You relight the torches, and move in a bit closer to observe. You make sure not to stand underneath the skull, lest it feel like closing while you're under it. You can see that the top jaw of the skull was hiding a bronze octagon, set in the door, with another bronze disc inside of the octagon. You see the four finger holes, but there's a large divot in the center, this time.
Saffron reaches forward carefully with a jasper stone for size comparison."Far too small..."

I think the most logical place for us to look into is that large chamber filled with lava and something in the center. It should be safe for us to get down there, but is there something else we should do first? I can't think off the top of my head of anything in particular that would help us reach that island.

You make your way down, heading for the balcony overlooking the large lava room. Just outside the room where you found Gusty, you get a slight headache. Other than that, however, things are uneventful until you reach the room where you found the green eye. You take your time, heading slowly for the staircase, as the golem is still patrolling around the spire. Same motions, same amount of steps, same amount of time, never looking your way.
The trek downward goes unimpeded. As you pass by the dilapidated golem, you wait to see if you can hear the other golem from the stairwell below. After some time waiting, you hear nothing, and proceed to the west. You find yourselves standing on the balcony overlooking the lava room once more.
Just to clarify, what exactly is the piece of armor that we have? Just a bronze plate that would go straight onto the chest?

After much thought, you decide to put yourself in harm's way before subjecting Saffron to any more of the armor. You tell her that you're going to try on the armor piece, because the right gauntlet seemed to react to you earlier. You tell her that you're sorry you put her up to everything she's been through so far, and stolidly ask for the bronze plate. She reluctantly pulls it out of her bag and holds it up to you.

With some assistance from Saffron, you rear yourself up and levitate the plate towards you. As it gets near, you can feel the heat emanating off of the metal. When you press the center of the plate against your chest, the burning sensation hits you, and there are a few clinks; microscopic hinges loosing, the panels wrapping around the side of your body. You want to scream, and your mouth opens, but nothing comes out. The sensation is intense against your chest, but completely unbearable along your sides, and your spine starts to tingle. You hold the armor there for as long as you can, but have to let go. It pulls away from you, and instantly the pain is gone, Saffron hovering over you worriedly."R-Renne! Are you okay? What happened?"You tell her that it felt like it was burning, and that pins were pricking your sides, but the armor did not seem to attach.

You shake yourself off and get your bearings once more. Your knees are a little shaky, but you seem to come back up to speed quickly. All the while, you keep forgetting that the armor is even attached to your back. Once again tiphoofing past the golem, you make your way down to the lava room overhang. You take a long look out and... nothing really seems different about it.
