sticking her tongue out at you at the same time, "Just more incentive to win, then!"

Did she just…?

The stallion running the stand says that the loser will get a small consolation prize.

With that, he asks for five bits from each of you to set up the best of three match.

You fish out five bits just before Sweetie gasps,

"Rarity has all my bits!"

Being the good sport you are, you front her bits for her.

She gives you a sheepish smile, "Thanks Cobalt…but don't think that means I'm going to let you win!"

You smile back at her, "Yeah, yeah."

The stand runner places two small water guns with hoses running from the bottom of them on the counter, one in front of you and one in front of Sweetie. He lets you pick them up and look them over while telling you how they work before stepping over to one side.

"Alright kids, you ready?"

"Ready!" Sweetie says, taking aim at her target, looking intent with her tongue sticking out in concentration.

You raise your own water pistol, sighting the orange bulls eye of the target in front of you.

"Ready!"

You hear the turn of a squeaky valve and feel your water pistol give a slight kick as water starts circulating through it.

You and Sweetie pull the large hoof trigger at the same time, starting the first round of the race!

#Mechanics
I'll be rolling for Sweetie.

Both you and Sweetie follow the same requirements to hit the bullseye.

5 rolls of 1d10 will be taken, with a +2 modifier on each roll (so a total of +10) for you. Sweetie has her own modifiers.

The target at the start is a mere 25. Each successful round raises the bar by 5. Each successful round beyond the second reduces your modifier by 1 per round. This means that at round three, if two successful rounds have happened, you need a 35 with a modifier of +1 per roll.

If you miss, you'll lose half that round's meter, but regain your full roll bonus as you release the trigger and regain your bearing. You can end the game with more than the required amount of meter.

Any questions before we begin?

You try not to laugh, but it's a futile attempt, a stifled chuckle escaping you and throwing you off your game as Sweetie throws the water gun on the counter, hops off her stool, and holds onto Rarity as a stream of never ending "Sorry!" comes from her.

A nearby pony is less than subtle with their laughter, and you turn to see Scoots rolling on the ground, clutching her stomach as she laughs incredibly hard.

Rarity, to her credit, merely scowls, not looking at Sweetie.

The stand runner seems unsure what to do.

Suddenly, Rarity asks,

"How much for the hat?"

The stallion fumbles with words, before apologizing,

"I'm sorry, Miss, but it isn't for sale. It's a prize for the kids to earn…"

Rarity suddenly picks up the water gun with one hoof, a magic aura permeating the water gun as she fires it once at the target across from her.

The force of the blast breaks the bulls eye flipper clean out of the rest of the target.

"On second thought," the stallion mumbles, "I wouldn't want to make a lady walk around with a wet mane."

He grabs the sun hat and hands it to Rarity, who shakes out her mane before putting the hat on. She takes a deep breath, lets it out, then smiles down at the still apologizing Sweetie.

"That's alright, that's alright, I'll be fine. It's just water, after all. Though it'll take considerably more time to fix it…."

"Hey, kid."

You turn to see the stallion rubbing the back of his neck nervously, "Look, ah, don't tell anyone bout that. Okay? Here, you can take one of the big prizes for yourself, since you were winning and all."

"You're sure about that?"

You nod, not mentioning you're getting it for someone else.

"Well, alright then. Here you go little guy," he says, handing the pink bow to you. You put it in your saddlebag and turn in your seat to see Rarity looking at you inquisitively, though she doesn't say anything.

Sweetie looks like she's about to cry, still apologizing to Rarity even as Rarity strokes her mane and tells her it's perfectly alright.

"Let's just go get some lunch, okay, Sweetie?"

Sweetie finally calms down long enough to nod, sniffling a bit but eventually smiling at her big sis.

"Much better," Rarity says with a small smile.

The four of you, with Daring Doo plush in tow, head into the school house to utilize one of the lockers for the plush, Rarity locking it before you all head into what is normally your class room.

Inside is a wonderful assortment of sandwiches and treats laid out on a few tables near the chalkboard, with Miss Cheerilee sitting behind a third table that has desserts. It seems the standard lunch items are free, but the desserts are priced.

"Why hello there Cobalt, Sweetie, Scootaloo, and Rarity! How are you all enjoying the fair today?"

Rarity walks over to begin conversing with Miss Cheerilee, letting the three of you get your sandwiches and sides to eat.

You look around the room and see an open space near the wall opposite Miss Cheerilee and Rarity, and you lead the others to sit.

There are a few other fair goers in here as well, but you don't recognize any of the handful of ponies here. Strange. Perhaps the fair is open to more than just the school goers.

The three of you sit and begin to eat, though Sweetie stares at her food a bit first. She starts to eat when Scootaloo prods her with a hoof and asks if she's alright.

After she gets some food in her she seems to perk back up, though when her sandwich is gone she turns and asks you a rather point blank question:

Sweetie shrugs, "That's fine with me, I guess. Though I would've been fine owing you…"

>>498840
You turn back to Scootaloo, "So, you gonna sing too then?"

Scoots nearly spits out her juice once again, wings flaring in surprise before she bashfully puts the juice box down and looks over at the dessert table, "Eh, heh, I-I don't think so. Hey, is that chocolate cake?"

Before you can stop her she's up and dashing to the dessert table, leaving you and Sweetie alone.

"Sweetie, it's only been a week."

"Hey, I'm just saying!"

>>498844
"Would you want to sing a duet? That way we can both be on stage at once? Rarity could judge both of us that way…"

Sweetie's eyes light up, "Really? A duet? You and me? Oh wow, I'd love to!"

"Whats dat?"

Scootaloo returns, butting in on the conversation while chewing on a hefty slice of chocolate cake, her tiny cheeks bulging as she talks with her mouth full.

"Af uet?"

Sweetie nods energetically, "Yeah, a duet!"

Scootaloo just shakes her head and keeps eating, "Balt ounna et ream."

Scootaloo says, getting riled up again while Sweetie just laughs.

Soon enough Rarity comes over to the group with a plate covered in small squares of chocolate cake and fudge.

"Cobalt, your teacher seems rather fond of you," she says as she sits down, setting the plate of goods between you and Sweetie, "She let me take the plate of sweets for next to nothing and just couldn't stop talking about what a nice colt you are."

Your ears start to feel warm as she relays the praise given by your teacher.

"I'd be more than happy to have you visit the boutique and play with Sweetie once in a while if you're half the colt she says you are."

The two of you hand the record to the staff member, who gives it a once over.

"Huh. Don't recognize this one, but alright. You two got the lyrics, right?"

You both nod, and he hands you a pair of microphones.

"Alright, head up to the stage. I'll cycle the mics when you get up there, just signal me when you want me to set the record going."

The two of you nod and head up to the stage, glad the curtain is still drawn on the makeshift thing.

You hear the mics click on and you both tap them instinctively, hearing the taps gently echo over the speakers.

Looks like everything is set up correctly at least.

You feel a little better than average, but your nervousness is hitting you pretty hard. You'll be able to pick it up later. Probably.

You signal the staff member. Now or never.

The curtains draw to the side, revealing a meager crowd, Scootaloo and Rarity sitting right up front.

You look down at your lyric sheet and take a deep breath as the guitar in the song kicks in with a light tune used in most folk tales.
[Blue is cobalt, purple is Sweetie, multicolored is both]

There's an old tale wrought with mystery, of Brynn the scholar and his muse
And a magic book which gave a life to the words the scholar used

Now the muse she was his happiness, and he wrote about her grace
And told her of the splendors from crossing to this place

Until in the darkness of one night, the moon still high above
He tore a page from his book and brought to this plane his love

Sweetie sings fantastically, her voice booming across the entire fair if you had to guess. But she's not just volume, she carries the tune like it was natural to her.
You're having a hard time comparing, but seeing and hearing her sing so beautifully makes you strive to sing just as well, and you feel your nervousness fade to the back of your mind as the two of you sing the song out.

You can't help but notice as you continue, that more ponies start to show up in the audience. Before long all the seats are filled with random ponies both from school and those from town.

You think you see a few familiar faces in the back, but you can't be certain.

The two of you finish the song with its chorus, and the crowd erupts into applause and cheering.

Feeling like you got carried quite significantly, you motion for Sweetie to bow.

Instead, she grabs your left hoof in her right, and forces you to bow beside her, a blinding smile on her face that glints in the setting suns' light.

The setting sun….

Not willing to talk about it right now, the two of you take a final bow before heading off to the side of the stage, where the staff member is still applauding.

"Man, you kids are great! Energetic, able to carry a tune, and you guys sang like, twenty songs or something. That's ridiculous for kids your age!"

T-Twenty songs? You only sang one! It was kinda long but…

"Sweetie! You sang so beautifully! And Cobalt, you did just fine as well! But don't take that the wrong way, you did splendidly yourself!"

Drat.

Your party arrives at Sugarcube Corner, where Pinkie parties it up for your little group as Rarity buys each of you a large shake before talking with Pinkie and giving her the run down of how the day went.

Scoots, Sweetie, and you all sit and enjoy your shakes together, laughing about Rarity getting water blasted, praising Sweetie for her singing, and comforting Scoots on her loss to you at pins.

But still you can't get the weird feeling out of the back of your head. Something happened today that you don't remember, and it's bothering you quite a bit.

The party passes quickly, Rarity ending her conversation with Pinkie and telling Sweetie they should head back home or they'll miss seeing their parents.

Scootaloo downs her shake not long after, giving you a firm hoofshake and swearing to live up to her end of the bet, before heading out for the night.
"I'd uh, hang out more, but I'm pretty wiped today," she apologizes to you as she reaches the door, "But we'll hang out together more in the future. Definitely."

With that, she leaves.

Pinkie pops up seemingly out of nowhere and plops into the seat next to you.

"Hey there Cobalt, buddy! How're ya feeling?"

>Good!

>Somethings bugging me

"Good, but uh….Hey, Pinkie, something happened today that's bugging me."

Pinkie's expression suddenly grows more serious, and she leans toward you, motioning for you to continue.

"Well, uh, today-today was really fun and all but, when I was singing with Sweetie….something was different."

"Go on…."

"Well…I don't know, it's like….time skipped or something. One moment we were just starting to sing, the next we were done and I couldn't remember what all happened. I still can't. It's….weird."

Pinkie reaches out with a hoof putting it on your shoulder in a gesture of comfort.

"Well, Cobalt, that sounds like…"

You lean forward as she motions you closer. You turn your head as she leans in further to whisper:

"Love."

You sigh in exasperation as Pinkie jumps out of her chair and begins to dance around the table, singing something about love and how it's the best sugar in any sweet or something.

Maybe it's best not to really try and tell her.

"Besides!" she says suddenly, jumping onto the table in front of you and nearly tipping the whole thing over, "Time flies when you're having fun, and Dash flies to have fun!"

"I….what?"

"It means time goes quickly when you're enjoying yourself. Sometimes too quick. And some ponies go too quick to have fun."

>I….thanks, Pinkie

"Thanks, Pinkie," you say as genuinely as you can manage, "Hey, have you seen Silver Spoon or Apple Bloom around, by the way?"

Pinkie stops her cavorting, looking shocked, hoof on her chest and everything.

"Why, Cobalt! You think I keep tabs on every pony in-" she dashes beside you, squishing your head against her chest as she points out a window, "I saw Apple Bloom and AJ heading back to their farm a little bit ago, and Silver was heading somewhere else. I think she stopped at the library, but I dunno if she's still there or not."

>>498990
>>498991
You hop out of your chair when she lets you go, swinging your saddlebag over your back and clasping it before heading for the door.

"Thanks, Pinkie!" you call out as you head to the door, only to stop as a new question makes you stop. You turn and ask:

"Hey, Pinkie? Have you…have you ever been in love?"

Pinkie smiles, sitting in the chair you were just in, and rests her hooves on the table gently. She lays her head down on her hooves with a sigh.

"All the time."

Confusion clearly written on your face, you thank her again before heading outside, figuring out what you want to do before you head home.

TO THE LIBRARY

499009

>>499005
I guess we can give the bow to spike. Noone said it had to be a heterosexual harem.

499010

We can pick up one of the books Twilight suggested to us last time: I don't think we actually got anything out last time, and there hasn't been mention of anything we're currently reading, so we need a new book.

499011

>>499010
We could just ask her to magically search for the book the page is from. There's a spell for that.

ID: aaaaa 499012

>>499005
You decide to head to the library, both to see if Twilight's there to help with whatever happened today, and to see if Silver Spoon is there.

You reach the library, its lights on to ward off the approaching night.

You hurry to the door and give it a good knock, still not wishing to just charge in.

Nobody answers.

You give it a second round of good knocks before hearing a voice.

"One minute!"

You wait, impatient to find some answers, if there are even answers to be had.

Finally, the door opens, Twilight herself answering the door as she rubs a hoof against a rather tired looking eye.

"Oh, hello there….Cobalt, right? Come on in."

She turns, leaving the door open for you, and you enter quietly, shutting the door so as to make as little noise as possible.

"So what brings you here so late in the day?" Twilight asks calmly, pouring herself a cup of what you assume is hot tea.

She beckons you to sit across from her again, like you did the first time you visited, and she hands you the cup she poured before getting herself one. It smells of chamomile with slight mint, caressing your nose as you let it cool a bit.

>Explain everything that happened

>Only tell her about the time part, leave out the paper not being correct
>Ask about Silver Spoon
>Idle chat

499013

>>499012
Tell her about the weird happenings, ask if she knows the book where that lyric page is from. Afterwards ask about silver.

499014

>>499011
You mean the song lyrics? It's been said that they didn't look like they'd been torn from anything.
…Maybe we could get her to look at it to see if there's anything non-mundane about it.

499015

>>499012

You go over what happened, to the best of your memory, quickly but thoroughly. Twilight looks tired throughout the whole thing, but perks up a bit when you mention the lyric sheet not matching to what was sung and so on.

"Do you have the sheets with you?"

You nod, pulling out even the record and letting her take them with her magic.

She looks intently at the paper before closing her eyes. Her horn flares with a bright light, and a sound like a great flame being snuffed suddenly echoes in the room.

She opens her eyes again, though this time she's scowling.

"Well….there's nothing inherently magical about it. Or at least, not what we know as magic."

"Wh-what do you mean?"

She sighs, setting the papers and record down on a stand beside her seat.

"What I mean is, if it's magic, it's a form we don't use anymore, or haven't yet learned to use. It's hard to tell whether it's backwards or forwards at a glance like this." She sighs, then takes a sip of her tea, sighing gently at its flavor before resuming, "I'd like to hold onto these for now, if you don't mind. I need to cross reference the signature they give off with some other sources and…well, I just need to do some detective work, to say the least. Is that alright with you?"

>>499026
You ask for a transcription, and her horn flares with energy once more before suddenly fizzling.

"Well that's….odd."

"What's odd?"

She sighs, sipping at her tea again before explaining, "Whatever is up with the magic in this page, it won't let me just zap a copy of it. It'll have to be done by hoof. Or hand, rather."

Her horn glows again, though it's not acting on any object you can see.

You hear a faint yelp and suddenly get the idea, just before a startled looking Spike is wheeled around the corner in a purple aura.

"Spike, I need you to make a hand copy of this immediately for our friend here-"

#Twilight and Spike status: Friends

"He's done a very good thing in bringing something to my attention but he wants to be kept in the loop."

"Alright, alright," Spike says, "Just put me down already."

He lands on his feet with a gentle thud, pulling an ink pen and scroll from seemingly nowhere before intently scribbling down a transcription.

You encourage Twilight that you don't think it's anything too serious, and she smiles.

"Well, that's yet to be determined. But I thank you for bringing it to my attention."

Suddenly she yawns, and you find yourself echoing the action.

"Ah, chamomile kicking in," Twilight mumbles, pawing at an eye again, "Been up for too long, need to go to sleep."

She smiles in your direction before getting up out of her seat, yawning again and stretching her legs out a bit. You try your best not to stare at her backside from this angle….

"I'm sorry to be so rude, but I fear I can't stay up any longer. Please, show yourself out when Spike is finished. Unless you'd rather sleep in the library tonight…"

Your face flushes and she giggles.

"Just kidding. Get home safely, okay?"

You nod as she heads up the stairs in her library to her personal section.

Not long after, Spike hands you a transcription of the lyric sheet.

"Sorry that took so long. Blinked once or twice and thought it said something different."

A chill runs down your spine as you take the sheet from him.

Just what exactly are you getting into?

Trying to put it out of mind, you thank Spike for his efforts.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. No worries. Just try to show up during the day next time. I'm beat."

You apologize, but he just waves you off with a small smile as he escorts you to the door.

"Take care there, Cobalt," he says when you head outside.

You tell him you will, and head home, not quite sure how to feel about the turn of events.

At least you spent the day with some cute mares.
