You pick up the book and rotate it in front of your face, examining the extremely worn cover and pages. You rifle through a few pages and immediately recoil as dozens of instances of Chronicle's voice appear in your head, all seeming to be reading things from his perspective. You shake your head and flip quickly until it all comes to a halt.
You stare at the page, the scent of burning paper filling your nose. The paper itself is not on fire, but the symbols in the page are smoldering and spreading across it, even as you look. The longer you stare, the more the pounding rhythm of the temple fills your head. Before long the page blackens , the image of an octagon searing itself into the paper.
Tear out the page before it spreads.

The page falls to the ground with a thump, laden with whatever was spreading across its surface. You have never heard paper scream before, and you hope that you never get the chance to do so again in your entire life. The blackness writhes, trying to get off of the paper.
So last session I was saying I wasn't really angry with Chronicle since nothing he's done down here has really harmed us in any way, and he's actually been pretty helpful.Somehow it didn't click until yesterday that he was the one who deliberately summoned the spikes to destroy our ship (since he knew all about the expedition in able to pretend to be part of its passengers) and set all this in motion.So yeah, fuck Chronicle with a chainsaw.

You look over to Saffron, and her back legs are kicking once every few moments. She isn't whimpering, nor does she look stressed. She is snoring a bit, though. You watch her for a few more moments before you turn your attention on the page again, deciding to let her get her rest. The paper is... normal paper. Only a few drops of the black ichor remain on the page, and they are quickly dripping onto the puddle, leaving the page clean.

Hrrmm, so we did that with the power-imbued blade. Interesting.
The cut-out page contains nothing more than a few physical imperfections, a tear and several creases, but it is otherwise a normal sheet of paper. The book lies on the ground undisturbed from where you dropped it, no sign of a smoldering corruption anywhere.

You take a glance at the puddle on the floor, then at Saffron, and decide to take a bit of time flipping through Chronicle's journal. You start at the first page."Twelve long years, I've spent, gathering up all of the information and colleagues I could find. Many did not want to contact me after finding out the true nature of my studies, but that is just as well. I would not want to conscript anyone unsuited for the task. No matter, I only require seven. Just one more book, and one more member.""The rituals described seem to be... rather varied. I am unsure of the exact procedure we must complete, but from the information I have gathered, I can venture an educated guess. The constant throughout all, however, is the presence of the number eight, and so I have gathered all that are required. We have in our group four Breakers, a Seer, the Sacrifice, myself the Guide, and the Conduit. Not much time remains before we must make our move. You keep going, wanting to turn the pages as you can read faster than Chronicle's voice is speaking in your head, but you are forced to sit and listen to him read to you. He explains how they raided and killed the owner of a local boat rental business, deeming him as the "first of many." You listen to him telling of how they took the boat out to where the temple was and sunk it on purpose, with he and Star providing the scuba spell for the group. You realize it's better that you are hearing his voice, now, as you are unable to read through the tears welling in your eyes."So. It would seem as if they were ALL wrong. So be it, I suppose it was my fault to trust texts passed down from legend, rather than those from the origins of the legend itself. No matter. Chance keeps speaking of four of metal, stone, body, and soul. Lucky for us, I suppose, that we have bodies and souls to spare."You listen to the fall of Chance's sanity, and the crumbling of his group. You snap the book shut halfway through his telling of your tale, his voice halting immediately. His talk of you being some kind of excess baggage is not what made you break, however. He intended to put Saffron through hell, making her wear all of the armor and assume Chance's role as the Conduit of the temple. You slam the book on the ground, tears streaming from your eyes.

You stand guard at the door, vigilant, attuning yourself to every sound that you hear. Hours pass, and you do not waver. Nothing crosses your path, but the sound of the voices above you start to grow, from a whisper to an audible speaking level.

You inch into the next room, wary of the growing cacophony of voices. You block them out as best as you can. You use your spade to get a scoop of the ichor, chopping off a "tentacle" of it. Both you and Saffron wince, but nothing more comes of it. You separate it into two chunks as best as you can, which proves to be difficult as it slowly squirms about.

You tell Saffron about your experiment, and she pulls the dagger out and stabs one of the blobs. You both wince again at the slight pinch, but nothing happens aside from that.

You do the same, and look gravely towards the doorway leading up to the skull door. Saffron puts a paw on your withers, comfortingly, and you begin the trek up the stairs. The voices grow in number and strength as you approach the door. By concentrating, you are able to keep the din at a tolerable level. You hesitate at the doorway, but feel Saffron patting your side."Remember, Renne. Scarves."You smile. You remember.

It does not seem invasive now, as much as it sounds like a rhythmic chanting, almost hypnotic. Saffron pokes her head up behind yours. You can her a deep growl as she looks around the room.

If combat ensues, remember that Renne can lift Saffron with relative ease. I don't know if it's been tested but I imagine a willing target could be propelled with speed some distance as well, with concentration. A flying, pissed-off mass of Diamond Dog strong enough to tear through rock can't bode well for any enemy. You hear a great thudding noise as the pauldrons fall from Saffron's armor and into the stone floor.

As the last of the ichor drains from your body, you feel incredibly weary, the barrier you have focused on Saffron beginning to waver.
