>While off to start your next training session with Gold Heart, Baron stops you and says you're coming with him to patrol some nearby caves

>After checking if it was okay with Gold Heart, she drops you and Baron off at the caves
>You had intended to bring Lucent along, but Baron was in a hurry and you forgot
>At the caves, Baron tells you his real intention of bringing you here before actually taking you on patrol
>You find some Diamond Dogs who aren't too happy to have you invading their place and you get into a fight
>You come out alive, if a little beaten, but at the cost of killing one of the Diamond Dogs
>You and Baron are currently taking a rest in the main entrance after the fight
>There's still a few more areas you have to check for Diamond Dogs, just to be sure that one of them wasn't lying to you about how many were actually there

Current Affection Levels

Luna - New Friends
Lucent - New Friends
Gold Heart - Upper-Low
Celestia - Mid-Low

Baron nudges your shoulder with his hoof and tells you to get up.

"There's something I want to clear up before we leave here," Baron says. "If I'm going to keep your kill a secret, I need you to do the same for me by not telling Lucent you came with me. She thinks I went alone and wouldn't appreciate me having that little talk with you earlier. Think you can do that?"

Just a note for later - I think we should at least tell Luna about us killing the DD, she will find it out some way anyway

I guess that does kind of make us the aggressors, drawing first blood and all. We were supposed to clear out the diamond dogs, though, right?

"I won't go and tell her, but if she comes to me and asks I also don't want to lie, or if I can't avoid the question."

Baron's jaw tightens behind his frown.

"Then you'll just have to try and avoid the question if she brings it up or avoid her if you have to," he seethes and looks around the rest of the cave. "We've already cleared out one area. Let's just go through one of these tunnels and then head back here when we're done."

>>593662

"Why'd you tell her you were going alone?"

"Because she doesn't need to know I brought you with me," he snaps. "Use your brain human…if you have one. She finds out I was talking to you about her and she'll be more than a little upset with me, got it?"

His nostrils flare as he ends the question. Actually answering it or asking more questions doesn't seem like a good idea right now. Baron's already getting a bit agitated and it wouldn't be wise to provoke him into hitting you again. Your face is still swollen from when you got clocked by one of the other Diamond Dogs.

"Just pick where we go already," he sighs. "You seem to have good intuition for getting us where we need to go, but no mine carts this time."

Since we've come to an area with another exit, might be worth just sticking our heads outside, just to see if there's anything of note out there.
Unless we already went back to the hub area

>>593665
That works.

 No.593667

Hmm. Mine cart's currently set up for tunnel 1, but with that being a sleeping area, their main operations must be down one of the other tunnels. 3 and 4 are the only through path without a rotation, so it would make sense for them to have the most common daily activity; you don't want to have to constantly stop to turn if you can help it. Tunnel 2 might be a supply drop area, or some kind of command center/trade post deal. Or another sleeping area. Something that justifies another turn, anyway. I could be totally wrong on all this, though.

Tunnel 3 works for me anyway.

"Lets take this one to the left, that way we will have the whole left area cleared."

Baron nods and you both start to make your way down the tunnel. There aren't any torches or lava or anything to keep the tunnel lit. It's so dark you can barely see your hand in front of your face. Baron notices this and lights his horn with magic just before you come to a dead end wall.

"Unfinished tunnel, maybe?" Baron grumbles.

The moment Baron finishes his question, there's a creaking sound from beneath your feet. The ground starts to shift and you realize that you're about to fall victim to a trap. You look over to Baron, but he seems oblivious about what's going on. Time is not on your side. If you call out to him, you'd both be down the trap before you got the words out. Only thing you can do is grab him with you as you get out of the trap.

Throwing your arm around the front of Baron's neck, you turn and jump away from the trap. There's a loud choking noise as Baron is flipped upside down and backwards onto the ground. "Rub some dirt on it, you'll be fine," you tell him as he stands up. "You are welcome, by the way."

Baron growls as he walks over and the two of you take a look down the hole. The drop doesn't look to be too far down, but enough that it would hurt should you land the wrong way. A rough guess would be about ten or fifteen feet. You can see the dim red and orange glow of lava light illuminating a patch of solid white marble. It's the only thing you can see without going down and inspecting the rest of the room.

"If this is a trap, I'm not aching to learn what's down there," Baron says and starts to walk back towards the main entrance. "You coming?"

As expected, the floor opens up into another pit. This one is dark all the way down and you can't see a thing. Unlike the last trap, the Diamond Dog tarp didn't fall when the pit opened up. There's a short click and you turn back in time to the width of a log fall towards you. Baron catches the sound as well this time and the both of you hit the ground as the log passes over you.

"If we survive this little adventure, I'm kicking your behind all the way back to Equestria," Baron seethes as he makes his way back to the main entrance. "You coming, or are you wondering what's down this hole too?"

Back in the main entrance, you and Baron head towards the final tunnel. The room you walk into has a single line of track running through it along the wall. The rest of the room looks something like a mess hall. There's a few tables here, some cauldrons, and cabinets to store things hanging from the cave wall. They're hanging a bit lopsided and there's dried food crusted to the inside of most of the cauldrons. Bowls with matching crust litter the tables. The tracks lead into another tunnel.

"Let's keep going."

Baron leads you down the tracks and into the next room. There are unharvested gems covering every inch of the wall. Aside from that and some leftover mining equipment, that seems to be all that's here.

"A lot of these would sell for a pretty bit back home," Baron tells you. "A lot of ponies don't bother coming here to mine these themselves because of the Diamond Dogs. Since they aren't coming back, I don't see the harm in pocketing a few. You?"

As the laughter fades, Baron walks over to a wall and starts scooping up a jewel here and there. When he doesn't see you going for anything, he seems a bit disappointed.

"Ya know," he pauses his gathering for a minute to frown at you again, "you might be a good guy, but you're pretty dense sometimes. You're just gonna stand there and watch all this good stuff go to waste? Why not grab something for one of those mares you're so sweet on?"

You're always going on about how I'm flirting, flirting, flirting. I was serious about "just making conversation" with Goldheart earlier, and I'm serious now. None of the stuff I've done with Goldheart and Lucent would classify as any serious sort of "flirting" back home: getting to know them better, learning about their past, it's all just basic friendship stuff. While your waiting for the pain to subside, Baron stands over you, hoof raised and ready to come down across your face.

Baron halts his attack and prods your forehead with his hoof.

"I'm not asking you to be a hermit," Baron's voice falls back into a grumble. "I'm just saying to watch what you're doing. Ya never know who's gonna be watching, what they'll think, or what they'll say. You might not care, but that doesn't mean somepony else won't."

Thorn's eyes flicker open for a minute and he stares down at Gold Heart. There's a small frown set on his face, but he nods.

"Crystal," he says with a smirk.

Gold Heart smiles back and Thorn sets down his wing for you all to board his back.

You and Baron climb onto Thorn and he takes off towards the camp. Gold Heart still seems a bit shaken by the news she relayed to you, and she idly strokes away at the smaller spines on the back of Thorn's head as she stares off into the horizon.

Baron's focus and surly demeanor have returned through his usual sour grimace, but he keeps looking at you every so often.

Thorn seems uneasy. Every so often during the flight, you see his claws clench and his eyes wince. It lasts only for a moment each time, but it doesn't seem to be bothering is ability to fly. The flight seems to be the only thing going smoothly right now.

Maybe we should ask Thorn what was happening earlier. Is Tiamat a telepath?
